Book excerpt: Expert-lay communication in the medical field requires the utmost attention to readers’ or listeners’ needs and competences. If these are neglected, laypeople’s comprehension of the message is likely to be negatively affected. Text types like package leaflets and informed consents have been the object of countless studies. In this volume, Giulia Pedrini examines a new document type: the layperson summary of clinical trials. She conducts her analysis from a contrastive and translational perspective in three languages (English, German, and Italian). All texts are instances of interlingual translations of simplified documents written in Plain Language; a still widely unexplored niche within the field of translation studies.

Book excerpt: Festivals are an important part of the music event industry, especially for young adults. But compared to the beginnings, their meanings have changed: Attendees want to celebrate without any compromises. However, today mankind is confronted with the greatest sustainability challenges, which are not satisfactorily tackled. Still, with a rising awareness of these issues, companies’ interest in including sustainability issues in their communications strategy has increased. This study attempts to explore how a Sustainability Communication (SC) concept needs to be designed to reach fans of music festivals and influence them towards a more sustainable behaviour. For that purpose, it deals with sustainability management, background information about SC and the attendees’ needs. Moreover, it shows rays of hope for this issue in the festival landscape. Afterwards the results of a survey conducted among festival fans (more than 750 participants), examining their attitude regarding sustainability issues, were assessed. This study aims to equip the reader with a thorough knowledge of the potential of Sustainability Communication within and through festivals, as well as give an insight into how a SC strategy must consider the needs of fans to realize a more sustainable event.

Book excerpt: This book explores communication in emergency call and response centers, taking an approach drawn from Conversation Analysis to examine how call-takers answer calls and the ways in which dispatch is issued in different contexts. It offers an original contribution to the study of the organization of emergency calls, the ways such calls are treated, and some of the practical problems that emerge when dealing with them. The author offers a systematic review of studies in the international field of the organization of emergency calls, while at the same time providing fresh case studies, illustrated with empirical materials, taken from audio- and video- recordings of the everyday activities of call and response centers. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of social interaction and may be appreciated by all scholars and practitioners working on the social management of emergency situations, including in fields such as Sociolinguistics and Pragmatics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary goal of the volume on "Visual Communication" is to provide a collection of high quality, accessible papers that offer an overview of the different academic approaches to Visual Communication, the different theoretical perspectives on which they are based, the methods of analysis used and the different media and genre that have come under analysis. There is no such existing volume that draws together this range of closely related material generally found in much less related areas of research, including semiotics, art history, design, and new media theory. The volume has a total of 34 individual chapters that are organized into two sections: theories and methods, and areas of visual analysis. The chapters are all written by quality theorists and researchers, with a view that the research should be accessible to non-specialists in their own field while at the same time maintaining a high quality of work. The volume contains an introduction, which plots and locates the different approaches contained in it within broader developments and history of approaches to visual communication across different disciplines as each has attempted to define its terrain sometimes through unique concepts and methods sometimes through those borrowed and modified from others.
