Book excerpt: The first pictorial history of Colorado containing only drawings made by nineteenth century artists. Five hundred scenes show the West's most colorful state just as it was sketched by early artists and explorers. Here are pictures of Indians and Indian fighters, of riotous mining camps and dirt-street towns, of narrow gauge trains and palatial Victorian hotels. The oversize pages teem with views of cowhands, sodbusters, townsfolk, and politicians in an era that is gone forever. Professor Clifford P. Westermeier, a leading Colorado historian, searched for woodcuts, lithographs, and paintings from scarce and obscure sources. The great collections of the Colorado State Historical Society and the Denver Public Library were opened generously to make this book possible. Each picture, copied from the original, is accompanied by explanatory text and source identification.--From publisher description.

Book Synopsis Francesca Woodman by : Nora Burnett Abrams
Download or read book Francesca Woodman written by Nora Burnett Abrams and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never-before-published work by an iconic woman artist from the very start of her career. Francesca Woodman took her first photograph at the age of the thirteen. From the time she was a teenager until her death at twenty-two, she produced a fascinating body of work exploring gender, representation, and sexuality by photographing her own body and those of her friends. Featuring approximately forty unique vintage prints, as well as notes, letters, postcards, and other ephemera related to the artist's burgeoning career, the volume, which accompanies an exhibition of the same name at MCA Denver, details both Woodman's creative and personal coming-of-age during the years 1975-1979. Francesca Woodman: Portrait of a Reputation considers how the artist came into her creative voice and her singular approach to photography at a notably young age. Ranging from portraits in her studio/apartment in college to self-portraits in the bucolic Colorado landscape in which she was raised, these works capture Woodman's hallmark approach to art making: enigmatic, rigorous, and poignant. The volume also includes select photographs of Woodman taken by friend and RISD classmate George Lange during this period. Taken together, they present a nuanced and in-depth study of this formative period in the development of this groundbreaking artist.

To make matters worse, her father has just hired a new artist to engrave the headstones--the creepy Mr. Stein. Bernie has a bad feeling about him right from the start, and after snooping around his cottage, she discovers an engraved portrait of their neighbor . . . a woman who promptly dies the next day. Book excerpt: "This volume represents the fourth in a series of five Class 1 Overview histories prepared by the Colorado State Office, Bureau of Land Management. The purpose of these works is to develop a synthetic history of a given area in order to provide our managers and staff specialists with a baseline overview of the history of a district. ... It must be noted that the major cities , like Denver, Colorado Springs, Boulder, Fort Collins, and Greeley are only mentioned. This is because there is no public land in these places and the Bureau's mandate is to manage the public lands, not private estates."--Foreword.
Book Synopsis Life of George Bent by : George E. Hyde
Download or read book Life of George Bent written by George E. Hyde and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Bent, the son of William Bent, one of the founders of Bent's Fort on the Arkansas near present La Junta, Colorado, and Owl Woman, a Cheyenne, began exchanging letters in 1905 with George E. Hyde of Omaha concerning life at the fort, his experiences with his Cheyenne kinsmen, and the events which finally led to the military suppression of the Indians on the southern Great Plains. This correspondence, which continued to the eve of Bent's death in 1918, is the source of the narrative here published, the narrator being Bent himself. Almost ninety years have elapsed since the day in 1930 when Mr. Hyde found it impossible to market the finished manuscript of the Bent life down to 1866. (The Depression had set in some months before.) He accordingly sold that portion of the manuscript to the Denver Public Library, retaining his working copy, which carries down to 1875. The account therefore embraces the most stirring period, not only of Bent's own life, but of life on the Plains and into the Rockies. It has never before been published. It is not often that an eyewitness of great events in the West tells his own story. But Bent's narrative, aside from the extent of its chronology (1826 to 1875), has very special significance as an inside view of Cheyenne life and action after the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864, which cost so many of the lives of Bent's friends and relatives. It is hardly probable that we shall achieve a more authentic view of what happened, as the Cheyennes, Arapahos, and Sioux saw it.
