Textile effluents contain compounds which have the capacity to cause more harm when ingested. There are many dye removal technologies like coagulation, photo oxidation which help to remove color from dye wastewater. The use of adsorption to remove color from dye wastewater has been used for many centuries. Activated carbon can efficiently remove color from dye wastewater but it is very expensive and so different researches have been conducted to get the adsorption capacity of different forms of adsorbents. These adsorbents can be gotten from agricultural waste, biomass, and industrial waste and even household materials like paper. In this research, agricultural adsorbents like orange peel, banana peel and onion peel are being used as adsorbents to treat dyes like Acid red 88, Direct blue 15 and Rhodamine 6G. The amount of adsorbent dose and dye concentration is being varied to know at what dye concentration or adsorbent dose effectively removes color from dye wastewater. In this study, the treatment of a binary mixture of dye wastewater with fruit drink of different concentrations, low (10ppm), medium (50ppm) and high (100ppm). The dye waste water was prepared in the laboratory while the fruit drink was bought from a local grocery store. Color removal efficiency was investigated for the three adsorbents; orange peel, banana peel, onion peel. Transmittance and Absorbance values were used to determine the removal efficiency of the adsorption process

Book excerpt: Various industries such as textiles, paper, clothing, food etc. uses significant amount of dyes and generates large volumes of effluents which are heavily loaded with pollutants, turbidity and are highly concentrated in salts and color. A significant improvement in effluent quality is required prior to discharging into the water bodies. In the present research work performances of combined process using chemical coagulation and microfiltration were investigated in treating dyes wastewater containing reactive dyes (Disperse Yellow 3, Congo Red, Methylene Blue, Crystal Violet & Pro Indigo). The main objective was the color removal from dye wastewater using stage 1 coagulation process combined with stage 2 microfiltration treatment. Also the objective was to choose appropriate coagulants with appropriate doses for each type of dye. Further objectives were to achieve reductions in the Total Organic Carbon (TOC) in the dye wastewater. Decolorization and TOC rates were highly dependent on the type of the dye, type of coagulant used and concentration of dye.

Book excerpt: This study shows the treatment of a binary mixture of dye wastewater of varied concentrations and fruit drink wastewater at three different concentrations; low (10 ppm), medium (50 ppm) and high (100 ppm) concentrations. Synthetic dye wastewater prepared in the laboratory was used as a representation of textile wastewater while the fruit drink wastewater was purchased from the grocery store. Transmittance and Absorbance values were used as indices to measure the color removal efficiency of the combined coagulation and microfiltration process. Even though there are modern technologies for color removal till this date, coagulation is one of the most economical alternatives to all technologies present now. In this thesis, the performance of a combined coagulation-microfiltration process for the removal of dyes was studied. After the coagulation-microfiltration process, transmittance values as high as 99.8% were achieved. Color removal efficiency was also investigated for the three coagulants; ferric chloride, aluminum sulfate and ferrous sulfate. Ferric chloride gave the best results in terms of color removal efficiency. Ferrous sulfate gave the worst result in terms of color removal efficiency.

Book excerpt: The water is widely used in process industries, but its use is not always made in a rational way. Due to the growing demand for water by the people and industries, it is necessary to consider the new problem of water supply. Water contamination by organic and inorganic compounds is of great public concern. The textile and sugar industry are the major producers of the wastewater with a varying parameters. Even though there are new technologies for color removal till this date coagulation is seen as the most economical alternative to all technologies present now. In this thesis we study the performance of this two stage filtration with a matrix of dyes and coagulants.Coagulation even though being one the first and most conventional treatments discovered a long time ago is still being used after so many years of research as it qualifies as the most economic primary treatment. Microfiltration is one of the new age technologies which is considered as one of the most efficient technologies at present. This thesis will be aiming at the results of these combined processes. The industrial effluents have a lot of foreign particles which may affect these processes in a positive or a negative way. In such a scenario studying the processes gives us an idea of the treatment behavior in real time. The thesis aims at also studying the effect on the performance of the two filtration processes in presence of sugar. The turbidity and transmittance reading are being taken to assess the performance and the color removal from the aqueous solution of these dyes with sugar.

Book excerpt: The use of cheap and ecofriendly adsorbents have been studied to find an alternative substitution of activated carbon for the removal dyes from wastewater. Adsorbence from empty fruit bunches (EFB) were taken from palm oil industries were successfully remove dye from simulated wastewater. In this study, dye solution (methyl violet) were added into empty fruit bunches (EFB) which been treated with formaldehyde and sulphuric acid. This experiment's results were compared with result from similar experiment with powder activated carbon (PAC) which commonly use in industries to varying dye concentration, adsorbent dosage and pH. The result showed that the amount of the adsorbent was increased, the percentage of dye removal increased accordingly. An initial pH of the solution in the range 2-10 was favorable for the methyl violet removal for the adsorbent. The adsorption efficiency of different adsorbents was in order PAC>EFB Ttreated with sulphuric acid>EFB treated with formaldehyde. Adsorbents are very efficient in decolorized dilute solution. The empty fruit bunches (EFB) is a resource which has huge potential to be used for power generator. Today, it have been tried to use wastewater treatment as adsorption agent.

Book excerpt: In this book the authors go back to basics to describe the structural differences between dyes and pigments, their mechanisms of action, properties and applications. They set the scene by explaining the reasons behind these differences and show how dyes are predominately organic compounds that dissolve or react with substrates, whereas pigments are (predominantly) finely ground inorganic substances that are insoluble and therefore have a different mode of coloring. They also describe the role of functional groups and their effect on dyeing ability, contrasting this with the way in which pigments cause surface reflection (or light absorption) depending on their chemical and crystalline structure and relative particle size. The book explores the environmental impact of dyes in a section that covers the physical, chemical, toxicological, and ecological properties of dyes and how these are used to assess their effect on the environment and to estimate whether a given product presents a potential hazard. Lastly, it assesses how, in addition to their traditional uses in the textile, leather, paper, paint and varnish industries, dyes and pigments are indispensable in other fields such as microelectronics, medical diagnostics, and in information recording techniques.
