This book was released on 2018-10-13 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding of protons and neutrons, or "nucleons"â€"the building blocks of atomic nucleiâ€"has advanced dramatically, both theoretically and experimentally, in the past half century. A central goal of modern nuclear physics is to understand the structure of the proton and neutron directly from the dynamics of their quarks and gluons governed by the theory of their interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and how nuclear interactions between protons and neutrons emerge from these dynamics. With deeper understanding of the quark-gluon structure of matter, scientists are poised to reach a deeper picture of these building blocks, and atomic nuclei themselves, as collective many-body systems with new emergent behavior. The development of a U.S. domestic electron-ion collider (EIC) facility has the potential to answer questions that are central to completing an understanding of atoms and integral to the agenda of nuclear physics today. This study assesses the merits and significance of the science that could be addressed by an EIC, and its importance to nuclear physics in particular and to the physical sciences in general. It evaluates the significance of the science that would be enabled by the construction of an EIC, its benefits to U.S. leadership in nuclear physics, and the benefits to other fields of science of a U.S.-based EIC.

Book Synopsis Future Of High Energy Physics, The - Some Aspects by : Flores Castillo Luis Roberto
Download or read book Future Of High Energy Physics, The - Some Aspects written by Flores Castillo Luis Roberto and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monumental discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC marked the beginning of a new era in the high energy physics. Although the particle spectrum of the Standard Model is now complete with the Higgs boson, the hierarchy problem and the lack of explanation of the origin of dark matter imply that a new Beyond the Standard Model physics should exist. There is however no clear indication (experimental or otherwise) of the energy scale at which this new physics should appear. Current results from the LHC experiments have shown no unpredicted effects up to pp collision energies of 13 TeV. If not observed directly at the LHC, the new physics may reveal itself through deviations of Higgs properties from their Standard Model expectations, or it may become directly accessible only at new, higher-energy accelerator facilities. It is then of primary importance to have a comprehensive review of the available and planned accelerators and their design, physics motivation and expected performance. This book comprises 26 carefully edited articles with well-referenced and up-to-date material written by many of the leading experts. These articles — originated from presentations and dialogues at the second HKUST Institute for Advanced Study Program on High Energy Physics — are organized into three aspects, Theory, Accelerator, and Experiment, focusing on in-depth analyses and technical aspects that are essential for the developments and expectations for the future high energy physics.

Book Synopsis Physics at the Large Hadron Collider by : Amitava Datta
Download or read book Physics at the Large Hadron Collider written by Amitava Datta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-05-30 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an epoch when particle physics is awaiting a major step forward, the Large Hydron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva will soon be operational. It will collide a beam of high energy protons with another similar beam circulation in the same 27 km tunnel but in the opposite direction, resulting in the production of many elementary particles some never created in the laboratory before. It is widely expected that the LHC will discover the Higgs boson, the particle which supposedly lends masses to all other fundamental particles. In addition, the question as to whether there is some new law of physics at such high energy is likely to be answered through this experiment. The present volume contains a collection of articles written by international experts, both theoreticians and experimentalists, from India and abroad, which aims to acquaint a non-specialist with some basic issues related to the LHC. At the same time, it is expected to be a useful, rudimentary companion of introductory exposition and technical expertise alike, and it is hoped to become unique in its kind. The fact that there is substantial Indian involvement in the entire LHC endeavour, at all levels including fabrication, physics analysis procedures as well as theoretical studies, is also amply brought out in the collection.

Book Synopsis Techniques and Concepts of High-Energy Physics IV by : Thomas Ferbel
Download or read book Techniques and Concepts of High-Energy Physics IV written by Thomas Ferbel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held once again at the Hotel on the Cay, in the scenic harbor of Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The ASI brought together a total of 67 participants, from 17 different countries. It was a great success, due to the dedication of the inspiring lecturers, the exceptional student body, and, of course, the beautiful setting. The primary support for the meeting was again provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The ASI was cosponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, by Fermilab, by the National Science Foundation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contri bution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as· support for worthy students from developing nations. As in the case of the previous ASI's, the'scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics. The present volume of lectures should complement the material published in the first three ASI's, and prove to be of value to a wider audience of physicists. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the encouragement and support that I have continued to receive from colleagues and friends in organizing this meeting. I am indebted to the members of my Advisory Committee for their infinite patience and excellent advice. I am grateful to my distinguished lecturers for participating in the ASI.
Book Synopsis Surveys in Theoretical High Energy Physics - 2 by : Raghavan Rangarajan
Download or read book Surveys in Theoretical High Energy Physics - 2 written by Raghavan Rangarajan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-13 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents pedagogical reviews of important topics on high energy physics to the students and researchers in particle physics. The book also discusses topics on the Quark–Gluon plasma, thermal field theory, perturbative quantum chromodynamics, anomalies and cosmology. Students of particle physics need to be well-equipped with basic understanding of many concepts underlying the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. This is particularly true today when experimental results from colliders, such as large hadron collider (LHC) and relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC), as well as inferences from cosmological observations, are expected to further expand our understanding of particle physics at high energies. This volume is the second in the Surveys in Theoretical High Energy Physics Series (SThEP). Topics covered in this book are based on lectures delivered at the SERC Schools in Theoretical High Energy Physics at the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, and the University of Hyderabad.
