Book excerpt: A Versatile Framework for Handling Subdivided Geometric Objects Combinatorial Maps: Efficient Data Structures for Computer Graphics and Image Processing gathers important ideas related to combinatorial maps and explains how the maps are applied in geometric modeling and image processing. It focuses on two subclasses of combinatorial maps: n-Gmaps and n-maps. Suitable for researchers and graduate students in geometric modeling, computational and discrete geometry, computer graphics, and image processing and analysis, the book presents the data structures, operations, and algorithms that are useful in handling subdivided geometric objects. It shows how to study data structures for the explicit representation of subdivided geometric objects and describes operations for handling the structures. The book also illustrates results of the design of data structures and operations.

Book excerpt: The action of a compact Lie group, G, on a compact sympletic manifold gives rise to some remarkable combinatorial invariants. The simplest and most interesting of these is the moment polytopes, a convex polyhedron which sits inside the dual of the Lie algebra of G. One of the main goals of this monograph is to describe what kinds of geometric information are encoded in this polytope. This book is addressed to researchers and can be used as a semester text.

This book was released on 1987-07-31 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational geometry as an area of research in its own right emerged in the early seventies of this century. Right from the beginning, it was obvious that strong connections of various kinds exist to questions studied in the considerably older field of combinatorial geometry. For example, the combinatorial structure of a geometric problem usually decides which algorithmic method solves the problem most efficiently. Furthermore, the analysis of an algorithm often requires a great deal of combinatorial knowledge. As it turns out, however, the connection between the two research areas commonly referred to as computa tional geometry and combinatorial geometry is not as lop-sided as it appears. Indeed, the interest in computational issues in geometry gives a new and con structive direction to the combinatorial study of geometry. It is the intention of this book to demonstrate that computational and com binatorial investigations in geometry are doomed to profit from each other. To reach this goal, I designed this book to consist of three parts, acorn binatorial part, a computational part, and one that presents applications of the results of the first two parts. The choice of the topics covered in this book was guided by my attempt to describe the most fundamental algorithms in computational geometry that have an interesting combinatorial structure. In this early stage geometric transforms played an important role as they reveal connections between seemingly unrelated problems and thus help to structure the field.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the 10th International Workshop on Combinatorial Image Analysis, held December 1–3, 2004, in Auckland, New Zealand. Prior meetings took place in Paris (France, 1991), Ube (Japan, 1992), Washington DC (USA, 1994), Lyon (France, 1995), Hiroshima (Japan, 1997), Madras (India, 1999), Caen (France, 2000), Philadelphia (USA, 2001), and - lermo (Italy, 2003). For this workshop we received 86 submitted papers from 23 countries. Each paper was evaluated by at least two independent referees. We selected 55 papers for the conference. Three invited lectures by Vladimir Kovalevsky (Berlin), Akira Nakamura (Hiroshima), and Maurice Nivat (Paris) completed the program. Conference papers are presented in this volume under the following topical part titles: discrete tomography (3 papers), combinatorics and computational models (6), combinatorial algorithms (6), combinatorial mathematics (4), d- ital topology (7), digital geometry (7), approximation of digital sets by curves and surfaces (5), algebraic approaches (5), fuzzy image analysis (2), image s- mentation (6), and matching and recognition (7). These subjects are dealt with in the context of digital image analysis or computer vision.

Book excerpt: This unique book provides the first introduction to crystal base theory from the combinatorial point of view. Crystal base theory was developed by Kashiwara and Lusztig from the perspective of quantum groups. Its power comes from the fact that it addresses many questions in representation theory and mathematical physics by combinatorial means. This book approaches the subject directly from combinatorics, building crystals through local axioms (based on ideas by Stembridge) and virtual crystals. It also emphasizes parallels between the representation theory of the symmetric and general linear groups and phenomena in combinatorics. The combinatorial approach is linked to representation theory through the analysis of Demazure crystals. The relationship of crystals to tropical geometry is also explained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many vision problems have to deal with di?erent entities (regions, lines, line junctions, etc.) and their relationships. These entities together with their re- tionships may be encoded using graphs or hypergraphs. The structural inf- mation encoded by graphs allows computer vision algorithms to address both the features of the di?erent entities and the structural or topological relati- ships between them. Moreover, turning a computer vision problem into a graph problem allows one to access the full arsenal of graph algorithms developed in computer science. The Technical Committee (TC15, http://www.iapr.org/tcs.html) of the IAPR (International Association for Pattern Recognition) has been funded in order to federate and to encourage research work in these ?elds. Among its - tivities, TC15 encourages the organization of special graph sessions at many computer vision conferences and organizes the biennial workshop GbR. While being designed within a speci?c framework, the graph algorithms developed for computer vision and pattern recognition tasks often share constraints and goals with those developed in other research ?elds such as data mining, robotics and discrete geometry. The TC15 community is thus not closed in its research ?elds but on the contrary is open to interchanges with other groups/communities.

Book excerpt: Graph Theory is a part of discrete mathematics characterized by the fact of an extremely rapid development during the last 10 years. The number of graph theoretical paper as well as the number of graph theorists increase very strongly. The main purpose of this book is to show the reader the variety of graph theoretical methods and the relation to combinatorics and to give him a survey on a lot of new results, special methods, and interesting informations. This book, which grew out of contributions given by about 130 authors in honour to the 70th birthday of Gerhard Ringel, one of the pioneers in graph theory, is meant to serve as a source of open problems, reference and guide to the extensive literature and as stimulant to further research on graph theory and combinatorics.

Book excerpt: In addition of proposing a model of language based on a bio-mathematical reduction within a synthesis between deduction, induction it suggests a much more important role of learning symmetry (especially iconicity) parallel to Universal Grammar. Without any theoretical megalomania, the model you will be discovering, reading and hopefully discussing hypothesizes two propositional principles with an important role of thermodynamic information : the shift from the bio-semiotic to the semiotic order along with the neural/dynamic mapping is embedded in the shift from thermodynamic laws without proposition (methodologically defined by hypothetic-probabilistic states of the ''internal observer'', Boltzmann-Bernoulli proposals and quantization) to biological and cultural consciousness (selection, combination, self-reference and symmetry etc etc)
