Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the seventy-three cases in the fourth edition of Paul Siegel’s Cases in Communication Law, twenty-eight are new to this edition. Among these are such Supreme Court decisions as Air Wisconsin Airlines Corporation v. Hoeper, which gives those who follow the post-911 instruction, “if you see something, say something!” some special protection from libel suits; Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association, which explicitly gives maximal First Amendment protection to violent video games, even when sold to minors; U.S. v. Alvarez, which prohibits prosecution for falsely claiming one has been awarded a Medal of Honor; and Snyder v. Phelps, which gave notorious minister Fred Phelps the right to mount demonstrations with rather nasty messages at funerals. Siegel has used several criteria to select cases for inclusion in this and previous editions. He admits unabashedly that one of those criteria is the cultural significance, familiarity, and even celebrity of the controversies or the litigants. Just to cite a few examples, this edition includes cases involving such litigants as Michael Moore, Penn & Teller, Joan Rivers, and Madonna, as well as TV programs like Family Guy, CSI, Law and Order, and featured movies include Disturbia, American Gangster, American Beauty, and The Hangover, Part II.

The Handbook of Communication Rights, Law, and Ethics delivers an extensive review of the challenges facing modern communication rights. It offers readers an examination of the interplay between communication law and ethics and the role played by communication professionals in protecting individuals’ rights to communication. Distinguished authors Loreto Corredoira, Ignacio Bel Mallén and Rodrigo Cetina Presuel walk readers through the fundamental ideas and concepts that represent universal common ground regarding communication rights. They compare communication rights theories developed in Europe, the United States, Latin America, Australia, and East Asia to describe how communication-related freedoms and rights are formulated and applied around the world. Finally, the meaning of the phrases “freedom of expression” and “freedom of the press” are examined in the context of national constitutions and international human rights instruments. The Handbook of Communication Rights, Law, and Ethics provides readers with: A diverse, global perspective on how communication rights are protected and challenged around the world A universal vision of communication rights that encourages dialogue rather than confrontation A comparison of the American First Amendment of the Constitution with European communication rights theories and other legal traditions around the world An exploration of the frontiers of communication rights concepts, terminology, jurisdiction, and territoriality Perfect for professors, graduate students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral researchers studying communication rights and freedom of expression around the world, The Handbook of Communication Rights, Law, and Ethics also belongs on the bookshelves of researchers studying issues surrounding freedom of the press in North America, Europe, and Latin America.

Book excerpt: Updated with fresh examples throughout, the extensively illustrated third edition of Paul Siegel's Communication Law in America is a comprehensive, easy-to-follow overview of the complicated ways in which U.S. law determines who may say what to (and about) whom. Beginning with a clear explanation of the structure and history of the U.S. legal system, Siegel looks at how and why this country has come to place value on the freedom of speech, perhaps above other, sometimes_competing freedoms. He covers the key legal concerns affecting media today, including First Amendment principles, common laws, constitutional considerations, libel laws, invasion of privacy, copyright and trademark, access to government information, covering the judiciary, protecting news sources, advertising, sexual messages and obscenity laws, broadcast regulations, the Internet, and more.

The volume is intended to help graduate students and scholars at all skill levels think about new approaches to questions about communication law by offering a survey of the multidisciplinary work that is now available. It is designed to challenge the conventional notion that traditional legal research and social science methodological approaches are mutually exclusive enterprises. This book has been developed for researchers working in mass communication and law and will be appropriate for graduate students and scholars. It will also appeal to those in psychology, political science, and other areas who are interested in exploring questions of law in their research.

Book excerpt: As every student of mass communication law is aware, most of the law with which journalists deal on a day-to-day basis originates not in our nation's capital but in the statehouse. This is true even though the U.S. Supreme Court has "federalized" much of mass communication law, setting standards for the states to follow. Because these standards allow for differences of opinion and approach, laws affecting freedom of expression still vary significantly from state to state, and even more today than when Dewey Benefield published Georgia Laws and Cases Affecting Newspapers in 1955. This book has been developed as a comprehensive survey of key mass communication law issues and problems in the state of Georgia. Like its first and second editions, it is a primer or introduction to mass communication law in Georgia and a supplement to other texts which discuss mass communication law from a national perspective.
