Book excerpt: This book explains how to take surreptitious photographs and record video of people and property in a safe and effective manner while producing excellent results. It is the most comprehensive text on clandestine photography available. It takes the reader through conventional as well as the most sophisticated clandestine photography methods in practice today, and it covers the use of all types of equipment ranging from off-the-shelf to the most high-tech equipment available. The ultra-long-range night vision photography methods discussed in this book were devised by the authors and only exist here. Readers will discover esoteric techniques for photographically recording recognizable human and vehicle plate images from distances of over a mile in both daylight and night conditions. Myriad methods for secretly photographing people and property under diverse and difficult conditions are presented. Readers will discover innovative applications of combinations of old and new photographic-related technologies—some combined in unexpected ways that produce surprising results. It is written and extremely well illustrated in an easy to understand style for all photographers regardless of skill level. The book is appropriate for anyone in law enforcement, military operations, and private investigation. It will also benefit government surveillance specialists and those responsible for detecting and thwarting manual clandestine photography.

Book excerpt: This updated and expanded new edition is a significant revision of the second edition, presented 14 years previous. This edition provides the most current information about surveillance methods, supporting photographic equipment, and vision enhancing products. Although physical surveillance remains an intuitive art regarding the secret visual observation of a person, activity, or location, important new science and technology improved the tools and with that came enriched tradecraft. Physical surveillance may be urban or rural, stationary or mobile, foot or vehicular, or occur on public transportation. In fact, one surveillance operation can feature several or all of them. This edition presents the latest methods, which investigators continually adapt to the immediate circumstances. Updated chapters include: Surveillance Applications, Vehicular Surveillance, Stationary Surveillance, Undercover Surveillance, Vision and Aids for Vision Extension and Enhancement, Surveillance Photography, Tips for the Surveillant, and Report Writing. In addition the text is richly illustrated with important and helpful examples. Because physical surveillance precedes virtually all organized criminal and terrorist attacks, security personnel need the capacity to detect surveillance and that requires truly understanding it. Written in a style that professional investigators prefer, the information is presented quickly, decisively, and to the point. Whether the reader is a novice or veteran investigator, in law enforcement or civil investigation, this unique book offers a complete, cohesive, and expert text on the subject of physical surveillance. It represents the most current and authoritative resource available.

Book excerpt: Sea Kayaking covers the basics of equipment and technique, including types of paddles and strokes, as well as such essential skills as how to read the weather and the water, how to navigate with and without GPS and how to travel with a group. Still regarded as “the bible” for both new and experienced kayakers after more than thirty years in print. Drawing on his many years of experience paddling in all climates, John Dowd presents practical advice on dealing with potential hazards (from surf to sea ice to sharks), carrying out rescues and planning for long-distance expeditions. New for this edition are hints about digital technologies for planning and navigating while kayak touring as well as lots of tips for outfitting boats, adapting equipment and finessing fishing technique while kayak angling—whether casting and jigging for fun on a day trip or trolling for dinner on a longer expedition. Also fully updated are the sections on managing risk and the inspiring stories of adventure, including Freya Hoffmeister’s record-breaking circumnavigation of Australia and Japanese paddlers’ increasingly challenging trips around the islands and beyond. As a sport, sea kayaking continues to evolve. Once the sport of a very few long-distance paddlers embarking on international expeditions, then the recreational pursuit of many weekend tourers, sea kayaking is now popular with many day trippers as well. As more and more paddlers take to the water—for the day, the weekend or many months, this classic guide continues to be required reading for those seeking adventure on the open ocean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Looking around the room, through something of a deafening haze, I realised that of the 17 or so people who had paddled around the British Isles at that time, no fewer than half were here. And so, in that moment, the idea was born. One day I was going to join that club.” This is an account of the 19th circumnavigation of Britain by sea kayak – by the oldest paddler to complete this, the premier sea kayak expedition in British waters. In 2008, Rowland Woollven and Cath Tanner set off from Ilfracombe in North Devon with the intention of returning there – via Cape Wrath and Dover! – later that same year. Things did not quite go according to plan, however; beset by bad weather and other delays, it was not until 2012 that Rowland, now accompanied by Wendy and Barry Bramley, paddled back into Ilfracombe Harbour. Sticking With It is the intensely personal story of how one man’s dream unfolded, reaching a successful conclusion after epic adventures around more than 2,000 nautical miles of Britain’s stunning coastline. Share the lows and highs of an extended expedition – from days spent wet and cold, stormbound, in remote locations, to the views and experiences of the coast open only to those who adventure in sea kayaks. Although they combine to complete one overall voyage, this is an account of three very different expeditions, each with its own personality. What does it feel like to have to paddle for one’s life – and how does it feel to finally accomplish a long sought-after dream? Sticking With It is Rowland’s fascinating story, and will appeal to fans of travel writing, in particular sailing and kayaking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the German occupation of his native Denmark in April 1940 Anders Lassen had no interest in the War. Yet over the next five years he became a highly decorated Special Forces legend and the only non-Commonwealth recipient of the Victoria Cross. After taking part in a mutiny on board a Danish ship, he made his way to Scotland. He first joined the Special Operations Executive before serving with the Small Scale Raiding Force, Special Air Service and Special Boat Service. He took part in the daring Operation Postmaster, off West Africa, and raided the Channel Islands and the Normandy coast. He saw most action in Eastern Mediterranean, fighting in Crete, the Dodecanese, Yugoslavia, mainland Greece and finally Italy. In April 1945, now a major aged 24, he was killed at Lake Comacchio, where his gallantry earned him his posthumous VC. This superb biography is not just a worthy tribute to an outstanding soldier, but a superb account of the numerous special force operations Anders was involved in.

