Book excerpt: Applied Atomic Collision Physics, Volume 3: Gas Lasers describes the applications of atomic collision physics in the development of many types of gas lasers. Topics covered range from negative ion formation in gas lasers to high-pressure ion kinetics and relaxation of molecules exchanging vibrational energy. Ion-ion recombination in high-pressure plasmas is also discussed, along with electron-ion recombination in gas lasers and collision processes in chemical lasers. Comprised of 14 chapters, this volume begins with a historical summary of gas laser developments and an overview of the basic operating principles of major gas laser types. The discussion then turns to the mechanism of formation of negative ions in gas lasers; ion-ion recombination in high-pressure plasmas; electron-ion recombination in gas lasers; and collision processes in chemical lasers. Subsequent chapters focus on high-energy carbon dioxide laser amplifiers; spectroscopy and excited state chemistry of excimer lasers; rare-gas halide lasers; transient optical absorption in the ultraviolet; and pre-ionized self-sustained laser discharges. The final chapter considers the stability of excimer laser discharges. This book will be of interest to physicists and chemists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaseous Electronics and Gas Lasers deals with the fundamental principles and methods of analysis of weakly ionized gas discharges and gas lasers. The emphasis is on processes occurring in gas discharges and the analytical methods used to calculate important process rates. Detailed analyses of a variety of gas discharges are presented using atomic, ionic, and gas lasers as primary illustrations. Comprised of 12 chapters, this book begins with some initial categorization of gas discharge species and an overview of their interactions. The discussion then turns to an elementary theory of a gas discharge; inelastic collisions; distribution functions and the Boltzmann equation; and transport coefficients. Subsequent chapters focus on the fluid equations; electron-density decay processes; excited species; atomic neutral gas lasers; molecular gas lasers; and ion lasers. The important electron loss processes that determine the behavior of a plasma when the source and loss terms balance are also examined. This monograph will be of value to graduate students, practitioners, and researchers in the fields of physics and engineering, as well as to professionals interested in working with weakly ionized discharges.

The confer ence aim, to mix physicists and chemists interested in this exciting field both from Europe and further afield, was well fulfilled by the attendance of around 250 participants and the submission of about 100 papers, which dre presented here. Numerous people at both the Physics Department, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, and at the Projektgruppe fUr Laserforschung, MPI, Garching, con tributed hard work to the organization; in addition to Dr. Bob Harrison, who bore the biggest burden with conspicuous success, we particularly thank Hugh MacKenzie, Richard Dennis and last but not least Miss Joanne Askham and the secretaries in Edinburgh together with Frau Doris Maischberger and the secretaries in Garching. Book excerpt: This experimental program was designed to elucidate the behavior of electronically excited atoms and molecules in gases and examine methods by which these species might generally be detected using laser-based spectroscopic techniques. To that end, several atomic and molecular states were observed using Resonance Multiphoton Ionization, In addition the photodissociative production of electronically excited states was investigated and the subsequent deactivation of excited atoms in collisional encounters with molecules studied. Keywords include: Lasers, Photochemistry, Energy transfer, Iodine, Kinetics, Potassium, Electronic excitation, and Mercury bromide.

This book was released on 1977 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several topics in laser theory and the interaction of radiation with matter have been addressed. First, a mathematical theory of a high intensity single mode gas laser has been developed. New computational techniques have been applied which serve to unite several previous approaches to single mode laser theory. A generalized dressed atom approach was formulated to provide a new way of viewing the physical processes occurring when high intensity fields interact with matter. Second, a theoretical study of the manner in which laser sepctroscopy can be used to probe collision effects in atomic and molecular systems has been undertaken. Both two and three level systems were studied; steady state and coherent transient techniques were examined. It is now apparent that laser spectroscopy will be a useful tool for the determination of various excited state differential and total cross sections. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas phase molecular spectroscopy is a powerful tool for obtaining information on the geometry and internal structure of isolated molecules and their interactions with others. It enables the understanding and description, through measurements and modeling, of the influence of pressure on light absorption, emission, and scattering by gas molecules, which must be taken into account for the correct analysis and prediction of the resulting spectra. Collisional Effects on Molecular Spectra: Laboratory Experiments and Models, Consequences for Applications, Second Edition provides an updated review of current experimental techniques, theoretical knowledge, and practical applications. After an introduction to collisional effects on molecular spectra, the book moves on by taking a threefold approach: it highlights key models, reviews available data, and discusses the consequences for applications. These include areas such as heat transfer, remote sensing, optical sounding, metrology, probing of gas media, and climate predictions. This second edition also contains, with respect to the first one, significant amounts of new information, including 23 figures, 8 tables, and around 700 references.Drawing on the extensive experience of its expert authors, Collisional Effects on Molecular Spectra: Laboratory Experiments and Models, Consequences for Applications, Second Edition, is a valuable guide for all those involved with sourcing, researching, interpreting, or applying gas phase molecular spectroscopy techniques across a range of fields. Provides updated information on the latest advances in the field, including isolated line shapes, line-broadening and -shifting, line-mixing, the far wings and associated continua, and collision-induced absorption Reviews recently developed experimental techniques of high accuracy and sensitivity Highlights the latest practical applications in areas such as metrology, probing of gas media, and climate prediction
