Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Common Snakes of India and Burma, and How to Recognise Them I had this desire so strongly when I first came to India that I bought Dr. Nicholson's book on Indian Snakes, and later on welcomed the publication of Major Wall's book on Poisonous Indian Snakes. From these books I have found it possible to identify all the snakes I have come across. But Wall's book deals only with poisonous snakes and Nicholson is so comprehensive that it takes a lot of time and hard work for the ordinary man to find what he wants. I gradually simplified matters for myself by making notes, classifying. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Each description is supported by a colour photograph taken where possible in the snake's natural Indian habitat. The guide looks at the more common species such as the Travancore wolf snake and the Indian black turtle and also focuses on some of the rarer, and in some cases highly endangered, species such as the king cobra, the unique Gharial crocodile and the Indian star tortoise.

Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Language of the Snakes traces the history of the Prakrit language as a literary phenomenon, starting from its cultivation in courts of the Deccan in the first centuries of the common era. Although little studied today, Prakrit was an important vector of the kavya movement and once joined Sanskrit at the apex of classical Indian literary culture. The opposition between Prakrit and Sanskrit was at the center of an enduring “language order” in India, a set of ways of thinking about, naming, classifying, representing, and ultimately using languages. As a language of classical literature that nevertheless retained its associations with more demotic language practices, Prakrit both embodies major cultural tensions—between high and low, transregional and regional, cosmopolitan and vernacular—and provides a unique perspective onto the history of literature and culture in South Asia.
