Aspects in Anomalous Transport in Plasmas is the first book to systematically consider anomalous plasma transport theory and provides a unification of the many theoretical models by emphasizing interrelations between seemingly different methodologies. It is not intended as a catalogue of the vast number of plasma instabilities leading to anomalous transport; instead it chooses a number of these and emphasizes the aspects specifically due to turbulence. After a brief introduction, the microscopic theory of turbulence is discussed, including quasilinear theory and various aspects of renormalization methods, which leads to an understanding of resonance broadening, mode coupling, trajectory correlation and clumps. The second half of the book is devoted to stochiastic tramsport, using methods based on the Langevin equations and on Random Walk theory. This treatment aims at going beyond the traditional limits of weak turbulence, by introducing the recently developed method of decorrelation trajectories, and its application to electrostatic turbulence, magnetic turbulence and zonal flow generation. The final chapter includes very recent work on the nonlocal transport phenomenon.

Book excerpt: Short mean free path descriptions of magnetized plasmas have existed for almost 50 years so it is surprising to find that further modifications are necessary. The earliest work adopted an ordering in which the flow velocity was assumed to be comparable to the ion thermal speed. Later, less well known studies extended the short mean free path treatment to the normally more interesting drift ordering in which the pressure times the mean flow velocity is comparable to the diamagnetic heat flow. Such an ordering is required to properly retain the temperature gradient terms in the viscosity that arise from the gyrophase dependent and independent portions of the distribution function. Our treatment corrects the expressions for the parallel and perpendicular collisional ion viscosities found in these later treatments which used an approximate truncated polynomial expression for the distribution function and neglected the non-linear piece of the collision operator due to its bi-linear form. The modified parallel and perpendicular ion viscosities contain additional terms quadratic in the heat flux. In addition, we solve for the electron parallel and gyro-viscosities which were not considered by previous drift ordered treatments. As in all drift orderings we assume the collision frequency is small compared to the cyclotron frequency. However, we permit the perpendicular scale lengths to be much less than the parallel ones as is the case in many magnetic confinement applications. As a result, our description is valid for turbulent and collisional transport, and also allows stronger poloidal density and temperature variation in a tokamak than the standard Pfirsch-Schlüter ordering. Rotation is an extremely useful tool in plasma control, allowing for instability suppression, enhanced confinement, and the separation of different species. Ash, meanwhile, is a hot, charged byproduct of the fusion reaction that tends to heat electrons, degrading confinement and radiating away energy. Alpha channeling rectifies this situation by transferring the ash energy into a useful wave, while simultaneously extracting the ash from the plasma.It has been proposed that alpha channeling also extracts net charge from the plasma, generating an electric field and thus E x B rotation. However, existing theories do not explain how this process would conserve momentum.To develop a consistent theory, we first examine collisional transport in a magnetized plasma to review the deep connection between charge transport and momentum conservation. We then use this intuition to guide the development of a self-consistent, momentum-conserving theory of alpha channeling. We find an important difference between plane waves which grow in time, which do not drive rotation, and spatially structured waves, which do. This theory definitively determines the conditions under which alpha channeling extracts charge, within a very simple mathematical framework.Our models have many applications. We explore how E x B rotation can be used in toroidal systems to provide a self-consistent rotational transform, or in open-field-line geometries to centrifuge and remediate nuclear waste. We also show how waves can mediate collisionless momentum exchange between plasma constituents, and thus generate currents and magnetic fields in astrophysical systems.The techniques we develop turn out to also have immediate application to inertial confinement systems. We uncover surprising effects in Z-pinches, showing how magneto-inertial fusion reactors can be made more reactive than previously thought by leveraging multi-ion transport effects that naturally flush out ash. We also explain unintuitive rotation and current redistribution effects in existing Z-pinch experiments.Despite our application to very different plasma systems, occurring in apparently far-flung regimes of plasma physics, the same themes and models emerge repeatedly. Recognizing these deep connections reveals new opportunities for improving plasma control.
