It affects everything from the type of food that is grown to how it is processed and distributed. Agricultural policy influencers impact the development of the policy and ultimately impact the future of agriculture. Understanding how these policy influencers impact policy is important to understanding policy development. Knowing where agricultural policy influencers get information, how they prefer to have it presented and how they prefer to communicate with other agricultural policy influencers is vital to understanding and impacting the agricultural policy process. The purpose of this study was to describe agricultural policy influencers' preference for three aspects of the communication process; (1) sources of information, (2) formats of information, and (3) methods of communication with other agricultural policy influencers. Two Delphi studies were administered to distinctly separate but intersecting expert groups: Congressional agricultural aides, and agricultural lobbyists. These Delphi studies determined each group's preference for sources of information on agricultural policy, their preference for formats of information, and their preference for methods of communication while communicating with other policy influencers. Since communication is relational, the study broke communication into three sections; (1) communication with peers, (2) communication with members of the opposite expert group with whom there is a close relationship, and (3) communication with members of the opposite expert group with whom there is not a close relationship. Consensus was developed separately for each question and for each group of experts. Data are presented separately throughout this study. In discussing the findings, this study looks at preferences from both sides of the communication interaction. In this way, the study takes two separate Delphi processes and develops them into one clear picture of communication during the policy process. Both groups of experts preferred to have written communication in the form of email and verbal communication in the form of face-to-face and telephone conversations. In addition, both groups preferred to have information presented in the most concise and least time consuming fashion. The data points to the importance of interpersonal relationships, and the need concise and efficient communication methods throughout the policy process. Are they willing to utilize the internet and other communication technologies to communicate? Studies like this are rare and can provide important information for agriculture leaders and managers. With the assistance of the Missouri Farm Bureau Organization, a survey instrument was developed to be distributed to Missouri Farm Bureau leaders and members throughout the state of Missouri focusing on their communication habits. It included questions to determine if they are utilizing communication technologies (i.e. social media, webinars and email) in their daily communication efforts. Since the internet has emerged into a major communications tool, it was important to determine how those in the agricultural industry were using it and/or if they were willing to use it as a future communication tool. Results of this study indicated that Missouri Farm Bureau members and leaders were willing to adopt communication technologies as a way to communicate. In addition, results indicated that factors such as gender, age, education level, residence and leadership position affected communication technology usage. Data collected in this study provided answers as to why some choose not to use internet as a means of communications, as well as determined that advocating efforts were not taking place using communication technologies. Even though respondents were willing to adapt to communication technologies, results indicated that these technologies were not being fully utilized which provides evidence that some improvements in communication methods are needed.

This single-case study explored the attitudes and opinions of current University of Guelph agriculture students and agricultural industry professionals regarding the potential development of an agricultural communications undergraduate program at the University of Guelph and what elements should be included in such a program. Findings established a definite need for and interest in such a program and highlighted a distinct gap in this discipline, and related disciplines, at the University of Guelph. While no distinct format for the program was unanimously agreed upon, participants agreed it should be available in a way that benefits the greatest number of students and also reach those outside of traditional agriculture. Findings imply that the program should encompass a wide range of communication skills and topics and should be differentiated from general communications programs with agricultural influence. Outside of these technical skills, students should have co-op or internship opportunities and have practical experiences during their time in the program.

As one of the nation's most important industries, the agricultural industry has also adopted social media to communicate with consumers and the public. Even though there is a shift from traditional media to digital media, the traditional news media remains important to the agricultural industry because most individuals receive information about the agricultural industry from sources such as newspapers and television. As Ohio's largest industry, the agricultural industry needs to be able to effectively and positively impact the media to communicate truthful and accurate information to consumers and the public. Previous studies have examined why social media is being adopted and how it is being used, but there is little literature about if social media is being used as a media relations tool. A study exploring this topic could benefit agricultural organizations and future research by guiding the development of effective social media practices to communicate with and impact media coverage of the agricultural industry. The purpose of this study is to examine how agricultural organizations in Ohio communicate via social media and how the messages communicated are impacting central Ohio media sources. The study is grounded in the agenda-setting theory, uses and gratifications theory, and previous social media studies. The data was collected from seven Ohio agricultural organizations Facebook pages and four central Ohio news sources and used open coding analysis to determine emerging themes. It was found that Ohio agricultural commodity organizations are using social media, but not to communicate with the news media. It was also found that the agricultural industry is receiving limited news coverage and it was unable to be determined if the Facebook content had an impact on the news media coverage. By communicating the results of this study with agricultural organizations and researchers, effective social media strategies can be developed to guide the future of social media as a media relations tool.
