Book excerpt: In Military Communications: A Test for Technology, John D. Bergen develops the thesis that burgeoning technology in communications faced a severe test in Vietnam. He analyzes the advantages and drawbacks of new communications systems and the effects these systems had on decision making and on command. In doing so, he describes the difficulties that communications systems had in keeping pace with the information explosion and shows that command and control do not necessarily improve with enhanced communications. The book illustrates that the communications missions of getting the message through was not only critical to the success of combat operations, but also as challenging as combat itself. Bergens clear understanding and description of these issues make this a valuable work for those responsible for the future success of command, control, communications, and intelligence.

Book excerpt: Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Manual (FM) 6-02, Signal Support to Operations, is the premier Signal doctrine publication, and only field manual. FM 6-02 compiles Signal Corps doctrine into three chapters with supporting appendices that address network operations in support of mission command and unified land operations and the specific tactics and procedures associated with organic and nonorganic Signal forces. The fundamental idea of Signal Corps tactics is the employment and ordered arrangement of Signal forces in a supporting role to provide LandWarNet across the range of military operations. The detailed techniques regarding the ways and methods to accomplish the missions, functions or tasks of the Signal Corps indicated in this FM will be addressed in supporting Army techniques publications (ATPs). Army forces operate worldwide and require a secure and reliable communications capability that rapidly adapts to changing demands.

Book excerpt: From the Preface: With this volume, third and last in the Signal Corps subseries, the authors close the book on the history of the Corps in World War II. They close it to the extent that they hereby complete the account as published in the UNITED STATES ARMY IN WORLD WAR II histories. But they hope that this volume, subtitled The Outcome, together with its predecessors, The Emergency, to Pearl Harbor Day, and The Test, to mid-1943, may open up to the military specialist, and to the general reader as well, new vistas of significance in the immense and complex scene of signal communications and electronics in World War II. The Signal Corps: The Outcome, continuing the chronological treatment generally followed throughout this subseries, depicts the entire activity of the Corps at home and overseas to V-J Day. The volume is in all respects a sequel to The Signal Corps: The Test, wherein the authors had carried the story to mid-1943. At that point in time, the Signal Corps' struggle to obtain better control over communications throughout the Army had reached a crisis in the Washington headquarters. Or rather the Corps was just subsiding, not altogether happily, from that crisis, by 1 July 1943. In the field, in North Africa, the Signal Corps had just passed its first great combat test of the war.

Book excerpt: Among the plethora of lessons learned out of Desert Shield/Desert Storm, those linked to command, control, and communications (C3) offer valuable insights into what does and does not work at the Corps level in the preparation for and application of Airland Operations. The scale of joint and combined operations, coupled with the unique expanse of a desert theater of operations, provided a special C3 challenge to Commanders at every level. The author will apply his gulf war experiences to analyze that C3 challenge from the perspective of the VII Corps Tactical Command Post (TAC), operating with a five Division- sized force and a large supporting combat, combat support/combat service support task organization. Starting with the environmental impact on a European-based Corps Headquarters faced with desert theater conditions, the study will focus on planning, preparation, and execution of TAC C3 functions in this Major Regional Conflict (MRC). Organizations, manning, training, and equipping of the TAC will be analyzed relative to the METT-T conditions of the theater campaign. Desert Shield, Desert Storm (both air and ground campaigns), and post-combat TAC functions will be addressed. While cutting across all seven Battlefield Operating Systems (BOS), the study will remain centered on C3 at the Corps TAC.

Book excerpt: This manual provides guidance for the organization, planning, and conduct of the full range of military operations on urbanized terrain. This publication was prepared primarily for commanders, staffs, and subordinate leaders down to the squad and fire team level. It is written from a Marine air-ground task force perspective, with emphasis on the ground combat element as the most likely supported element in that environment. It provides the level of detailed information that supports the complexities of planning, preparing for, and executing small-unit combat operations on urbanized terrain. It also provides historical and environmental information that supports planning and training for combat in built-up areas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid progress in information and communications technologies is dramatically enhancing the strategic role of information, positioning effective exploitation of these technology advances as a critical success factor in military affairs. These technology advances are drivers and enablers for the "nervous system" of the militaryâ€"its command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) systemsâ€"to more effectively use the "muscle" side of the military. Authored by a committee of experts drawn equally from the military and commercial sectors, Realizing the Potential of C4I identifies three major areas as fundamental challenges to the full Department of Defense (DOD) exploitation of C4I technologyâ€"information systems security, interoperability, and various aspects of DOD process and culture. The book details principles by which to assess DOD efforts in these areas over the long term and provides specific, more immediately actionable recommendations. Although DOD is the focus of this book, the principles and issues presented are also relevant to interoperability, architecture, and security challenges faced by government as a whole and by large, complex public and private enterprises across the economy.
