Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Life in New Hampshire It is the belief of the author that the aim of all teachers of history should be to cultivate and foster in the minds of children a fondness for historical reading, rather than the mere memorizing of historical facts. In order to best accomplish this purpose, the child's interest should first be awakened by the historical associations of places with which he is familiar. He should be told the legends and stories of the town or city in which he lives, and at the same time carefully led to see their connection with the broader historical life of the country. Following the stories of local interest, the early history of the colony, with its accounts of the struggles and hardships endured by the early settlers, should be developed. This method will tend not only to broaden and intensify the child's interest in historical reading, but will give to him some conception of the value of his birthright as an individual of the state and of the nation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Colonial Homes One end which I proposed to myself in this book, besides presenting house and home historically, was to gather up as many distinct types Of the colonial architecture of New England as pos sible, from the rude farmhouse of the first settlers to the elegant mansion of a later generation, as it seems to me nothing could give half so clear a picture of a century and a half of colonial life. It was this idea alone which could give cohesion to a series of sketches having little connection in themselves, except as recording fragments of history that had become scattered with the lapse of time. Most of them were written some years ago for Appleton'sjoumml; but by the addition of several new subjects, besides re-writing the old ones, the collection bears out, I think, the idea conveyed by the title of our colonial homes. Book Synopsis Old Times in the Colonies (Classic Reprint) by : Charles Carleton Coffin
Download or read book Old Times in the Colonies (Classic Reprint) written by Charles Carleton Coffin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Times in the Colonies The settlement of our country was the beginning of a new era in human affairs. The people of England, ever since the days of King John, when the barons compelled him to sign the Magna Charta in the meadow of Runnymede, had struggled against tyranny; and when the emigrants sailed across the Atlantic to rear their homes in Virginia and New England, it was the transplanting of liberty to a continent where everything was new, and where the conditions that surrounded them were wholly unlike those of the Old World. This volume is an outline of some of the principal events that tran spired during the colonial period of our country, and portrays the hard ships and sufferings of those who laid the foundations of a new empire. It will show how the Old World laws, habits, and customs were gradually changed; how the grand ideas of Freedom and the Rights of Man took root and flourished. It covers the period from the discovery and settle ment of America to the Revolutionary War. In 1876 I wrote a volume entitled The Boys of '76 - a narrative of the battles of the Revolution, and of the trials and devotion of our fathers in establishing the indepen dence of the United States. While preparing that work, I discovered that there was no volume in existence that would give the young people of our country an idea of the struggles of men in England and Europe against the tyranny of emperors, kings, popes, archbishops, bishops, and inquisitors; to supply that want, I wrote a second volume, entitled The Story of Liberty, which traced a chain of events through a period of five hundred years, from the signing of the Magna Charta to the settlement of Jamestown and Plymouth. This volume, therefore, fills the gap between the others in time, and together they make a series, not of general history, but an outline history of the progress of ideas. Download or read book Pemaquid written by Rufus King Sewall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pemaquid: Its Genesis, Discovery, Name and Colonial Relations to New England English records have preserved the acts of the English race in the discovery, survey, seizin and possession of New England, somewhat scattered in detail, but easily collated, to be arranged in their natural relations, in verification of the truth of history. Many of these initial acts have never been fully analyzed and combined in their natural order and relations, to the development of New England history in Maine, but rather have been eclipsed in the glamor of more ambitious local surroundings, foreign to Maine. I now propose to lift the shadows, relieve the glamor, disclose and trace the life threads of New England to rootlets at Pemaquid.
