Book Synopsis Colour Terminology in Modern Irish by : Mark Ó Fionnáin
Download or read book Colour Terminology in Modern Irish written by Mark Ó Fionnáin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-06-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work looks at basic colour terms in Modern Irish by presenting the historical development of these terms since their earliest attestation and in comparison with the other Gaelic languages, namely, Scottish Gaelic and Manx. These terms are analysed based on lexicographical and didactic material, as well as their use in placenames and proverbs, resources with great potential but which have been underused in colour terminology research in general. Its conclusion is the presentation of fieldwork results with native speakers from all major Irish dialects based on their responses to the colours of items in pictures, research which has never been previously conducted, to see whether their use of colour terminology matches that as presented, and to comment on the current state of Irish basic colour terminology.

Book Synopsis Progress in Colour Studies by : Carole P. Biggam
Download or read book Progress in Colour Studies written by Carole P. Biggam and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with its companion volume, this book offers a fascinating glimpse into the current avenues of research into colour, a phenomenon which daily affects all our lives in often surprising ways. The majority of the papers originated in a 2004 conference entitled ‘Progress in Colour Studies’ which was held in the University of Glasgow, U.K. The contributions to this first volume, which is principally linguistic and anthropological in content, and to its companion on the psychological aspects of colour, present either summaries of state-of-the-art colour research in various disciplines, or in-depth accounts of certain aspects of such work. This volume includes approaches such as Natural Semantic Metalanguage, social network analysis, quantitative analysis, type modification, vantage theory, the centrality of social norms of inference, place-names and heraldry. In the process, new insights are offered into the following languages: English, French, Portuguese, Sorbian, Burarra, Cape Breton Gaelic, Tzotzil, and others.

Book excerpt: A timely, intriguing collection of the overlooked stories of Victoria’s pioneers, trailblazers, and community builders who were also diverse people of colour. Often described as “more English than the English,” the city of Victoria has a much more ethnically diverse background than historical record and current literature reveal. Significant contributions were made by many people of colour with fascinating stories, including: the Kanaka, or Hawaiian Islanders, who constructed Fort Victoria, and members of the Kanaka community such as Maria Mahoi and William Naukana three Metis matriarchs—Amelia Connolly Douglas, Josette Legacé Work, and Isabelle M. Mainville Ross the Victoria Voltigeurs, the earliest police presence in the Colony of Vancouver Island, and who were primarily men of colour Grafton Tyler Brown, now known in the United States as one of the first and best African American artists of the American West Manzo Nagano, Canada’s first recorded immigrant from Japan and many more With information about various cultural communities in early Victoria and significant dates, May Wong’s City in Colour is a collection of fascinating stories of unsung characters whose stories are at the heart of Victoria’s history.

Book Synopsis Radio History Short Stories by : Spurgeon G. Roscoe
Download or read book Radio History Short Stories written by Spurgeon G. Roscoe and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It might be hard to imagine the life of a radio officer more than fifty years ago, while flying a plane or travelling on ships (such as the Royal Navy’s HMS Bounty) across vast stretches of sea, navigating to far-flung destinations. Author Spurgeon “Spud” G. Roscoe lived that life from the age of seventeen, learning the breadth and depth of telecommunications, which steadily evolved from flags and Morse code to more sophisticated systems. In Radio History Short Stories, Roscoe shares his unmatched stories of his life and work with wry humour and encyclopedic knowledge. The tales in this book are certainly entertaining in their vibrant detail. But more than that, they serve to preserve the complex and little-known history of the radio operator. Written as somewhat of a memoir, while delving into some fictional accounts, Radio History Short Stories is a companion book to Roscoe’s previously published nonfiction work, Radio History Ship to Shore, a treatise on ships’ navigational aids and communications systems over the centuries.
