Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commemoration of the Battle of Harlem Plains on Its One Hundredth Anniversary by the New York Historical Society Dear sir - The Society has resolved upon an out-door celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Harlem Plains, the 16th of September next. The gathering will be in the neighborhood of the scene of action, and it is intended to have a military pageant and an oration. It is the wish of the committee that the oration should be delivered by some New York gentleman, and our eyes naturally turn to you as a representative of old New York. I am instructed to earnestly request that you will undertake this duty, and to add that the resources of this Library will be placed at your disposal for any historical research you may desire to make in the preparation of an address.
