Book excerpt: My son joined the Army in 2005. He was 18 years old. He was my youngest child and my only son. When he became a teenager, he wanted to go to Arizona to live with his father. His father and I had joint custody in Missouri in case he ever changed his mind and wanted to come home to me. I only saw him a week in the summer and a few days at Christmas. The divorce decree said I was to have him all summer and every holiday. From previous experience with his father I knew this would never happen. When he went to the Army his father would not even give his sister his address because he didn't want her to give it to me. I went to an Army recruiter but his office was closed. I found a Navy recruiter who found out my son was at Fort Hood. When my letters started coming back "not at Fort Hood," I wrote to the government. I received a reply within a week and started writing and sending packages to him and his buddies. When I first knew he was in Iraq I would wake myself up praying for him and his buddies.

Book Synopsis The Practical Heart by : Allan Gurganus
Download or read book The Practical Heart written by Allan Gurganus and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A luminous quartet, five years in the writing, reveals even more fully the breathtaking range of "a storyteller in the grand tradition" (New York Times). Allan Gurganus's voice--by turn bawdy and serene, folkloric and profane--deepens as it soars into this quiet masterwork. Four new fables--rich in event, comedy, experience--surge with the force of history's headlines versus sidestreet human fortitude. Improbable heroes and heroines spiral outward from Gurganus's familiar Carolina terrain. Each fires into a wild and differing direction, all in quest of some fantasy that's practically impossible: --An impoverished immigrant has her portrait painted (or not) by John Singer Sargent. --A young man's devotion to saving eighteenth-century homes—and their odd lingering ghosts—helps him find unlikely ways to renovate his own mortality. --A pillar of the community becomes, over the course of one cartoon matinee, its pariah. --A beloved, transfixingly homely father shows his village and his only son a decency stronger than race, humiliation, or even death itself. These characters' quixotic missions prove mysterious, often even to themselves. Their legacies are not easily deciphered. And yet, their most impractical wishes soon become the heartiest facts about each. They manage to wrest battle-courage from everyday indecision. Out of superstition and convention, they lift certainty. They each find a wealth of consoling truths banked--immortal--in the all-too-human heart. Allan Gurganus's great powers--announced more than a decade ago by Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All--here achieve a yearning exuberance worthy of a new Whitman. These leaps of sexual longing, empathy, and faith become a major new gift from this essential fablemaker.
Book Synopsis Fwd March by : George Scott Chandler

Book excerpt: In the Southern Baptist community where he grew up, he was a "difficult" child-restless, outspoken, and unconventional, with a flair for the dramatic. But for George Scott Chandler, the journey toward self-discovery and acceptance would lead him to an unexpected place: the fast-paced, high-stakes world of competitive marching and pageantry, where he found a whirlwind of color and movement, song and dance, and expression and creativity. Here, the hyperactivity and artistic temperament that made him the target of bullying over the years would finally allow him to thrive. Now, as an award-winning choreographer and coordinator for the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, Chandler's passion for the marching arts has allowed him to create, coach, and choreograph performances all over the world-from the Odyssey stage show in Nagoya, Japan, to the set of the hit television show Glee. Filled with inspiring anecdotes and fascinating insights, FWD March is a true coming-of-age story for anyone who has ever felt alienated, bullied, or misunderstood, as well as fans of competitive marching everywhere.

