Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fragmented information that consumers receive about the nutritional value and health risks associated with fish and shellfish can result in confusion or misperceptions about these food sources. Consumers are therefore confronted with a dilemma: they are told that seafood is good for them and should be consumed in large amounts, while at the same time the federal government and most states have issued advisories urging caution in the consumption of certain species or seafood from specific waters. Seafood Choices carefully explores the decision-making process for selecting seafood by assessing the evidence on availability of specific nutrients (compared to other food sources) to obtain the greatest nutritional benefits. The book prioritizes the potential for adverse health effects from both naturally occurring and introduced toxicants in seafood; assesses evidence on the availability of specific nutrients in seafood compared to other food sources; determines the impact of modifying food choices to reduce intake of toxicants on nutrient intake and nutritional status within the U.S. population; develops a decision path for U.S. consumers to weigh their seafood choices to obtain nutritional benefits balanced against exposure risks; and identifies data gaps and recommendations for future research. The information provided in this book will benefit food technologists, food manufacturers, nutritionists, and those involved in health professions making nutritional recommendations.

Download or read book Seafood written by Shingo Hamada and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seafood draws on controversial themes in the interdisciplinary field of food studies, with case studies from different eras and geographic regions. Using familiar commodities, this accessible book will help students understand cutting-edge issues in sustainability and ask readers to think about the future of an industry that has lain waste to its own resources. Examining the practical aspects of fisheries and seafood leads the reader through discussions of the core elements of anthropological method and theory, and the book concludes with discussions of sustainable seafood and current efforts to save what is left of marine ecosystems. Students will be encouraged to think about their own seafood consumption through project assignments that challenge them to trace the commodity chains of the seafood on their own plates. Seafood is an ideal book for courses on food and culture, economic anthropology, and the environment.

Book Synopsis P3-08-03 - A Systematic Review of the Determinants of Seafood Consumption by : Sophie Govzman
Download or read book P3-08-03 - A Systematic Review of the Determinants of Seafood Consumption written by Sophie Govzman and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: A systematic review of the determinants of seafood consumption.Design: Systematic review. Background: Little is known about the factors which influence seafood consumption in Irish adults at present. This review is to provide a basis for a larger project being carried out in UCD - the Seafood Consumption and Risk Exposure Study (SCaRES) - examination of seafood consumption in the Irish population. This project aims to generate food consumption data, on seafood, consumers to improve the characterisation of the risk from exposure to bio-toxins and other contaminants from consuming shellfish. This systematic review will serve the purpose of reviewing published literature examining the characteristics of seafood consumers, as well as the barriers and influences on seafood consumption. Methods: Data sources PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched for articles published between January 2008 and January 2018 investigating the characteristics of seafood consumers. Search terms include the following: factors OR influences OR determinants OR indicators AND fish OR seafood OR shellfish OR marine products AND diet OR dietary intake OR intake OR consumption. Articles, in English which investigated factors influencing seafood/fish consumption in adults (18+) were included. Results: A total of 3964 unique articles were found, after duplicates (n=1537) were removed. Following this, a further 3531 articles were excluded based on title and abstract. The remaining articles (n=433) were screened based on inclusion criteria. After the initial systematic search, 105 papers met the inclusion criteria. Preliminary analysis to date demonstrated the following; seafood consumers were more likely to be older, more affluent (in terms of income, employment level and/or socioeconomic status), more physically active, and were less likely to smoke compared to non seafood consumers. Sex and Body Mass Index did not seem to have a clear influence on seafood consumption. The most commonly reported barriers to seafood consumption were cost, followed by sensory barriers, habits, beliefs (such as the belief that the product is contaminated), education, location and psychology. The most commonly reported influences on seafood consumption were the belief that seafood was healthy, followed by habits, education, psychology, cost and location. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this review, future interventions looking to increase consumption of fish and seafood should focus oneducating consumers about the health benefits of including fish and seafood products in the diet. Providing accurate food safety information may help correct inaccurate beliefs regarding levels of contamination within seafood.

Book Synopsis The Role of Seafood Consumption in Child Growth and Development by : National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine
Download or read book The Role of Seafood Consumption in Child Growth and Development written by National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine and published by . This book was released on 2024-12-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seafood--including marine and freshwater fish, mollusks, and crustaceans--is a healthy food choice, but it can also contain contaminants. It is currently unclear how much seafood children or pregnant and lactating women are consuming, and what impact seafood consumption is having on children's growth and development. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration tasked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine with convening an expert committee to examine associations between seafood intake for children, adolescents, and pregnant and lactating women and child growth and development. The committee also evaluated when to conduct risk-benefit analyses (RBAs), while considering contextual factors such as equity, diversity, inclusion, and access to health care, and explored how these factors might impact RBAs.
