Book Synopsis Reorienting Global Communication by : Michael Curtin
Download or read book Reorienting Global Communication written by Michael Curtin and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizing the global nature of Indian and Chinese film, television, and digital media, Reorienting Global Communication: Indian and Chinese Media Beyond Borders provides a diverse mix of alternative perspectives that collectively shift the discussion of media globalization away from Hollywood and New York. Linked by a shared history of colonialism, state socialism, large diasporas, and recent market liberalization, India and China are poised to become twenty-first-century world powers. While both enjoy a rich ensemble of religious iconography, legends, and folk traditions, Indian and Chinese producers and consumers are today challenged to find modes of expression that are culturally authentic and commercially viable in an increasingly globalized media environment. Essays cover topics such as the influence of transnational Indian families on the narrative elements of Bollywood productions, the rise of made-in-China blockbusters, the development of pan-Asian cinema, and migrants' use of the Internet to maintain connections with their homelands. Contributors are Michael Curtin, Chua Beng Huat, Shanti Kumar, Chin-Chuan Lee, Madhavi Mallapragada, Divya C. McMillin, Sreya Mitra, Sujata Moorti, Zhongdang Pan, Aswin Punathambekar, Jack Linchuan Qiu, Hemant Shah, Lakshmi Srinivas, Emilie Yueh-yu Yeh, and Yuezhi Zhao.
Book Synopsis India and China at Sea by : David Brewster
Download or read book India and China at Sea written by David Brewster and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China and India are emerging as major maritime powers as part of long-term shifts in the regional balance of power. As their wealth, interests, and power grow, the two countries are increasingly bumping up against each other across the Indo-Pacific. China’s growing naval presence in the Indian Ocean is seen by many as challenging India’s aspirations towards regional leadership and major power status. How India and China get along in this shared maritime space—cooperation, coexistence, competition, or confrontation—will be one of the key strategic challenges for the entire region. India and China at Sea is an essential resource in understanding how the two countries will interact as major maritime powers in the coming decades. The essays in the volume, by noted strategic analysts from across the world, seek to better understand Indian and Chinese perspectives about their roles in the Indian Ocean and their evolving naval strategies towards each other.
Book Synopsis The China-India Nuclear Crossroads by : Lora Saalman
Download or read book The China-India Nuclear Crossroads written by Lora Saalman and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2012-08-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global power is shifting to Asia. The U.S. military is embarking on an American "pivot" to the Indo-Pacific region, and the bulk of global arms spending is directed toward Asian theaters. India and Pakistan are thought to be building up their nuclear arsenals while questions persist about China's potential to "sprint to parity." China remains by far the world's largest market for new nuclear energy production, and India aspires to be on a similar trajectory. Despite these trends, The China-India Nuclear Crossroads is the first serious book by leading Chinese and Indian experts to examine the political, military, and technical factors that affect Sino-Indian nuclear relations. In this book, editor and translator Lora Saalman presents a comprehensive framework through which China and India can pursue enhanced cooperation and minimize the unintended consequences of their security dilemmas.

Holland, next to Great Britain, would, from the extent of her trade with the East, have a direct interest in the accomplishment of the proposed enterprise. Her com merce would be improved, and her political connection with her extensive colonies of Java, &c would be much strength ened by it. France would derive most important benefits. It would create almost a new commerce for her, in which, through her ports in the Mediterranean, she would have the advantage over us in importing direct, the raw silks, indigo &c of India, of which, she requires such large quantities for the use of her manufactories, while the shorter route which would be opened to India, &c would give a stimulons to her exports. Book Synopsis India-China Maritime Competition by : Rajesh Basrur
Download or read book India-China Maritime Competition written by Rajesh Basrur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume critically examines the concept of the “security dilemma” and applies it to India–China maritime competition. Though frequently employed in academic discussion and popular commentary on the Sino-Indian relationship, the term has rarely been critically analysed. The volume addresses the gap by examining whether the security dilemma is a useful concept in explaining the naval and foreign policy strategies of India and China. China’s Belt and Road Initiative and its expansive engagement in the Indian Ocean Region have resulted in India significantly scaling up investment in its navy, adding ships, naval aircraft and submarines. This volume investigates how the rivalry is playing out in different sub-regions of the Indian Ocean, and the responses of other powers, notably the United States and prominent Southeast Asian states. Their reactions to the Sino-Indian rivalry are an underexplored topic and the chapters in this book reveal how they selectively use that rivalry while trying to steer clear of making definite choices. The book concludes with recommendations on mitigating the security dilemma. This work will be of great interest to students of strategic studies, international relations, maritime security, and Asian politics.

Book Synopsis India and China in the Emerging Dynamics of East Asia by : G. V. C. Naidu
Download or read book India and China in the Emerging Dynamics of East Asia written by G. V. C. Naidu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though considerable research literature is now available on China–India relations, most of it still follows a conventional narrative, viewing the relationship through the narrow conflictual prism limited to South Asia than in the new, larger perspective, especially in the context of emerging East Asian dynamics. This book offers comprehensive analyses of some of these issues in papers addressing two broad themes. One, significant trends in the relationship between China and India on a range of issues, including economic development models, their military strategies, and the boundary dispute; and two, how others are responding to the rise of India and China and their impact on East Asia. Together, the chapters constitute a comprehensive study on both China–India relations and their concurrent rise, including a variety of perspectives and methodologies. Written by some of the top experts on the subject from India, China, Japan, and Taiwan and covering a broad range of issues, the book will generate considerable interest in understanding this relatively neglected dimension of today’s East Asia.