Book excerpt: About the Book A captivating and moving exploration of two soldiers who put it all on the line to preserve our freedom – from the author of Landing On Your Feet. Today we struggle to navigate an increasingly complex and dangerous world and to understand our place in it. We long for and value the same things – freedom, family, comfort, acceptance, and love. Love of self and love of humanity, despite the flaws. In this insightful and encouraging book, Mike Kerrison explains how two quartermaster soldiers, 1st Army, 4th Infantry, fought side by side during WWII to preserve and protect these cherished values. Corporal George Kerrison and PFC Russ Kearney were only two soldiers amongst millions. Their story is personal. It belongs to them and was protected for nearly 80 years after they landed on Utah Beach on June 6th, 1944. Only by the courage of one man, do we have the story at all, which can now be shared and cherished by each of us. This story joins the multitudes of untold stories that we know are still out there. Kerrison captures the pure essence of these two men, their sacrifices and courage, and their commitment to their country, their families, and to each other. With sensitivity and unflinching honesty that has won him legions of readers, Mike Kerrison explains the importance of keeping these stories alive before it’s too late. George and Russ at age twenty, entered one of the most deadly and terrifying wars our world has ever known. What they did for us is beyond our grasp of understanding and needs to be remembered, honored, and celebrated. As forthright as it is honest, as dreadful as it is joyful, George and Russ reveal our crying out for a better world while remembering those who fought to preserve it. About the Author Mike Kerrison is an entrepreneur, author, speaker, and business consultant. His popular first book, Landing On Your Feet, was published in 2003 and his highly sought after third book, Breakaway Sales, will be published in the winter of 2023. After graduating from Ohio University, he started his career as a salesman with IBM. After that he started, built, and eventually sold three highly successful technology companies. He is also an expert in American History with his primary focus being the European Battles of WWII. He is a passionate American Patriot and has great respect and admiration for the US Military. His father, George Kerrison and his uncle, Russ Kearney are his two heroes and the focus of this book. He wrote their amazing story of their D-Day landing at Normandy, their terrifying battles across western Europe, their enduring friendship, and to honor their courage to preserve our liberty. He had two additional motivations for writing this story. First, was to fulfill a promise to the many members of his large, extended family. And second, to fulfill a promise to all Americans to preserve these stories of heroism and liberty before they are forgotten forever. He wanted the world to know what the “everyday soldier” was willing to sacrifice to protect and preserve our country and our world. Mike is happily married to his wife Andrea and has four children and nine grandchildren. He makes his home in Minnesota.

Download or read book My Father's Heart written by Steve McKee and published by Da Capo Lifelong Books. This book was released on 2008-12-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen-year-old Steve McKee watched his father die of a heart attack on the couch in their TV room. A lifelong smoker and workaholic, John McKee had been floored by a heart attack five years earlier. The McKee clan-perhaps including a demoralized John himself-had long been waiting for the other shoe to drop. At age fifty-two, Steve McKee learned that he was his father's son more than he had ever hoped-he, too, has serious cardiovascular disease. Haunted by his father's seeming surrender to the condition, McKee set out to find the man who died before the son could know him. In so doing, what might he, Steve McKee, learn of himself? Chronicling the disorienting first days following John McKee's death, My Father's Heart is an extraordinary story of an all-too-ordinary scenario: A father dies, a son remains, and the loss casts a long shadow across a generation. Rich in evocative detail of time, place, and family, it is a powerful memoir of love, forgiveness, and finding oneself.
Download or read book The Time of My Life written by Ev Nau and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While driving home from a long trip, Ev Nau was thinking about some events in his youth and suddenly realized that he knew very little about his own father's youth. As his trip continued, he further discovered that his own grandchildren really didn't know him either. So began his project of recording his memoirs for them. Following his retirement, Ev went through every bit of documentation he could find, from his mother's baby book to reports he had written at work, to recapture as much of his life as possible. Old pictures were the source of many of his memory kick-starts. Each tale seemed to rekindle a new story, and he spent most of his time just chuckling about how clearly it all came back to him. Born during World War II and surviving so many traumatic historical events, Ev shows people his life in perspective to many of these historical events and how they shaped him and his growth. From zany antics, and there are many, to tragic circumstances, way too many, his story graphically shows how this complicated man grew into a well-respected teacher, coach, and mentor for so many others. Whether chasing rabbits in a sports car on a golf course or marching endless miles in a drum and bugle corps or helping a close friend learn of his father's death, Ev has a compelling story to tell. And those tales only scratch the surface! Wait until you read about his Winter Carnival experience!
