Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millets and sorghum are extremely important crops in many developing nations and because of the ability of many of them to thrive in low-moisture situations they represent some exciting opportunities for further development to address the continuing and increasing impact of global temperature increase on the sustainability of the world’s food crops. The main focus of this thorough new book is the potential for crop improvement through new and traditional methods, with the book’s main chapters covering the following crops: sorghum, pearl millet, finger millet, foxtail milet, proso millet, little millet, barnyard millet, kodo millet, tef and fonio. Further chapters cover pests and diseases, nutritional and industrial importance, novel tools for improvement, and seed systems in millets. Millets and Sorghum provides full and comprehensive coverage of these crucially important crops, their biology, world status and potential for improvement, and is an essential purchase for crop and plant scientists, and food scientists and technologists throughout the developed and developing world. All libraries in universities and research establishment where biological and agricultural sciences are studied and taught should have copies of this important book on their shelves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are no longer able to provide the world population with a healthy diet and, at the same time, sustainably balance our planetary resources to ensure resilient and viable livelihoods for smallholder farmers. For the past fifty years, diets have become less nutritionally balanced, contribute significantly to climate change, and have accelerated the process of biodiversity erosion. We have reduced the number of species that are cultivated for food, and for each species, we are growing fewer varieties. While agriculture has moved towards uniformity, biodiversity is the basis of healthy and nutritious diets, and biodiversity is paramount for adapting crops to climate change. Hence, it is important to build resilient and sustainable food systems by re-introducing diversity into our agricultural systems and introducing “Smart Food” from smart crops into our diets. Smart Food is food that fulfills the criteria for being good for you (nutritious and healthy), good for the planet (environmentally sustainable); and beneficial to the farmers who grow these crops (resilient and viable). The aim of this Research Topic is to provide researchers, research managers, funding agencies, and government agencies with scientifically backed information to foster awareness, increased use, and support for research into Smart Food.

This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to its adaptation to extremely harsh environments, pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L) R. Br.) is one of the most important staple cereals cultivated in the arid and semi-arid tropics of Asia and Africa. In these regions pearl millet is mainly produced under low-input, rainfed conditions in traditional farming systems, where several constrains are affecting pearl millet production, such as inter-annual rainfall variability, pests, diseases, Striga and use of low yielding varieties. The majority of the human population in these regions is affected by nutritional deficiencies of essential minerals causing micronutrient malnutrition (so-called ‘hidden hunger’). Plant genetic resources provide basic materials for selection and improvement of crop productivity through the optimal design of breeding programs to meet food security needs of the world’s rapidly rising population. The advent of PCR-based molecular markers such as simple sequence repeats (SSRs) has created an opportunity for fine-scale genetic characterization of germplasm collections. Understanding the structure of diversity and the identification of distinct materials with complementary traits for recombination by crossing provides the foundation for effective and sustained pearl millet population breeding and synthetic and hybrid development, based on the concept of heterotic groups in this allogamous crop.

Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed overview and critical evaluation of recent advances and remaining challenges in improving nutritional quality and/or avoiding the accumulation of undesirable substances in plants using a variety of strategies based on modern biological tools and techniques. Each review chapter provides an authoritative and insightful account of the various aspects of nutritional enhancement of plants. In the course of the last two decades, several food crops rich in macro- and micronutrients have been developed to improve health and protect a large section of the populace in developing countries from chronic diseases. Providing extensive information on these developments, this book offers a valuable resource for all researchers, students and industrialists working in agriculture, the plant sciences, agronomy, horticulture, biotechnology, food and nutrition, and the soil and environmental sciences.
