Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Oscar Wilde was convicted of gross indecency in 1895, a reporter for the National Observer wrote that there was "not a man or a woman in the English-speaking world possessed of the treasure of a wholesome mind who is not under a deep debt of gratitude to the marquis of Queensberry for destroying the high Priest of the Decadents." But reports of the death of decadence were greatly exaggerated, and today, more than one hundred years after the famous trial and at the beginning of a new millennium, the phenomenon of decadence continues to be a significant cultural force. Indeed, "decadence" in the nineteenth century, and in our own period, has been a concept whose analysis yields a broad set of associations. In Perennial Decay, Emily Apter, Charles Bernheimer, Sylvia Molloy, Michael Riffaterre, Barbara Spackman, Marc Weiner, and others extend the critical field of decadence beyond the traditional themes of morbidity, the cult of artificiality, exoticism, and sexual nonconformism. They approach the question of decadence afresh, reevaluating the continuing importance of late nineteenth-century decadence for contemporary literary and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Fetishism and Fatal Women by : Linda Saladin
Download or read book Fetishism and Fatal Women written by Linda Saladin and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1993 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fetishism and Fatal Women locates the functional value of the feminine, principally within the discourse of male authors. The thematic focus is on the fetishized image of Salome in late 19th and early 20th-century British and Continental literature. Part one offers a theoretical look at the polarization and domination of the feminine image within masculine rhetoric. Subsequent chapters include close readings of J.K. Huysmans' A Rebours, Oscar Wilde'sSalome, selected works of William Butler Yeats, and selected visual images. As these readings are linked to current theory, Fetishism and Fatal Women reviews the dubious genealogy which restricts femininity in general and speculates on how to demystify gender restraints.

Book Synopsis The Rhetoric of Topics and Forms by : Gianna Zocco
Download or read book The Rhetoric of Topics and Forms written by Gianna Zocco and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress “The Many Languages of Comparative Literature” includes articles that study thematic and formal elements of literary texts. Although the question of prioritizing either the level of content or that of form has often provoked controversies, most contributions here treat them as internally connected. While theoretical considerations inform many of the readings, the main interest of most articles can be described as rhetorical (in the widest sense) – given that the ancient discipline of rhetoric did not only include the study of rhetorical figures and tropes such as metaphor, irony, or satire, but also that of topoi, which were originally viewed as the ‘places’ where certain arguments could be found, but later came to represent the arguments or intellectual themes themselves. Another feature shared by most of the articles is the tendency of ‘undeclared thematology’, which not only reflects the persistence of the charge of positivism, but also shows that most scholars prefer to locate themselves within more specific, often interdisciplinary fields of literary study. In this sense, this volume does not only prove the ongoing relevance of traditional fields such as rhetoric and thematology, but provides contributions to currently flourishing research areas, among them literary multilingualism, literature and emotions, and ecocriticism.
