Book excerpt: Boudoir has emerged from being a trend to being firmly established in the photographic mainstream. Its roots lie with many modern brides' desire to give a special, intimate album to their intended, but has snowballed with more and more women commissioning photographers (or photography enthusiast partners) to create personal portrait shots. Unlike glamour photography, boudoir is driven by the model's own concept and vision, and this book provides anyone who wants to explore their creative side with a complete guide to every aspect of the craft, from calming your model's stage fright to post-producing for that magazine look. This is a complete reference guide, with poses to suit all body types, arming photographers of any experience level with all they need to get visually arresting, and very flattering, results every time.

Download or read book Dandyism written by Len Gutkin and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "dandy," a nineteenth-century character and concept exemplified in such works as Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, reverberates in surprising corners of twentieth- and twenty-first-century culture. Establishing this character as a kind of shorthand for a diverse range of traits and tendencies, including gentlemanliness, rebelliousness, androgyny, aristocratic pretension, theatricality, and extravagance, Len Gutkin traces Victorian aesthetic precedents in the work of the modernist avant-garde, the noir novel, Beatnik experimentalism, and the postmodern thriller. As defined in the period between the fin de siècle and modernism, dandyism was inextricable from representations of queerness. But, rinsed of its suspect associations with the effeminate, dandyism would exert influence over such macho authors as Hemingway and Chandler, who harnessed its decadent energy. Dandyism, Gutkin argues, is a species of gendered charisma. The performative masquerade of Wilde’s decadent dandy is an ancestor to both the gender performance at work in American cowboy lore and the precious self-presentation of twenty-first-century hipsters. We cannot understand modernism and postmodernism’s negotiation of gender, aesthetic abstraction, or the culture of celebrity without the dandy. Analyzing the characteristic focus on costume, consumption, and the well-turned phrase in readings of figures ranging from Wyndham Lewis, Djuna Barnes, and William Burroughs to Patricia Highsmith, Bret Easton Ellis, and Ben Lerner, Dandyism reveals the Victorian dandy’s legacy across the twentieth century, providing a revisionist history of the relationship between Victorian aesthetics and twentieth-century literature.

Book excerpt: Clad in black velvet and posing as a widowed French comtesse, Gabrielle de Beaucaire had returned to England for one purpose only - to ruin the man responsible for her young lover's death. But convincing the forbidding Nathaniel Praed, England's greatest spy master, that she would make the perfect agent for his secret service would not be easy. And even after Gabrielle had lured the devastatingly attractive lord to her bed, she would have to contend with his distrust - and with the unexpected hunger that his merest touch aroused. From the moment he met her, Nathaniel Praed knew that the alluring Gabrielle de Beaucaire spelled trouble. But though he fought her outrageously bold advances, he could not stem the turbulent hunger that swept through him when the tall, titian-haired vixen pressed her lips to his. Now, against his better judgement, she is in his employ. And as Europe trembles at a tyrant's war and sinister minds plot against them, Nathaniel and Gabrielle fing themselves at the mercy of an exquisite passion and a love that could save - or destroy - both their lives.

Book Synopsis The Columbia Anthology of Yuan Drama by : C. T. Hsia
Download or read book The Columbia Anthology of Yuan Drama written by C. T. Hsia and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology features translations of ten seminal plays written during the Yuan dynasty (1279Ð1368), a period considered the golden age of Chinese theater. By turns lyrical and earthy, sentimental and ironic, Yuan drama spans a broad emotional, linguistic, and stylistic range. Combining sung arias with declaimed verses and doggerels, dialogues and mime, and jokes and acrobatic feats, Yuan drama formed a vital part of ChinaÕs culture of performance and entertainment in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. To date, few Yuan-dynasty plays have been translated into English. Well-known translators and scholars have supervised the making of this collection and add a short description to each play. A general introduction situates all selections within their cultural and historical contexts.
