Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial Education in Public Secondary Schools This book deals with some important contemporary problems of commercial education in secondary schools, considered from the point of View of the investi gator, teacher, and administrative officer, and aims at con structive proposais based on the actual needs of business as it is. These constructive proposals are the outcome of a critical examination of contemporary commercial education in secondary schools, together with certain investigations in the field of business in several cities in the United States, and of earlier studies by the author of commercial education in Europe. The volume also contains, in Chapter VI, Mr. Thompson's report on commercial education in the high schools of the city of New York, constituting a part of my report submitted to the Committee on School Inquiry of the Board of Estimate and Apportionment in 1912. Although, as Mr. Thompson says in his Preface, there is considerable literature on commercial education, it is also true that there is much uncertainty and not a little actual misconception concerning the aims, scope, and methods of education for commercial life in the minds of business men and teachers alike - confusion and misconceptions that in terfere with the formulation of just aims, and prevent profitable endeavor in preparing our young people for busi ness careers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial Education in Secondary Schools AT the present time, public secondary commercial education, in response to public desire, is rapidly ad justing its work to meet the changing needs of our social and economic systems. As a result, the public second ary schools are setting standards that are to dominate secondary commercial instruction. Recognition of the fact that commercial education has a definite place in the public vocational program has resulted in many questions concerning the definition of the field for which commercial education should train, concerning the efficiency of current facilities for commercial education, and concerning the range, methods of organization and presentation of commercial work offered. It is the purpose of this book to analyze such questions as the foregoing, to define commercial education, and to establish fundamental principles by which further pro gress should be guided. Download or read book The World We Want : How and Why the Ideals of the Enlightenment Still Elude Us written by Robert B. Louden Professor of Philosophy University of Southern Maine and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2007-09-21 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World We Want compares the future world that Enlightenment intellectuals had hoped for with our own world at present. In what respects do the two worlds differ, and why are they so different? To what extent is and isn't our world the world they wanted, and to what extent do we today still want their world? Unlike previous philosophical critiques and defenses of the Enlightenment, the present study focuses extensively on the relevant historical and empirical record first, by examining carefully what kind of future Enlightenment intellectuals actually hoped for; second, by tracking the different legacies of their central ideals over the past two centuries. But in addition to documenting the significant gap that still exists between Enlightenment ideals and current realities, the author also attempts to show why the ideals of the Enlightenment still elude us. What does our own experience tell us about the appropriateness of these ideals? Which Enlightenment ideals do not fit with human nature? Why is meaningful support for these ideals, particularly within the US, so weak at present? Which of the means that Enlightenment intellectuals advocated for realizing their ideals are inefficacious? Which of their ideals have devolved into distorted versions of themselves when attempts have been made to realize them? How and why, after more than two centuries, have we still failed to realize the most significant Enlightenment ideals? In short, what is dead and what is living in these ideals?

Book Synopsis Understanding the Classical Music Profession by : Dr Dawn Elizabeth Bennett
Download or read book Understanding the Classical Music Profession written by Dr Dawn Elizabeth Bennett and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the Classical Music Profession is an essential resource for educators, practitioners and researchers who seek to understand the careers of classically-trained musicians, and the extent to which professional practice is reflected within existing classical performance-based music education and training. Taking Australia as a case-study, Dawn Bennett outlines how Australia is now a service economy, and an important component of service provision is in the culture and recreation industries. Despite this, employment in culture and recreation is poorly understood and a lack of cultural intelligence contributes to a less than satisfactory environment that inhibits the creative potential of cultural practitioners. Musicians in the twenty-first century require a broad and evolving base of skills and knowledge to sustain their careers as cultural practitioners. Bennett maintains that a musician cannot be simply defined as a performer, but that a musician is someone who works within the profession of music in one or more specialist fields. The perception of a musician as a multi-skilled professional working within a portfolio career has significant implications for policy, funding, education and training, and for practitioners and students seeking to achieve sustainable careers. This indispensable book provides a comprehensive analysis of life as a musician, from education and training to professional practice as well as revealing the structure of the Australian cultural industries. Although Australia is the focus of the book, the basis of the research originates from many different places and most of the issues discussed relate directly to other countries throughout the world.
