Book excerpt: The investigations of the extinguishing by depressurization resulted in a period of low gas temperature after the stop of the steady state flame and before the redevelopment of a second flame. By comparison of the depressurization rate and the time intervals for a 50% pressure decay, the continued gasification of the propellant could be measured. Surface structure analysis by Scanning Electron Microscope enabled the determination of the oxidizer/binder area ration on the extinguished surface, furthermore the burning of local spots to about 0.1 mm propellant thickness during the phase of extinguishing. The measurements included 16 different propellant mixtures at pressure levels of 25 bar, 45 bar, and 95 bar.

Book excerpt: Apparatus required to investigate the depressurization extinguishment behavior of solid propellants was constructed and a series of tests was conducted using a number of AP propellant compositions at several pressure levels. The results define more clearly the effects of these parameters on the dynamic behavior of the flame. A summary of the findings plus a detailed description of the apparatus and procedures used is given in the report. (Author).

Book excerpt: Ammonium perchlorate's burning rate as a function of pressure has an exponent break around 4000 psi where the pressure exponent becomes greater than 1. This causes AP to be highly sensitive to pressure fluctuations that can damage or destroy ammonium perchlorate composite propellant-based solid rocket motors. Studies conducted on AP at these high pressure are few and there is a lack of direct qualitative data due to the challenges posed by the high-pressure environment and optical window structural limitations. This has left the cause exponent break mechanism unknown and difficult to study. The High-Pressure Combustion Lab has built an Ultra-High Pressure Optical Chamber (UHPOC) that allows for optical measurements at these higher pressure regimes. Testing visual measurement techniques using the UHPOC and a telescope zoom lens to take detailed images of the propellant surface during the burn was conducted. Non-aluminized propellant and aluminized propellant samples were tested to observe the mechanisms of aluminum particle combustion in a propellant at high pressures and the behavior of the propellant past the exponent break region. \par At atmospheric, detailed high-speed images on the propellant surface were obtained using a high-powered lamp to light the surface brighter than the flame. At higher pressures, however, the luminosity of the flame was significantly greater than the lamp, creating shadow images of the propellant. Binder agglomerates were observed coming off the surface which increased in size and magnitude as the pressure increased. This is attributed to AP decomposition becoming the dominant burning rate mechanism which burned faster than the surrounding binder as has been observed from previous studies and numerical models. This leaves the binder only partially pyrolyzed, forming the agglomerates which detached from the surface. Aluminum particles were found to ignite at all pressures with the binder agglomerating the same amount in both aluminized and non-aluminized samples. Atmospheric tests show aluminum particles with detached flames and high-pressure tests show aluminum particles with surface flames.

Book excerpt: In order to explore the limits of validity of the granular diffusion flame theory of solid propellant combustion in the limiting low pressure regime, a systematic study of burning rates and particle size effects has been conducted at subatmospheric pressures. In addition, flame extinction phenomena were explored and flame photographs and chemical analysis of reaction residues were carried out. In connection with the extinction study, a new regime of combustion was discovered for certain polysulfide composite propellants containing fine oxidizer particles. When the flames of these propellants are visibly extinguished by reducing the environmental pressure, a combustion wave continues to propagate through the propellant with the formation of an ash. There are at least two possibilities for interpreting this flameless regression. The first interpretation is that it is evidence of an oxidation reaction taking place at the solid surface or inside the thermal wave. The second interpretation is that the combustion wave in an AP propellant propagates simply as the result of exothermic pyrolysis of the AP without additional heat from subsurface or surface oxidation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the research is to establish the processes in solid propellant combustion that control steady and nonsteady combustion rate (composite propellants). The practical goal is to: 1. Tailor burning rate by variation of formulation (oxidizer particle size, ballistic modifiers, and choice of binders). This includes learning what processes lead to low or negative sensitivity of burning rate to pressure increase (plateau and mesa burning). 2. Determine steps in the combustion process that are most responsive to oscillatory flows (combustion instability). 3. Evaluate the combustion characteristics of new oxidizer and binder ingredients, and of propellants that include new ingredients (and compare results with those of AP oxidizer and Ap/hydrocarbon binder propellants). 4. Develop a realistic qualitative model of the combustion process that would identify the requirements for formulation of realistic analytical models.

Book excerpt: The overall objective of the current research is to achieve a basic understanding of the erosive burning mechanism in solid-propellant rocket motors. Both theoretical and experimental studies are undertaken. In the theoretical modeling, a reactive turbulent boundary-layer approach is used to analyze the erosive burning phenomenon. A second-order turbulent closure has been selected in the theoretical formulation. The theoretical model can be used to study the effect of gas velocity, pressure, streamwise pressure gradient, oxidizer particle size, and oxidizer-to-fuel ratio. For model validation, a test rig has been designed to establish a two-dimensional, turbulent boundary layer flow over a flat plate. The test rig can operate under various gas-dynamic conditions. A laser-photodiode servomechanism has been developed to measure the burning rate, and preliminary tests have demonstrated successful operation of the apparatus. (Author).

Book excerpt: A microwave continuous measurement technique has been used to measure burning rates of a carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene and ammonium perchlorate composite solid propellant during rapid decompression. A microwave signal oscillating at a known source frequency is passed through the end of a burning propellant strand opposite the burning surface and allowed to reflect off the burning surface. By continuously comparing the phase angle of this reflected signal with the phase angle of another signal oscillating at the orginal source frequency, a relative phase angle of another signal oscillating at the original source frequency, a relative phase angle between the two signals is obtained. The rate of change of this relative phase angle with time is proportional to the propellant's burning rate. Possible errors were investigated and conclusions reached concerning them. (Author).
