Book excerpt: This open access book covers a century of research on wheat genetics and evolution, starting with the discovery in 1918 of the accurate number of chromosomes in wheat. We re-evaluate classical studies that are pillars of the current knowledge considering recent genomic data in the wheat group comprising 31 species from the genera Amblyopyrum, Aegilops, Triticum, and other more distant relatives. For these species, we describe morphology, ecogeographical distribution, phylogeny as well as cytogenetic and genomic features. For crops, we also address evolution under human selection, namely pre-domestication cultivation and domestication. We re-examine the genetic and archeological evidence of where, when, and how domestication occurred. We discuss unique aspects of genome evolution and maintenance under polyploidization, in natural and synthetic allopolyploids of the wheat group. Finally, we propose some thoughts on the future prospects of wheat improvement. As such, it can be of great interest to wheat researchers and breeders as well as to plant scientists and students interested in plant genetics, evolution, domestication, and polyploidy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven winter wheats were evaluated for plant height, the components of yield and yield in a diallel cross at Pendleton, Oregon and Lind, Washington. An additional parent was added to the diallel cross at Pullman, Washington. Two levels of nitrogen and five replications were utilized at each of the locations. Ten seeds of each F1 or parent were blended with 200 seeds of WA 4303 and seeded in a ten foot row. This was done in order to simulate a solid seeding with the limited amount of F1 seed. The data were analyzed by using Griffing's diallel analysis, Method 4, Model 1. The morphological traits measured were: heading date, kernels per spike, spikelets per spike, kernels per spikelet, weight per 1000 kernels, kernels per plant, spikes per plant and yield per plant. In an effort to obtain an unbiased combining ability estimate, a blend method of seeding (F1's mixed with a short semidwarf WA 4303) was used in order to simulate solid seedings. A comparison between the solid and blend seedings indicated, however, that WA 4303 did not exert the same influence on all hybrids. The estimate obtained should be less bias than those results obtained from other investigations where space or hill plantings were utilized. Significant general combining ability estimates were associated with all measured traits within the six environments, except for kernels per plant (high fertility) at one location. Specific combining ability estimates were significant for all traits at one location. Only part of the measured traits exhibited significant specific combining ability effects at the other two locations. Under the environments where specific combining ability estimates were significant they were larger than those for general combining ability for most traits. The lines utilized in this study were previously selected on the basis of their yielding ability. Therefore, the additive portion of the total genetic variance had already been maximized. The high specific combining ability estimates were attributed to this previous selection for additive gene action in addition to the nonadditive gene action which resulted from crossing of the selected lines. Heterosis and heterobeltiosis were exhibited by some hybrids for all measured traits and within all six environments. Heterosis and specific combining ability estimates were not always in close agreement which could result in some confusion in determining which crosses would perform best in a specific environment. These data would indicate that specific combining ability is a valid estimate of the total amount of nonadditive genetic variance present but in addition the additive genetic variance and the multiplicative action of the components are important and contribute to heterosis. The influence of the environmental-genotypic interaction as measured across locations was greater for specific combining ability estimates than that for the estimates of general combining ability for all traits measured. This suggests that the nonadditive genetic variance is more susceptible to changes in environmental conditions than is the additive portion of the total genetic variance.

Book excerpt: A major factor limiting the efficiency of plant improvement programs is the lack of knowledge as to which parental combinations to make when working with quantitatively inherited traits. The primary objective of this study was to provide information regarding the use of combining ability analysis to predict which cross combinations would result in the greater frequency of desirable segregates. Five winter wheat parents were used to develop a 5x5 diallel cross. Over a two year period parents, Fl, F2, F3, and F4 generations involving top cross populations were evaluated. Information was collected on an individual plant basis for seven traits: plant height, tiller number, spike length, spikelets per spike, biological yield, grain yield, and harvest index. Griffing's (1956) model 1, method 2 was used to estimate GCA and SCA in Fl and later generations. Narrow-sense heritability estimates were computed using regression in standard units across generations. Significant GCA estimates were obtained for most traits in all generations with the exception of tiller number and grain yield in the Fl during 1986-87. Specific combining ability estimates were also found to be important for all traits, except spikelets per spike in the Fl and F3 generations. High GCA to SCA ratios indicated a preponderance of additive gene action. Exceptions to the trend were grain yield and tiller number in the Fl during 1986-87. Low GCA and narrow-sense heritability estimates suggest that selection for these two traits would have to be delayed until later generations. When considered over generations, both GCA and SCA estimates were found to be significant. Significant SCA over generations indicated the presence of additive x additive epistasis. The GCA effects contributed by a particular parent were consistent over all generations indicating that F2 and F3 generations can be used effectively for combining ability analysis. However, the results did suggest that GCA estimates were more influenced by the environment than SCA. For the traits measured and in the populations used in this study, GCA effects did predict the best parental combinations for obtaining the highest percentage of desirable progeny in segregating populations.

Book excerpt: “Diagnostics in Plant Breeding” is systematically organizing cutting-edge research reviews on the development and application of molecular tools for the prediction of plant performance. Given its significance for mankind and the available research resources, medical sciences are leading the area of molecular diagnostics, where DNA-based risk assessments for various diseases and biomarkers to determine their onset become increasingly available. So far, most research in plant genomics has been directed towards understanding the molecular basis of biological processes or phenotypic traits. From a plant breeding perspective, however, the main interest is in predicting optimal genotypes based on molecular information for more time- and cost-efficient breeding schemes. It is anticipated that progress in plant genomics and in particular sequence technology made recently will shift the focus from “explanatory” to “predictive” in crop science. This book assembles chapters on all areas relevant to development and application of predictive molecular tools in plant breeding by leading authorties in the respective areas.

A lot of research work is going on to develop high yielding wheat varieties.Line×tester analysis is one of efficient breeding strategies to evaluate combining ability effects of genotypes and also to provide information regarding genetic mechanisms controlling yield and yield related traits.Combining ability analysis would be of great help to identify the most suitable and desirable parental material to breed further to get the hybrids which have the desirable characters for the breeders. The line x tester cross experiment in spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was used to estimate the combining ability effects involved in the control and expression of some polygenic traits of economic importance. This book provide information regarding wheat and its yield related traits to improve the yield.
