Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes intelligible the wide range of electricity generating technologies available today, as well as some closely allied technologies such as energy storage. The book opens by setting the many power generation technologies in the context of global energy consumption, the development of the electricity generation industry and the economics involved in this sector. A series of chapters are each devoted to assessing the environmental and economic impact of a single technology, including conventional technologies, nuclear and renewable (such as solar, wind and hydropower). The technologies are presented in an easily digestible form.Different power generation technologies have different greenhouse gas emissions and the link between greenhouse gases and global warming is a highly topical environmental and political issue. With developed nations worldwide looking to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide, it is becoming increasingly important to explore the effectiveness of a mix of energy generation technologies.Power Generation Technologies gives a clear, unbiased review and comparison of the different types of power generation technologies available. In the light of the Kyoto protocol and OSPAR updates, Power Generation Technologies will provide an invaluable reference text for power generation planners, facility managers, consultants, policy makers and economists, as well as students and lecturers of related Engineering courses. · Provides a unique comparison of a wide range of power generation technologies - conventional, nuclear and renewable· Describes the workings and environmental impact of each technology· Evaluates the economic viability of each different power generation system

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electricity, which has largely supplanted oil as the most controversial energy issue of the 1980s, is at the center of some of the world's bitterest economic and environmental controversies. Soaring costs, high interest rates, and environmental damage caused by large power plants have wreaked havoc on the once booming electricity industry. Although policymakers around the world disagree vigorously about future trends and appropriate policies, virtually all acknowledge that a turning point has been reached. This document discusses: (1) past practices and trends leading to problems related to electric power generation and the electrical industry in the United States and foreign countries (including developing nations); (2) innovations and advances in the electrical industry related to the growth of electricity; (3) the rush to small-scale energy production and cogeneration (the combined production of heat and power), led not by utilities but by large industrial companies building their own power systems and small firms created to tap new energy sources such as wind power and geothermal energy; (4) the role of energy efficient products and practices as a power source; and (5) electricity's future. Book excerpt: Problem Definition: Combined heat and power (CHP) plants generate electricity and useful heat at the same time, reaching high efficiencies. There are many benefits to utilities of having CHP plants in their portfolio, including increasing power reliability, reducing transmission losses, and meeting environmental regulations. Despite these benefits, only 3% of all CHP capacity in the U.S. is utility owned. We study the economics of utility ownership of CHP plants and examine the impact of regulatory policies on such investments.Academic/Practical Relevance: There is little research on the economics of utility ownership of CHP. Given the low CHP adoption rate in the U.S., particularly by utilities, it is of general interest to understand the economics of CHP and how policies affect CHP adoption.Methodology: We solve for the optimal form of investment and dispatch decisions using analytic economic modeling. Following this, we present a numerical study calibrated with real data from three different utilities in the U.S., including their existing generation portfolio, uncertainties in demand and fuel prices, granular renewable intermittency, and grid reliability. Results: A utility's investment in different generating technologies follows an Invest/Stay Put/Disinvest (ISD) policy for a given siting decision of CHP plants. Numerically, we find investment in many CHP plants to be attractive to utilities, even without regulatory policy intervention. A low to moderate emissions tax makes CHP even more attractive for utilities.Managerial Implications: There is significant interest in energy sustainability in the industrial and academic communities. We shed light on a technology that is well known to practitioners but less explored in academia and demonstrate its benefits rigorously. We show that utilities should seriously consider adopting CHP in their generation portfolios, and our model framework can aid such decisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electric power industry is undergoing the greatest transformation in its 100-year history. In readable, concise fashion, author Denise Warkentin explains how the electric industry works and what changes are in store. After briefly tracing the history of the industry, she details how different segments are structured and work together. Investor-owned, consumer-owned, and government-owned utilities are explained, as are rural cooperatives and independent power producers. Other issues addressed include deregulation, the emergence of energy marketers, and the impact of ongoing mergers, acquisitions, and consolidations.

Book excerpt: Power systems must be actively managed to maintain a steady balance between supply and demand. This is already a complex task as demand varies continually. But what happens when supply becomes more variable and less certain, as with some renewable sources of electricity like wind and solar PV that fluctuate with the weather? to what extent can the resources that help power systems cope with the challenge of variability in demand also be applied to variability of supply? How large are these resources? and what share of electricity supply from variable renewables can they make possible? There is no one-size-fits-all answer. the ways electricity is produced, transported and consumed around the world exhibit great diversity. Grids can cross borders, requiring co-ordinated international policy, or can be distinct within a single country or region. and whether found in dispatchable power plants, storage facilities, interconnections for trade or on the demand side, the flexible resource that ensures the provision of reliable power in the face of uncertainty likewise differs enormously. Written for decision makers, Harnessing Variable Renewables: a Guide to the Balancing Challenge sheds light on managing power systems with large shares of variable renewables. It presents a new, step-by-step approach developed by the IEA to assess the flexibility of power systems, which identifies the already present resources that could help meet the twin challenges of variability and uncertainty.
