Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentaries on the Catholic Epistles With regard to the Second Epistle of peter, doubts have been entertained by some as to its authenticity. It appears that it was not at first so widely known as his First Epistle; and this was probably the reason why there were some during the first three centuries who did not regard it as genuine. But it has been quoted as a part of Scripture by some Of the earliest Fathers, and fully acknowledged as authentic by those of the fourth and succeeding centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Commentary on the New Testament, Vol. 4 of 4: By English and American Scholars of Various Evangelical Denominations; With Illustrations and Maps, the Catholic Epistles and Revelation In fact, Clement has frequently quoted from the Epistle in his own Epistle to the Corinthians, written it is generally admitted twenty or thirty years later, and quoted it with passages taken from Holy Scripture.l Of course he would hardly have made those quotations if he had been himself the author. His own Epistle, more over, addressed to the Church at Corinth, and intended to allay the spirit of division that prevailed then, is a good specimen of early Christian writing, but it is very different, as any one may see, from the Epistle to the Hebrews. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans This is the second circumstance in the providential prepara tion of the apostle for his work, which is worthy of notice. As Luther was educated in a Roman Catholic seminary, and tho roughly instructed in the scholastic theology of which he was to be the great opposer, so the apostle Paul was initiated into all the doctrines and modes of reasoning of the Jews, with whom his principal controversy was to be carried on. The early adversaries of the gospel were all Jews. Even in the heathen cities they were so numerous, that it was through them and their proselytes that the church in such places was founded. We find, therefore, that in almost all his epistles, the apostle contends with Jewish errorists, the corrupters of the gospel, by means of Jewish doctrines. Paul, the most extensively useful of all the apostles, was thus a thoroughly educated man; a man educated with a special View to the work which he was called to perform. We find, therefore, in this, as in most similar cases, that God efi'ects his purposes by these instruments which he has, in the ordinary course of his providence, specially fitted for their accomplishment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Commentary on the Epistles of St. John: In Continuation of the Work of Olshausen; With an Appendix on the Catholic Epistles, and an Introductory Essay on the Life and Writings of St. John Three of our Lord's Apostles stand out prominently from the general circle: St John, St Peter, and St Paul. The last was not in the number of the Twelve. Among them St James, the son of Zebedee and brother of St John, had been singled out by Christ to be the companion of St John and St Peter in the special distinction of witnessing His transfiguration and His deepest humiliation (mark v. 37 Matt. Xvii. 1, xxvi. 37) but St James soon followed his Master in a death of martyrdom (acts xii. And on that account is less known to us than the rest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of St. Peter Verse 3 According to His great mercy. I am glad and grateful that the pregnant passage is prefaced by this word. The regenerated soul is just enveloped in great mercy. Now mercy implies sympathy. We cannot have mercy without sympathy. Without mercy we cannot have leniency; but leniency is only thin, pinched fruit compared with the fat, qcy fruit Of mercy. Without sympathy we may have giving, but unsympathetic giving is like the cold, outer threshold, while mercy is like a glowing hearthstone. Mercy implies sympathy. GO a step further. Sympathy suggests the choicest companionship, the rarest Of all fellow ships. Where there is true sympathy, there is the most exquisite companionship. If then, our God and Father enswathes us in great mercy, He visits in the sweetest fellowships. Therefore in the redeemed life there can be no loneliness, for in the Father's presence all possible loneliness is destroyed. The mercy which implies companionship accompanies me as a dynamic from my faintest breathing as a babe-christian on to the consummation when I shall have become a full-grown man in Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans Coleridge calls the Epistle to the Romans the profoundest book in existence. Chrysostom had it read to him twice a week. Luther, in his famous preface, says This Epistle is the chief book of the New Testa ment, the purest gospel. It deserves not only to be known word for word by every Christian, but to be the subject of his meditation day by day, the daily bread of his soul. The more time one Spends on it, the more precious it becomes and the better it appears. Melanchthon, in order to make it perfectly his own, copied it twice with his own hand. It is the book which he expounded most frequently in his lectures. The Reforma tion was undoubtedly the work of the Epistle to the Romans, as well as of that to the Galatians; and the probability is that every great Spiritual revival in the church will be connected as effect and cause with a deeper understanding of this book. This observation unquestionably applies to the various religious awakenings which have successively marked the course of our century. The