Book excerpt: I knew I was gay at age eight when my mother's definition of queer described me perfectly. I hid my truth and left small town Pennsylvania for the city life of Washington, DC. immediately after college graduation. My mother carried memories of tragic family deaths and a lesbian encounter of her own. When she questioned my lifestyle and said she would "blame herself and not know what to do for the rest of her life," I thought she might take her own life so, I lied. My father, raised in the non-traditional life of circus performers, unleashed me to be whoever I wanted to be but I continued my double life of straight daughter and gay lover. Then becoming a teacher and high school principal, I also lived a secret nocturnal life-my triple life. Bartending in shady parts of D.C., I was hit by a rock, saw a gun pulled on my friend, and witnessed fights, arrests, and marches that pitted straights against gays. I jumped from girlfriend to girlfriend, courted a few straight girls, and dabbled in activities far different from the straight educator I portrayed by day. On the day of my father's funeral, my mother proclaimed her recognition of my gayness. What I hoped would be a celebration of love and openness was anticlimactic. I had wasted too many years. My father was gone, and I had lost friends rather than share my truth. Against the backdrop of the burgeoning LGBTQ movement, I became a courageous trailblazer and did my own coming out in a big way, I married a woman. Now I share my truth with the world and enjoy the happiness that honesty has given me. Do not make the mistakes I made. Openly love who you love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory and comprehensive history of the gay Right from incisive political commentator Neil J. Young. One of the most maligned, misunderstood, and even mocked constituencies in American politics, gay Republicans regularly face condemnation from both the LGBTQ+ community and their own political party. Yet they’ve been active and influential for decades. Gay conservatives were instrumental, for example, in ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and securing the legalization of same-sex marriage—but they also helped lay the groundwork for the rise of Donald Trump. In Coming Out Republican, political historian and commentator Neil J. Young provides the first comprehensive history of the gay Right. From the 1950s up to the present day, Young excavates the multifarious origins, motivations, and evolutions of LGBTQ+ people who found their way to the institutions and networks of modern conservatism. Many on the gay Right have championed conservative values—like free markets, a strong national defense, and individual liberty—and believed that the Republican Party therefore offered LGBTQ+ people the best pathway to freedom. Meanwhile, that same party has actively and repeatedly demonized them. With his precise and provocative voice, Young details the complicated dynamics of being in—and yet never fully accepted into—the Republican Party. Coming Out Republican provides striking insight into who LGBTQ+ conservatives are, what they want, and why many of them continue to align with a party whose rank and file largely seem to hate them. As the Republican Party renews its assaults on LGBTQ+ rights, understanding the significant history of the gay Right has never been more critical.

Book excerpt: "Coming out." The phrase alone may influence feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, pride, doubt, or excitement. When You're Ready: Coming Out explains why coming out is such a significant aspect of living life as an LGBTQ person and how to make the experience positive and right for you. This book includes practical information and insight from leading national organizations that provide support, services, and advocacy for LGBTQ youth, including the Human Rights Campaign, PFLAG, GLAAD, and The Trevor Project. You will learn helpful new terms, meet people who likely share very similar experiences, and gain answers on coming out selectively at home, school, work, and elsewhere. Most importantly, you will know definitively that you are not alone. Across the world, millions of people identify as LGBTQ, and most of them started just as you are now: reading a book or other material to help them better understand themselves and explore how to share their sexual orientation and/or gender identity with loved ones, friends, and acquaintances so they could be accepted just as they are.

