We fall achingly short of intimately connecting with and deeply interjecting the truths of scripture into the everyday realities of our lives, as we live them out amidst the incessant demands and tangled complexities of the 21st century. We therefore miss a sweeping and torrential infusion of what God intends for our lives. Because we miss it, we are left abysmally poorer when that need not be the case. An Intimate Collision arises out of the belief that people sense there to be a far greater reality to our portrayal of God and the Christian life than that which we have grasped.

Book excerpt: An Episcopal priest maintains that "earth becomes the womb of heaven so that God may be born in the manger of human experience". This book blesses the earthy and calls the church to cease being so lofty and pious. It encourages us to remove the wall that designates a church building as holy and the local bar as secular. Serving as a clergyman for over 45 years, Charles Colwell has seen first hand how the Christian walk can be a bumpy trail and how those bumps become places of great blessing. Doubt becomes merely another facet of faith, not its opposite, and is to be honored. Even our most desperate moments have a way of readying us for a discovery of God's power in our weakness as the gift of God's radical grace transforms us from broken people into empowered pilgrims on the road requiring us to challenge our myopic views of those of other faiths. "Collision of Worlds" separates what is essential rock from what is shifting sand as the author fearlessly addresses: dogmatism, the interpretation of scripture, the gay issue, hell-and, believe it or not the presence of ghosts. This book is fresh, daring, and offers a challenge to believers as well as those who may be sitting on the fence.

In the 1960s homosexual men faced prison sentences if they were sexually active, and so they made themselves invisible. By 1986 they were demanding their rights and the nation's attention. This change had come after years of debate. The New Zealand Homosexual Law Reform Society and the gay liberation movement actively sought reform. Many within society actively opposed it, and the issue became a catalyst for a significant rift in the churches. Intense lobbying and vehement opposition marked the fifteen months before the Homosexual Law Reform Bill was passed in July 1986. Based on 22 interviews with important participants in the debates, as well as extensive research in archives and published material, Worlds in Collision is the first time this important story has been told. It is a major contribution not only to the international literature on the history of homosexuality but also to our understanding of New Zealand society in the later twentieth century.

The president of PTP Corporation uses every trick to secure the acquisition of AIC Corporation. He is so smart and so ruthless his subordinates hardly know how to interpret his commands and often fall short. The stockholders love him, but in the final episode, he might actually be failing while achieving the greatest success. The lovely, kindhearted Lucinda Brahms loses her job but gains what is most precious to her. Do the young couple in the story find each other in spite of the dangerous intrigues and unexpected secrets exposed? How will they escape the evil overshadowing them and survive to fight again on their own terms? The collisions in this story are on several levels. The action moves from the boardroom, to the university campus, and on to secret hideouts. Light and dark, warm and cold intersect as the key figures collide in the struggle for power.

Book excerpt: Mary Decker's clash with Zola Budd at the 1984 Los Angeles Games is one of the biggest and most controversial events in Olympic history. In a head-to-head that gripped the imagination of the world, the 3000 metres race pitted the experienced and glamourous world champion from the host nation against a prodigious, teenage waif from South Africa wearing a hastily-organised British flag on her vest and, memorably, no shoes on her feet. Disastrously, a mid-race collision saw Decker tumble to the inside of the track after her legs tangled with Budd's as the 18-year-old overtook the American in a battle for pole position. Distraught and unable to carry on, the tearful Decker watched in frustration as Maricica Puica of Romania stormed to gold while Budd, who was heavily booed by the partisan crowd in the closing stages, faded to seventh. Using the famous Olympic moment as its focal point, Collision Course tells the story of two of the best-known and greatest athletes of al ltime, analyses their place in history as pioneers of women's sport, and lifts the lid on two lives that have been filled with sporting and political intrigue that, until now, has never been fully told.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the convergence of trends in two American institutions – the economy and the criminal justice system. The American economy has radically transformed in the past half-century, led by advances in automation technology that have permanently altered labor market dynamics. Over the same period, the U.S. criminal justice system experienced an unprecedented expansion at great cost. These costs include not only the $80 billion annually in direct expenditures on criminal justice, but also the devastating impacts experienced by justice-involved individuals, families, and communities. Recently, a widespread consensus has emerged that the era of “mass incarceration” is at an end, reflected in a declining prison population. Criminal justice reforms such as diversion and problem-solving courts, a renewed focus on reentry, and drug policy reform have as their goal keeping more individuals with justice system involvement out of prisons, in the community and subsequently in the labor force, which lacks the capacity to accommodate these additional would-be workers. This poses significant problems for criminal justice practice, which relies heavily on employment as a signal of offenders’ intentions to live a law-abiding lifestyle. The diminished capacity of the economy to utilize the labor of all who have historically been expected to work presents significant challenges for American society. Work, in the American ethos is the marker of success, masculinity and how one “contributes to society.” What are the consequences of ignoring these converging structural trends? This book examines these potential consequences, the meaning of work in American society, and suggests alternative redistributive and policy solutions to avert the collision course of these economic and criminal justice policy trends.

Book excerpt: Khayyam has been the subject of speculation on the part of literary critics ever since Edward Fitzgerald published his own version of the Rubaiyat in 1859. This edition represented the first opportunity to study in English the work of Khayyam by a Persian scholar. There is no conclusive evidence to prove which of the many quatrains attributed to Khayyam are authentic. Ali Dashti therefore constructs a likeness of the poet from references found in the works of writers of his day or immediately after, and from Khayyamâe(tm)s own works on philosophy, mathematics and astronomy, of which the authenticity is not questioned. Khayyam emerges as a widely read and broad-minded scholar, immersed in his own studies, cautious and moderate, averse to committing himself on controversial questions. Using this portrait Dashti draws up a list of some hundred quatrains which are in keeping with Khayyamâe(tm)s character. Selling point: An elegant and accurate translation which throws light on the nature of Khayyamâe(tm)s religious and philosophical beliefs.

One day, a new destiny dawned when he discovered what was referred to as the God Formula. It revealed what had been undefined and would produce extraordinary results. His objective was to obtain complete control. Sammy demonstrated his influence on Earth. A new age had come through takeovers of the internet, achieving higher levels of consciousness, recurring virgin births, and miracles. Sammy's life was in constant danger throughout his existence. His identity was initially secret and his divinity unclear. His progress was crippled by an illness that caused him much pain and suffering. Through a series of highs and lows, dreams and hallucinations, he evolves in consciousness to realize a new human identity that will help shape the future. He was the most unlikely hero. He reveals himself slowly through lecturing and writing until there is no other conclusion that could be reached. Sammy had arrived and would change the path of humanity to avoid its destruction. He would neither confirm nor deny who he was, but all the evidence eventually pointed to him. His DNA was no longer double helix shaped, but was a series of intertwined loops of infinity symbols. Everything was connected, infinitely. As the universe exposes its yet unseen beauty and expanse, many possibilities appear for all of us to explore. The novel is particularly relevant in a time of constant changes and advancements in technology.