Rob was a Special Forces operator with some of the world finest regiments and served in four national armies over a career that has spanned forty years and continues today. In 1965 he earned the converted Green Beret as a member of 2 Commando Australia. He left in 1968 to Southeast Asia. Finding work of a military nature in Laos, (in the war that never was). The end of the contract found him in England where he joined the British Parachute Regiment and completed three tours in Northern Ireland at the height of the troubles, taking part in Operation Demetrius. On his last tour, he was detached from his battalion and worked covert operations with a little-known group called the MRF (Military Reaction Force). 1974 saw Rob in Rhodesia as a member of the internationally acclaimed C Squadron SAS, where he was wounded on operations twice. This was a turning point in Rob’s life as he surrendered to Christ becoming a Christian. He was to carry on as an operator, but now with a biblical world view. Rob was recruited in 1980 by the South African Defense Force and was a member of 6 Reconnaissance Commando Special Forces and later became an operative with what was commonly called ‘the funnies’ or CSI Chief of Staff Intelligence. From 1996 to 2007 Rob was in South Sudan and Iraq, receiving a letter of commendation from the United States Army. Still active today, Rob specializes in close protection and tactical security training for civilian personnel.

Book excerpt: In Sea Kayaking, , comprehensive guide for those who travel the open waters in the Southern Hemisphere, Philip Woodhouse, Australian paddler and Royal Australian Air Force veteran, shares his years of experience, technical training, and military teaching skills. What began as a personal reference was soon developed as a training manual, recommended by the Victorian Sea Kayak Club to its membersand East Coast Kayaking to their patrons and Australian Canoeing students. Sea Kayaking covers boat design, kit requirements, paddling skills, health and well-being, meteorology, the ocean environment, navigation, communications, conservation andminimal-impact camping, conservation, seamanship, electrical bilge pumps, solar panels, light sources, boat repairs, leadership, risk management, basic safety and survival strategies , as well as a brief overview about the history and various types of canoeing.. There is also a comprehensive glossary to assist the reader in understanding the terms and concepts discussed in the main text. Woodhouses work differs from most manuals about sea kayaking in that it is written from the perspective of someone who paddles the Southern Hemisphere. As such, the major differences between the two hemispheresweather patterns, navigation, laws, and terminologyare discussed, as well as compared to their Northern Hemisphere counterparts. In the end, paddling skills are paddling skills, hypothermia is hypothermia, and twenty-five-knot winds are twenty-five-knot winds. A three-metre tidal range can still produce a long haul across mud flats when the tide is outand landing through two-metre surf is still scary (though a lot of fun), no matter where you paddle.
