Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of channel catfish farming in the United States serves as a model for the development of pond-based aquaculture industries worldwide. Channel catfish farming is the largest and economically most important aquaculture industry in the United States. In 2003, over 300,000 metric tons (662 million pounds) of channel catfish were processed, representing about half the total United States aquaculture production. Demand for farm-raised catfish is strong, with record processing years in 2002 and 2003. In 22 chapters written by active scientists in the field, Biology and Culture of Channel Catfish comprehensively synthesizes over 30 years of research on this American icon. Throughout the book, fundamental biological aspects of channel catfish are linked to practical culture techniques. Topics include: • Latest information on reproductive physiology, genetics, and breeding • Comprehensive treatment of catfish nutrition, feeds, and feeding practices • Water quality management and pond dynamics • In-depth review of immunology in channel catfish • Practical information on diseases and health management • Techniques for commercial culture, including innovative techniques such as raceways, recirculating systems, and partitioned aquaculture systems • Catfish economics and marketing • Exploration of environmental concerns, including recommended Best Management Practices

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-of-a-kind book for researchers interested in finfish nutrition Handbook of Nutrient Requirements of Finfish provides a summary of qualitative and quantitative nutrient requirements for almost all cultured finfish for which a significant amount of nutritional information now exists. Information is presented by species and includes how each species is cultured, an index of production, regional locations where each species is being cultured, examples of purified or test diets and special conditions required for laboratory studies, nutrient requirements and practical diet formulation. Discussions of special diets and feeding practices are included for certain species. This book will be a useful guide for students, researchers, practicing nutritionists, aquaculturists, and feed manufacturers interested in fish nutrition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph will put the biogenic marine lipids of many organisms in perspective. Up to 100 years ago, fish and shellfish were frequent and major components of our "western" diet. In search of progress and convenience, we have given up many such foods in favor of those produced by "agribusiness" interests. There are different viewpoints on the merits of the marine omage-3 fatty acids and of the terrestrial omega-6 fatty acids in human nutrition, and every individual may have different needs. This monograph should help researchers relate these basic building blocks of lipids in the fascinating world of marine organisms to our contemporary interest in human biochemistry, nutrition, and health.

Book excerpt: Presenting state-of-the-art research on the economics of producing and marketing aquacultural products, this volume addresses critical issues concerning profitability, market acceptance, and economic modeling of various aquacultural products. Research approaches range from firm-level bioeconomic modelling to market-level econometric modelling of industry growth and product substitution. The studies highlight the institutional structures and public policy issues that will shape growth and development of aquaculture into the twenty-first century, including trade policies, food safety, and environmental quality.

O'Neal and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of studies was conducted to determine the effects of different dietary lipid sources (menhaden oil, MO; catfish oil, CO; or beef tallow, BT) on fatty acid composition (neutral and polar), selected hematological parameters, and cold tolerance in channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus . Significant differences existed in the neutral fatty acid profile of fingerling channel catfish fed diets containing different dietary lipid sources over a 12-week feeding trial. Catfish fed the MO diet contained the highest concentrations of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid content (HUFA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The MO diet also increased concentrations of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and total unsaturation content in the polar lipids. Fish fed diets containing BT had significantly higher levels of stearic acid and oleic acid concentration than fish fed MO or CO diets. Exposure to a gradual decrease in water temperature increased monounsaturated fatty acid content within the neutral lipids of catfish fed BT and MO diets, whereas a rapid decrease in water temperature increased 18:4n-3, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and DHA in fish fed BT diets, but only DHA within fish fed the CO diet. For polar lipids, total monounsaturated fatty acids increased in fish fed BT and CO diets after exposure to a gradual decrease in water temperature. A rapid decrease in water temperature increased the concentrations of DHA and n-3 HUFAs within fish fed BT, CO, or MO diets. Manipulation of dietary lipids did not mitigate effects of the temperature stress subjected to the juvenile catfish. Results from a finishing diet study indicated no differences existed between MO and CO in terms of influencing n-3 HUFA content in the juvenile channel catfish fillet. Therefore, CO may be successfully substituted for MO in formulated diets without adversely affecting n-3 HUFA content in channel catfish. In addition, I found that channel catfish contain a putative delta-6 desaturase-like gene. However, future research is needed to determine the activity level of this gene and what dietary feed ingredients would maximize the activity level of the presumptive coded enzyme to produce a more marketable product for the channel catfish industry.
