Book excerpt: In this inspirational and unflinchingly honest memoir, acclaimed author Reyna Grande describes her childhood torn between the United States and Mexico, and shines a light on the experiences, fears, and hopes of those who choose to make the harrowing journey across the border. Reyna Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this “compelling...unvarnished, resonant” (BookPage) story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries. As her parents make the dangerous trek across the Mexican border to “El Otro Lado” (The Other Side) in pursuit of the American dream, Reyna and her siblings are forced into the already overburdened household of their stern grandmother. When their mother at last returns, Reyna prepares for her own journey to “El Otro Lado” to live with the man who has haunted her imagination for years, her long-absent father. Funny, heartbreaking, and lyrical, The Distance Between Us poignantly captures the confusion and contradictions of childhood, reminding us that the joys and sorrows we experience are imprinted on the heart forever, calling out to us of those places we first called home. Also available in Spanish as La distancia entre nosotros.

Book excerpt: My son joined the Army in 2005. He was 18 years old. He was my youngest child and my only son. When he became a teenager, he wanted to go to Arizona to live with his father. His father and I had joint custody in Missouri in case he ever changed his mind and wanted to come home to me. I only saw him a week in the summer and a few days at Christmas. The divorce decree said I was to have him all summer and every holiday. From previous experience with his father I knew this would never happen. When he went to the Army his father would not even give his sister his address because he didn't want her to give it to me. I went to an Army recruiter but his office was closed. I found a Navy recruiter who found out my son was at Fort Hood. When my letters started coming back "not at Fort Hood," I wrote to the government. I received a reply within a week and started writing and sending packages to him and his buddies. When I first knew he was in Iraq I would wake myself up praying for him and his buddies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth sociological exploration of present-day colorism in the lives of black women, investigating the lived experiences of a phenomenon that continues to affect women of African descent. Race still matters. And for black women, the related issues of skin tone are just as important today as in decades past. Part cultural commentary, part empirical analysis, this book offers a compelling study and discussion of colorism—a widely discussed but understudied issue in "post-racial" America—that demonstrates how powerful a factor skin color remains in the everyday lives of young black women. Author JeffriAnne Wilder conducted interviews with dozens of young black women about the role of colorism in their everyday lives. Collectively, these findings offer a compelling empirical and theoretical analysis of colorism in key areas of 21st-century life, including within family and school settings, in the media, and in intimate relationships. The culmination of nearly two decades of the author's deep entrenchment in colorism studies, Color Stories: Black Women and Colorism in the 21st Century provides a new perspective on a controversial issue that has been a part of black culture and academic study for generations by exploring how the contemporary nature of colorism—from Facebook to the First Lady to Beyoncé—impacts the ideas and experiences of black women. This work serves as essential reading for anyone interested in learning more about the historical and contemporary significance of colorism in modern-day America, regardless of the reader's race, sex, or age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memoirs of Race, Color, and Belonging provides a fresh look at the complex dialogue of race and identity in memoir, examining three generations of biracial African Americans’ experiences in their autobiographies. Exploring writers from James McBride and Shirlee Taylor Haizlip to Barack Obama, Toi Dericotte, Natasha Trethway, Rebecca Walker, and Emily Raboteau, this volume explores the ways in which these memoirists refute terms regarding race and simple understandings of belonging, using their contested embodied positions as sites for narration, quest, and protest. Organized chronologically, this volume will provide readers insight into memoirs from Jim Crow America to the Civil Rights period and finally those considering the post-soul (and post-Loving v. Virginia) generation. Memoirs of Race, Color, and Belonging interrogates these difficult spaces surrounding identity construction, encouraging new conversations surrounding visibility of mixed-race individuals and experiences for future generations. Through archives and personal testimony, this book provides a model for interweaving theoretical and personal accounts of color in American culture to encourage discussions that transgress disciplinary boundaries in the today’s dialogue.

Book excerpt: Marie Dicker Haas knew how to make friends and keep themÑand being connected to others was what she treasured most. In this memoir, her spirit shines through, as do her philosophies on life, which she developed over more than 90 years before her death in 2017. From her formative days growing up on Staten Island, New York, to her years at Cornell University, through the World War II years, and on to life as it unfolded, she writes with a thoughtful, creative style. She writes courageously of her loves, including the death of Sammy Greenwald during World War II, which she writes Òaffected me more profoundly than any other event I had experienced until that time.Ó He had been born next door, and heÕd always been in her life. Years later, Marie eloped with a concert violinist who melodiously transformed her life for the next twenty-five years, and two children gave her the opportunity to experience one of her greatest joys: motherhood. She also shares lessons from her greatest challenges.

Book excerpt: It's fall, 1959, and Homer "Sonny" Hickam and his fellow Rocket Boys are in their senior year at Big Creek High, launching handbuilt rockets that soar thousands of feet into the West Virginia sky. But in a season traditionally marked by celebrations of the spirit, Coalwood finds itself at a painful crossroads. The strains can be felt within the Hickam home, where a beleaguered HomerSr. is resorting to a daring but risky plan to keep the mine alive, and his wife Elsie is feeling increasingly isolated from both her family and the townspeople. And Sonny, despite a blossoming relationship with a local girl whose dreams are as big as his, finds his own mood repeatedly darkened by an unexplainable sadness. Eager to rally the town's spirits and make her son's final holiday season at home a memorable one, Elsie enlists Sonny and the Rocket Boys' aid in making the Coalwood Christmas Pageant the best ever. But trouble at the mine and the arrival of a beautiful young outsider threaten to tear the community apart when it most needs to come together. And when disaster strikes at home, and Elsie's beloved pet squirrel escapes under his watch, Sonny realizes that helping his town and redeeming himself in his mother's eyes may be a bigger-and more rewarding-challenge than he has ever faced. The result is pure storytelling magic- a tale of small-town parades and big-hearted preachers, the timeless love of families and unforgettable adventures of boyhood friends-that could only come from the man who brought the world Rocket Boys

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you know someone who lives in a haunted house? What would you do if you moved into a haunted house? The story you are about to read is true. In fact it is the story of me and my family. I decided I wanted to move but where should I move to. I decided maybe I should leave the city and look further up north. I never expected to come this far up but here we are. They always say you never know what you're looking for until it hits you. One rainy Saturday morning I took the trip Upstate a three hour drive one way to meet with the real estate lady for another day of house hunting. This day I found the house I was looking for, or did it find me? Why I say this is because this is the house that I and my children said we didn't want when she had sent us the pictures over the internet. When the family and I went to meet with the real estate lady and the house inspector something happened that caught our attention as well as the attention of the real estate lady. I don't think we were wanted here. The Spirits did many things to send us away. I didn't get flustered too quickly though. I knew I needed help with this problem but who would I call. Now my hunt was on, I knew I needed to contact the paranormal society to get help. I started going through the internet. I found a chapter in Pennsylvania that was able to help me. Join me as I tell our story of what life is like in a home inhabited by Spirits. It's certainly never dull. I am a single mother of two children ages now 7 and 12 who wasn't happy in her environment or surroundings. My home life, my job, my neighborhood were all getting me down. I wanted out of everything. I took a big chance moving away from my family. My in laws also took a chance with me. I was making a new start for myself, my children and my in laws. I was scared not knowing where I would end up. It took me a year of house hunting, trying to find a home that I could afford. Searching in Queens or Brooklyn was impossible the prices there were astronomical. I always take chances in my life and usually stand on my feet like a cat in the end. This house wasn't on my list of possibilities but here I am two years later with a story to tell.
