Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonel Alexander McNutt and the Pre-Loyalist Settlements of Nova Scotia The expulsion of the Acadians was regarded by Lawrence and Shirley as preliminary to a well considered plan for the introduction of English inhabitants into Nova Scotia in large numbers. On the eve of the expulsion Lawrence wrote to Colonel Monckton: When the French inhabitants are removed, you will give orders that no person presume to take possession of any of the lands until a plan of the whole has been laid before me, and terms of encouragement to English settlers deliberately formed and made publick. Book Synopsis The Loyalists by : Christopher Moore
Download or read book The Loyalists written by Christopher Moore and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-03-04 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1783 and 1784, some fifty thousand Americans felt that they could not support the revolution against Britain. They were called Loyalists – and there would be no place for them in the new United States. As they streamed into the Canadian colonies to the north, they changed forever the face of settlement there. Their arrival would eventually lead to the formation of the provinces of New Brunswick and Ontario. First published in hardcover in 1984, the bicentenary of the migration, The Loyalists tells the very human story of these people – of the societies that shaped them, the attitudes that motivated them, and the circumstances that determined their future and influenced the future of Canada. It went on to win the Secretary of State's Prize for Excellence in Canadian Studies.

Book Synopsis British Emigration to British North America by : Helen I. Cowan
Download or read book British Emigration to British North America written by Helen I. Cowan and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1961-12-15 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1928 Miss Cowan published in the series "University of Toronto Studies, History and Economics" her first work on population movements: British Emigration to British North America, 1783-1837. This study has remained a standard reference on its subject and for some time has been available for purchase only through second-hand channels. In the intervening years Miss Cowan maintained an active interest in this field of history; for the present volume she has revised the earlier study in the light of her own and others' investigations and has expanded her discussion to include another quarter-century. The book is an attempt to give students and general readers something of the story of the outpouring of British subjects who peopled British North America in the years before Confederation. Economic dislocations coincident with the Napoleonic Wars and the industrial and agricultural revolutions were causing a vast uprooting of population. At the same time, the beginning of political and humanitarian reform brought a demand for assistance in poor relief, for land, labour and other improvements at home and for government aid in emigrating to the colonies. The author describes the various policies of governments on emigration, the activities of timber, mercantile and land companies which became greatly interested in the flow of population overseas, and the efforts of individual and societies to held the needy who took part in this epic movement.