exposition of such a book is capable of boundless progress. In studying the Epistle to the Romans we feel ourselves at every word face to face with the unfathomable. Our experience is somewhat analogous to what we feel when contemplating the great masterpieces of mediaeval archi tecture, such, for example, as the Cathedral of Milan. We do not know which to admire most, the majesty of the whole or the finish of the details, and every look makes the discovery of some new perfection. And yet the excellence of the book with which we are about to be occupied should by no means discourage the expositor; it is much rather fitted to stimulate him. What book of the New Testament, says Meyer, in his preface to the fifth edition of his commentary, less entitles the expositor to spare his pains than this, the greatest and richest of all the apostolic works? Only it must not be imagined that to master its meaning nothing more is needed than the philological analysis of the text, or even the theological study of the contents. The true understanding of this masterpiece of the apostolic mind is reserved for those who approach it with the heart de scribed by Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount, the heart hungering and thirsting after righteousness. For what is the Epistle to the Romans 2 The offer of the righteousness of God to the man who finds himself stripped by the law of his own righteousness (i. To understand such a book we must yield ourselves to the current of the intention under which it was dic tated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Epistle to the Ephesians After remaining eighteen months in Corinth, at the con clusion of his second missionary tour, he sailed thence to Eph csus in company with Priscilla and Aquila. He left his companions there, but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews. When they desired him to tarry longer with them he consented not: but bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem; but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus. After his departure, Apollos, an eloquent man, and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Eph csus. This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the Spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things Of the Lord, knowing only the baptism Of John. And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue; whom, when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and Oxpounded unto him the way Of God more perfectly. Acts - 26. Paul, agreeably to his promise, returned to Ephesus, pro bably in the fall Of the year 54. Here he found certain disciples who had received only John's baptism, to whom Paul said: John verily baptized with the baptism Of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this they were baptized in the name Of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spake with tongues and prophesied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's Second Epistle to the Thessalonians Under its modern name of Salonika, Thessalonica, owing to the great war, has become far more widely known than it was previously. Thousands of persons who had hitherto scarcely heard of such a place, and certainly had very vague ideas as to its geographical position, now know accurately where to find it in the map and are aware of its importance with regard to its principal surroundings. But beyond this fact of its having become a very important city, both from a military and from a political point of view, we are in no better position for understanding the condition of the place at the time when a portion of its inhabitants were a community of the deepest interest to St. Paul and multitudes of other Christians. Nor are we likely to be in a better position for so doing when the war is over. On the contrary, we shall probably find that some of the features which a few years ago were not so very different from what they may have been in his day have been either entirely obliterated or very seriously transformed and disfigured. It is true that the war has added rather considerably to our knowledge of the archaeology of the immediate neighbourhood. Some of those who have been obliged through recent events to take up their abode there for a time have used this opportunity for making explorations in the interests of antiquarian research; and their labours have had considerable results. We are now learning a good deal more about the early history of this interesting tract of country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference volume aims to be a kind of comprehensive status quaestionis for the Catholic Epistles. Here Darian Lockett has collected some of the highest quality scholarship concentred upon the Letters of James, Peter, ohn, and Jude, creating an introduction and orientation to the wide ranging avenues of scholarly investigation into these New Testament texts all in a single-volume. Divided into four distinct sections, the volume begins with an analysis of the Catholic Epistles as a collection, before moving to discuss historical-critical and theological studies, methodological approaches, and, finally, reception history. Taking care to situate foundational essays in the history of scholarship that may be hard to find or contextualize, Lockett offers a brief introduction to each section and draws each section to a close by providing a list of annotated readings which prompt further study and engagement with some of the last literature to be settled upon in the New Testament canon.