Book excerpt: “With the words, ‘… there is no such thing as those people. There is only us,’ Jerry Troyer welcomes everyone who has struggled, and really everyone who reads this book, to truly love and take care of themselves.” —Anthony Bidulka, Lambda Award-winning novelist and author of the Russell Quant detective series Have you ever wondered why? Why can you lose weight, but not keep it off? Why can’t you seem to stay clean and sober? Why do your relationships all end the same way—badly? Why do you keep buying things that wind up not making you happy? The cause of self-defeating behaviors can often be shame—from our sexual orientation; an event we’ve experienced, such as getting pregnant before marria≥ a messy divorce; a job loss; or being abused as a child. Frequently, it has to do with what somebody told us when we were growing up, and we accepted whatever it was they said as our truth. But where did we get the idea that it is wrong to be gay? Who said we had to get married before having a baby? Whose rule is it that we should be ashamed if a marriage doesn’t last forever? Aren’t you tired of being on the roller coaster of fat and thin, clean and using? Coming Out to Ourselves: Admitting, Accepting, and Embracing Who We Truly Are invites you to go on a journey into your heart, where you can heal, forgive, and truly come out to yourself. Gay or straight, male or female, religious or agnostic, many of us carry guilt, shame, and fear that someone will find out our deepest and darkest secrets. Our secrets can often make us physically ill, in lack and struggle, going from one hurtful and unloving relationship to another, and separated from our heart center. Regardless of what it is that’s causing us to feel guilty, ashamed, or afraid, if it’s keeping us out of peace, there has never been a better time than right now to look at it, forgive it, and release it. This can be the most important journey you will ever take. www.revjerry.com

Book excerpt: A cautionary account of climate change and the global water supply. “You will not turn on the tap in the same way after reading this book.” —Robert Redford In a book hailed by Publishers Weekly as a “passionate plea for access-to-water activism,” Blue Covenant addresses an environmental crisis that—together with global warming—poses one of the gravest threats to our survival. How did the world’s most vital resource become imperiled? And what must we do to pull back from the brink? In “stark and nearly devastating prose”, world-renowned activist and bestselling author Maude Barlow—who is featured in the acclaimed documentary Flow—discusses the state of the world’s water. Barlow examines how water companies are reaping vast profits from declining supplies, and how ordinary people from around the world have banded together to reclaim the public’s right to clean water, creating a grassroots global water justice movement. While tracing the history of international battles for the right to water, she documents the life-and-death stakes involved in the fight and lays out the actions that we as global citizens must take to secure a water-just world for all (Booklist). “Sounds the water alarm with conviction and authority.” —Kirkus Reviews “This book proves that water deserves another destiny.” —Eduardo Galeano “Blue Covenant will inspire civil society movements around the world.” —Vandana Shiva

Book excerpt: Fundamentalists often position homosexuality to be something that a person ?falls into? after straying from the ?good Christian path,? but what happens when a homosexual awakening is part of that path? Jen Austin takes us on a journey of self-discovery that addresses many of the familiar issues that plague the coming out process, and shows why it?s a good thing that the path to wholeness in God isn?t always a straight one. Brokenness that stems from homophobia, judgment, and other outside factors can be effectively overcome with faith, and the healing that rises out of that provides a freedom that no right-wing, anti-gay rhetoric can ever take away.

He is under the label of 'homosexual'. He speaks straight from the heart with an aim to share with everyone the torment and anguish that he undergoes everyday and that every homosexual in the country and elsewhere undergoes. The closeted gays want to come out. But that won't be possible as long as a highly homophobic society keeps the closet door firmly shut on the face of some 30 million gay and lesbian people of the nation. He hopes that his Scribblings will give other homosexuals the courage to face life and help the 'normal' people accept an alternate lifestyle.

Book excerpt: Tracing the interactions among evangelicals, Catholics, and Mormons from the 1950s to the present day, We Gather Together recasts the story of the emergence of the Religious Right, showing that it was not a brilliant political strategy of compromise and coalition-building hatched on the eve of a history-altering election. Rather, it was the latest iteration of a much-longer religious debate that had been going on for decades. Evangelicals, Catholics, and Mormons found common cause and pursued similar ends in debates about abortion, school prayer, the Equal Rights Amendment, and tax exemptions for religious schools, but they were far from a unified bloc, cracks in the alliance shaped the movement from the very beginning. This provocative book will reshape our understanding of the most important religious and political movement of the last 30 years.
