Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Men and the Bible The Obj ect of this book is to review the ever widening and deepening interest in Bible study among thoughtful men, especially among men In educational institutions, with the purpose of showing the conditions, responsibility and opportunity of educated leadership in the pro motion of the study of the Christian Scrip tures. The chapters on Bible study in the Orient were prompted by a world tour which the writer made in 1909, with the View of gain ing first-hand knowledge of Bible study move ments among students and educators in Asia, and of assisting if possible in their develop ment. I wish to express my thanks to the editors of The Century Magazine, who have generously given their permission to the publication in this book of three papers, with certain pictures, which originally appeared in that magazine. I desire also to record my debt and my deep appreciation to my two associates, Neil Mc Millan, J r., and Harrison S. Elliott, for their invaluable assistance in the final preparation of this book for the press. In a large correspondence from various parts of the world, representing men and wom en of almost every nationality and creed, the questions treated in the following pages are continually suggested. The writer is hopeful, therefore, that this book may be the means of assisting persons, both at home and abroad, toward the solution of some of these Bible problems, which are indeed life problems, through a new discovery for themselves of the Book which Goethe called The Book of the Nations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday Christians need practical and accessible theology. In this handbook first published in 1890, Charles Octavius Boothe simply and beautifully lays out the basics of theology for common people. "Before the charge 'know thyself,'" Boothe wrote, "ought to come the far greater charge, 'know thy God.'" He brought the heights of academic theology down to everyday language, and he helps us do the same today. Plain Theology for Plain People shows that evangelicalism needs the wisdom and experience of African American Christians. Walter R. Strickland II reintroduces this forgotten masterpiece for today. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man and the Bible in the Light of Reason To undertake any proof of this proposition would be as foolish as for one to attempt, by argument, to prove his own existence to another who holds him by the hand and looks him in the face. Whatever may be said or claimed for the lower animals, on this point, certainly we are not in error when we assert that man has reason. It is sometimes said, and said as if designed to rebut the claim that man has reason, that the lower animals have reason. Allowing this to be. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plain Man and His Bible It is in the Bible that we get the history Of man's moral condition. From the, study of science we can get a history of most Of the important mat ters Of life, but while we are doing this we are constantly reminded Of the fact that nowhere out side the Bible can we get the history of man's moral condition. Nature gives us no help. The earth itself is silent. The stars above us only con fuse us. Everything is dumb in answer to the question What is man? However, the Bible comes with the answer. It tells us that God made man in his own image. It tells us of man's fall. It tells us how the fall came about. It tells us that in the beginning God was pleased with man; they were together - God and man; that man turned away from God, and in this turning plunged the race into sin. The Bible is the only book which gives our origin and dis sects our present moral condition, and also points out the way of triumph. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Doctrine of Man: Or the Anthropology and Psychology of Scripture The aim is to present in one view the Bible Theology and Philosophy of Man and his Nature. What is claimed for this endeavour, in the specific department of Biblical Psychology, is to have called attention to the distinction which the Bible attributes to spirit, as the highest element in man's constitution, and on the possession of which is grounded its unique doctrine of man's likeness to his Maker. It also claims to be a consistent exposi tion of the relations of soul and spirit in man. Rejecting as unscriptural and unsupported by reason the notion which founds upon the Bible use of these terms a Tripartite Theory of man's nature, cause is yet shown why the neglect of that usage, as a meaningless parallelism, must yield to accurate exegesis and historic fact. These two discussions specially exemplify that which it is the object of the whole treatise to maintain, namely, that a study of the psychological ideas of Scrip ture throws valuable sidelights on its doctrinal teaching.
