This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge generation and transfer mechanisms are being transformed in important and controversial ways. Investment in research and development has increased in response to recognition that scientific productivity is tightly connected to economic dynamism. Patent protection has been expanded in order to stimulate higher levels of private investment. Intellectual property rights held by public organizations and researchers are now increasingly transferred to private organizations to accelerate the diffusion and enhance the value of knowledge produced by public agencies and universities. Additionally, new institutions such as university offices of technology transfer, venture capital markets, and a variety of consortia in knowledge-intensive industries are being established throughout the United States and in other parts of the world. These changes have led to a repositioning of the state in systems of innovation and an increase in the proprietary character of technical information. The purpose of this book is to review and analyze i) contemporary transitions in agricultural knowledge generation and extension arrangements from an empirical perspective, and ii) emerging and contradictory perspectives as to how knowledge systems can be assessed effectively. The authors aim to provide the reader with a better understanding of the implications of new biotechnologies and new intellectual property rights regimes on public-private relations in science, the extent to which benefits from scientific knowledge are being appropriated by private sector actors, the diversity and possible outcomes of privatization initiatives in extension, and prospects for public goods production and ecological sustainability given contemporary trends. The book presents contrasting views on the degree of complementarity and substitution between private and public sector investments in research and extension. Recognizing that the labels `public' and `private' are incomplete and at times misleading descriptions of the structure and function of coordinating bodies in social systems, the analyses highlight ways in which public and private spaces and modes of functioning combine. In addition to illustrating a broad range of analytic methodologies useful for studying organizational questions in knowledge systems, the authors identify the implications of a range of past and potential institutional innovations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the best practices and their respective outcomes in artificial intelligence (AI) to meet sustainable development goals and demands. It examines the practices, technologies, and innovations at the core of various research issues to meet the sustainable development demands in agriculture to balance social, economic, and environmental sustainability with AI. AI in Agriculture for Sustainable and Economic Management discusses AI-driven nanotechnology approaches for precision agriculture and solutions for the optimization of farming resources and their management. The authors examine the impact of AI in agriculture and how technology-driven sustainable farming with smart waste-water treatment for zero waste for the circular economy can extend crop shelf-life. It discusses how AI expertise can be advantageous to envisage and evaluate the increasing demands of productivity, and to help to maintain ecosystems and strengthen the capacity for crop adaptation in response to drastic changes in climate and weather, natural disasters, and other significant factors. These findings and practices are also useful to emphasize how an agricultural ecosystem can be advanced and industrialized so that it can aid not only large commercial farms but also smaller farmlands. Finally, it also discusses how AI practices will help to find a balance between the volume of food manufactured and the proper maintenance of the ecosystem. This book is intended for researchers and upper graduate students interested in artificial intelligence in agricultural engineering, AI advances in crop science and technology for sustainable development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book is the re-titled third edition of the extremely well received and widely used Agricultural Extension (van den Ban & Hawkins, 1988, 1996). Building on the previous editions, Communication for Rural Innovation maintains and adapts the insights and conceptual models of value today, while reflecting many new ideas, angles and modes of thinking concerning how agricultural extension is taught and carried through today. Since the previous edition of the book, the number and type of organisations that apply communicative strategies to foster change and development in agriculture and resource management has become much more varied and this book is aimed at those who use communication to facilitate change in agriculture and resource management. Communication for Rural Innovation is essential reading for process facilitators, communication division personnel, knowledge managers, training officers, consultants, policy makers, extension specialists and managers of agricultural extension or research organisations. The book can also be used as an advanced introduction into issues of communicative intervention at BSc or MSc level.
