The use of animals for therapy is a burgeoning form of treatment for individuals with physical, emotional, or psychological illnesses. Written for students and general readers, Animal-Assisted Therapy offers a historical overview of the practice, detailing its growth and the many ways it is practiced today. Filled with illustrative examples, such as successful programs where children with reading problems read aloud to canine companions, the book illuminates the expansive nature and effectiveness of this therapy as it is practiced both generally and among special populations, including children, the elderly, autistic individuals, and the incarcerated. The book also provides specific information that will be of interest to pet owners who want to get involved in these programs and includes information on U.S. government requirements allowing guide dogs in public and private facilities.

Book excerpt: “Finally, someone has written about the best kept mental health secret: how dogs save psyches, hearts, minds, and sometimes, quite literally, lives . . .”—Belleruth Naparstek, LISW, author of Invisible Heroes As the more than 65 million dog-owners in America will attest, there’s something about the presence of a dog that inspires confidence, nurtures emotional well-being, and brings out the best in ourselves. But for some people, the presence of a dog can do even more. Written by the leading expert in an emerging new field of therapy, Healing Companions is the first book to detail how dogs are increasingly benefiting those who suffer from a range of emotional ills, from eating disorders and anxiety, to agoraphobia, depression, and post-traumatic stress. Healing Companions will teach you: What criteria to consider when choosing the right dog for you. What kind of training service dogs require. What to expect and how to respond when you take a service dog out in public. How a dog can complement other forms of therapy. How to navigate the procedural regulations that apply to a service dog. How to recognize the dog’s needs and provide it with proper care. And much more. “Animals are more complete than people. They are wonderful teachers, therapists and role models for us all. Read Healing Companions and learn about their ability to guide and heal us all.”—Bernie Siegel, MD, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love, Animals, and Miracles “This book should be required reading for everybody who is considering getting a psychiatric service dog or is working on training them.”—Temple Grandin, author of Animals Make Us Human

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the third in a series of independent analyses by the National Council on Disability on federal enforcement of civil rights laws. This report looks at the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) enforcement activities from 1990 to 1999 of four key federal agencies: the Department of Justice, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Department of Transportation, and the Federal Communications Commission. Findings indicate that while the Clinton Administration has consistently asserted its strong support for the civil rights of people with disabilities, the federal agencies charged with enforcement and policy development under ADA have been underfunded, overly cautious, reactive, and lacking any coherent and unifying national strategy. In addition, it is found that enforcement agencies have not consistently taken leadership roles in emergent issues. The following recommendations are made: (1) the Department of Justice should provide assertive leadership for ADA implementation and develop a strategic vision and plan for ADA enforcement across the federal government; and (2) the Departments of Justice and Transportation, the EEOC, and the Title II referral agencies should strengthen methods for the timely and effective enforcement of ADA. Appendices include a summary of the ADA. (CR)

Book excerpt: “Do your pet and yourself a favor: Buy this book, and when you’re done reading it, keep it in the medicine cabinet for the next time you need salve for your soul.” — Marty Becker, D.V.M., veterinary contributor for Good Morning America, chief veterinary correspondent for Amazon, and author of The Healing Power of Pets It was 1994, and Mike Lingenfelter was ready for his life to be over. Two serious heart attacks and open-heart surgery had taken away most of the good things that he had in his life. However, his doctors still held out hope for him, and they were trying to find ways to motivate him to get out of the house and exercise. Their vision was that an energetic dog on a leash might do that for Mike. And so it was that this golden retriever named Dakota, who had been rescued from death himself, came to help Mike with his rehabilitative therapy. Eventually, Dakota became Mike’s protector and his best friend, saving Mike’s life several times after somehow learning how to alert Mike of oncoming heart crises. Dakota gave Mike back his dignity, his pride, and his life. Early on, it became evident to Mike that this wonderful 98-pound, red-haired, four-legged angel had a special gift: Dakota was a spirit guide, and it was Mike’s duty to share him and the power of the human-animal bond. Ultimately, as part of that journey, one more miracle was needed, as Dakota fought a courageous and dignified battle for his own life.
