Book excerpt: The Diamond Sutra" is a profound Buddhist scripture that captures an in-depth dialogue between Buddha and his disciple Subhuti in an ancient Indian garden. The scripture unfolds with the question, "How should a bodhisattva abide, and how should he subdue his mind?" and delves into one of Buddhism's core teachings: emptiness. In essence, emptiness signifies that all phenomena arise from interdependent causes and conditions, devoid of inherent self-nature. This concept inspires us in how we perceive and relate to the world, guiding us to let go of attachments. Buddhism asserts that attachment is the root of suffering, as our misconceptions and strong attachments to things often lead to dissatisfaction and pain. The significance of the "Diamond Sutra" lies in its teachings on understanding and practicing the wisdom of emptiness. By comprehending emptiness, we can perceive the true nature of things, transcend attachments, and attain inner peace and serenity. This holds profound meaning for every ordinary person, as it provides wisdom to navigate life's challenges and difficulties. Through the teachings of the "Diamond Sutra," we can better cope with stress, anxiety, and life's uncertainties, leading to a more fulfilling and tranquil life.

Book excerpt: A masterful translation of the Diamond Sutra—with insightful commentary and helpful historical information for parsing this essential Zen Buddhist scripture Zen Buddhism is often said to be a practice of mind–to–mind transmission without reliance on texts—in fact, some great teachers forbid their students to read or write. But Buddhism has also inspired some of the greatest philosophical writings of any religion, and two such works lie at the center of Zen: The Heart Sutra, which monks recite all over the world, and The Diamond Sutra, said to contain answers to all questions of delusion and dualism. This is the Buddhist teaching on the perfection of wisdom and cuts through all obstacles on the path of practice. As Red Pine explains: The Diamond Sutra may look like a book, but it’s really the body of the Buddha. It’s also your body, my body, all possible bodies. But it’s a body with nothing inside and nothing outside. It doesn’t exist in space or time. Nor is it a construct of the mind. It’s no mind. And yet because it’s no mind, it has room for compassion. This book is the offering of no mind, born of compassion for all suffering beings. Of all the sutras that teach this teaching, this is the diamond.

Book excerpt: The Diamond Sutra is the one that has been widely circulated and has the most translated versions and commentaries in Chinese. Among them, the translation of the Diamond Sutra by Master Kumarajiva is the most widely circulated of all translations. The Diamond Sutra presents the Buddhist wisdom of emptiness in the form of a dialogue between the Buddha and his disciple Subhuti in the Jetavana Garden of ancient India. The root cause of our suffering is that we do not see things as they are, as emptiness. If we can see, understand, and practice emptiness in our lives, then we will have a life free of worry, no matter what our fate might be.Buddhism believes that everything that we are aware of, including our thoughts, is conditioned. When the conditions disappear, the things also disappear. The Buddhist criterion of real existence is that the existence of this fixation must be unconditionally arising, and that this thing cannot change in any way. According to this criterion, all things in the universe, including ourselves, do not exist in the ultimate level, but are only temporary phenomena that arise conditionally. Therefore, all phenomena are not truly existing, but exist only at a relative level. When we have something in our mind that we cannot let go, we have to remind ourselves of the Buddhist theory of emptiness and learn to let go. It is not worth it to worry about something that is not real, does not truly exist. In this way, we can live happier and more freely. The Buddhist theory of emptiness lays the foundation for the theory behind letting go.

A gem among the vast Perfection of Wisdom literature, the Diamond Sutra elicits an experience of eternal truth through its use of a seemingly paradoxical style, as the reader goes back and forth between "what is" and "what is not." Master Hsing Yun skillfully plumbs the depths of the Diamond Sutra, illuminating for us its power to change who we are and how we interpret our world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diamond Sutra (Chin-Kang-Ching) Or Prajna-Paramita: Translated From the Chinese With an Introduction and Notes In the preface to The Vagrahhhediha, Max Muller made a critical observation regarding certain peculiarities of 'style' adopted in this treatise by the Buddhist philo Sophers who wished to convince their hearers of the truth of their philosophy. From the Sanscrit text, perhaps it is difficult to realise fully what Asvaghocha 1 described as the persuasiveness of Buddha's eloquence yet we may quite appreciate the academic instinct of Kumarajiva, whose work on The Diamond Sutra bears evidence of a laudable endeavour to produce a classic, which in the Chinese language is almost entirely beyond reproach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diamond Sutra (Chin-Kang-Ching) Or Prajna-Paramita: Translated From the Chinese With an Introduction and Notes This English version of The Diamond Sutra, translated from the Chinese text of Kumarajiva, owes its inception to successive conversations with a friend, profoundly interested in the interpretation of oriental systems of philosophy. During those conversations renderings into English were made of numerous passages from the works of Confucius, Mencius, and Lao-Tsz. Having surveyed briefly those fertile fields of thought, we passed, by a natural transition, into the delectable Buddhist realm. Some passages from the Chinese Sutras, comprising texts and annotations, were consecutively examined, and variously considered. Eventually it was suggested that The Diamond Sutra, perhaps one of the most metaphysical of the works ascribed to Buddha, be conveniently rendered into the English language. In order that the rather unfamiliar text might assume due intelligibility, parallel passages and numerous annotations were subjoined, as the pleasant work of translating proceeded. The idea of printing and publishing the text seemed to follow as a natural sequence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Two classic Zen Buddhist texts that present the foundational teachings of the tradition—now collected in one volume for the modern practitioner The Diamond Sutra, composed in India in the fourth century CE, is one of the most treasured works of Buddhist literature and is the oldest existing printed book in the world. It is known as the Diamond Sutra because its teachings are said to be like diamonds that cut away all dualistic thought, releasing one from the attachment to objects and bringing one to the further shore of enlightenment. The format of this important sutra is presented as a conversation between the Buddha and one of his disciples. The Sutra of Hui-neng, also known as the Platform Sutra, contains the autobiography of a pivotal figure in Zen history and some of the most profound passages of Zen literature. Hui-neng (638–713) was the sixth patriarch of Zen in China but is often regarded as the true father of the Zen tradition. He was a poor, illiterate woodcutter who is said to have attained enlightenment upon hearing a recitation of the Diamond Sutra. Together, these two scriptures present the central teaching of the Zen Buddhist tradition and are essential reading for all students of Buddhism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Diamond Sutra is a Buddhist sutra from the "Perfection of Wisdom" genre, and emphasizes the practice of non-abiding and non-attachment. The Diamond Sutra is one of the most influential Mahayana sutras in East Asia, and is a key object of devotion and study in Zen Buddhism. A copy of the Chinese version of Diamond Sutra, found among the Dunhuang manuscripts in 1907 by Aurel Stein, was dated back to 11 May 868. It is, in the words of the British Library, "the earliest complete survival of a dated printed book." The Diamond Sutra was translated by Kumarajiva, Jiumoluoshi. Jiumoluoshi was a Buddhist monk, scholar, and translator from the Kingdom of Kucha. He first studied teachings of the Sarvastivadin schools, later studied under Buddhasvamin, and finally became an adherent of Mahayana Buddhism, studying the Madhyamaka doctrine of Nagarjuna. Kumarajiva settled in Chang'an during the Sixteen Kingdoms era. He is mostly remembered for the prolific translation of Buddhist texts written in Sanskrit to Chinese he carried out during his later life.
