Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informed by the latest research in the fields of second language acquisition and applied linguistics, El español y la lingüística aplicada responds to the central questions that lie at the heart of learning Spanish as a second or foreign language. What does it mean to know a language? Can technology help second language learners? How does studying abroad promote language acquisition? Framing chapters in terms of these and other critical areas of inquiry, Robert J. Blake and Eve C. Zyzik examine the linguistic challenges and pitfalls involved in Spanish-language learning and delve into practical implications for students and teachers. Written entirely in Spanish, some chapters focus on specific areas of Spanish grammar that tend to pose difficulty for learners, while others explore broad pedagogical themes related to the concept of proficiency, the nature of input, and the impact of learning context. Each chapter ends with a series of guided questions for reflection and further research. Designed to address the pre-service training needs of Spanish language professionals, El español y la lingüística aplicada will also be of interest to anyone wishing to develop linguistic expertise in this important world language.

Book excerpt: The Spanish language has a long and rich history, from its prehistoric roots to its position today as the mother tongue of nearly 400 million inhabitants of 21 countries. How the language originated, how it evolved, and how it is spoken today around the world makes for a fascinating story that greatly enhances the study of written and spoken Spanish. This Spanish-language text covers the history of Spanish from its pre-Roman and Latin roots to its standardized form and its many regional variations. Along the way, discussion covers the spread of Latin on the Iberian Peninsula, the development of romance dialects due to a number of sociolinguistic influences, and the process of creating a standard variety of Spanish. It concludes with a discussion of the origin and the range of dialects that are spoken across the vast geographical area that forms the Spanish-speaking world. Details of pronunciation, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary are explained in their historical context, giving the student of Spanish a deeper understanding of the language as a whole. Perfect for students of Spanish as well as Spanish-speaking readers seeking to expand their general knowledge of the language, this book also includes a glossary of basic linguistic terms discussed in the text. A lo largo de la narrativa se cubre la expansion del latin en la Peninsula Iberica, el desarrollo de los dialectos romances debido a una serie de influencias de tipo sociolinguistico, y el proceso de crear una variante estandar del espanol. Book excerpt: Mankind is the only speaking species on earth. Hence language is supposed to have a genetic basis, no matter whether it relies on general intelligence, or on a linguistic module. This study proposes that universal formal properties of the linguistic code emerged from the genetic code through duplication. The proportion of segmental duplication is clearly higher in the human genome than in any other species, and duplication took place 6 million years ago when humans separated from the other hominid branches. The evolution of language is therefore supposed to be a gradual process with a break. This book describes a lot of striking formal resemblances the genetic code and the linguistic code hold in common. The book aims to reconcile generative grammar with cognitive semiotics showing that both of them constitute instances of embodiment.

Book excerpt: The book is comprehensive, structural review of the Spanish language for bilingual college students. It can be used as either an elementray or an intermediate textbook depending on students' level of linguistic competency. While these bilingual students are usually effective in oral communication in Spanish within their communities, they often have little knowledge of the written forms ... We have chosen to use a structuralist approach to grammar, as our experience in teaching Hispanics has shown that the use of grammatical terminology need not be considered an obstacle for the learner ... We think that Hispanics are already familiar with the use of verbs and, therefore, do not need to study them at the very beginning. [The book] is a general book in the sense that it can be used with any group of Spanish speakers regardless of their origin: Chicanos, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, etc ... This is not a self-teaching textbook, since it requires a cooperative, combined effort from both the instructor and the student.-Pref.
