Physical and sexual abuse measures were used to determine the frequency of abuse in dating relationships. Specifically, it was hypothesized that women who have high levels of commitment will be more likely to stay in a relationship with their boyfriend than women with low levels of commitment. Furthermore it was hypothesized that physical and sexual abuse by a partner would be associated with lower commitment, thus women with an abuse history would be more likely to leave the relationship. The results suggest that abuse did not affect commitment. Women who experienced abuse were no different than women who had not experienced abuse in satisfaction, quality of alternatives or subjective norms. Women who were abused had higher levels of investment than women who had never experienced abuse. Commitment was negatively correlated with stay-leave decision. Women who scored high on commitment were more likely to stay in the relationship than women who had low commitment scores."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruth Tucker recounts a harrowing story of abuse at the hands of her husband—a well-educated, charming preacher no less—in hope that her story would help other women caught in a cycle of domestic violence and offer a balanced biblical approach to counter such abuse for pastors and counselors. Weaving together her shocking story, stories of other women, and powerful stories of husbands who truly have demonstrated Christ’s love to their wives, with reflection on biblical, theological, historical, and contemporary issues surrounding domestic violence, she makes a compelling case for mutuality in marriage and helps women and men become more aware of potential dangers in a doctrine of male headship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the reasons African-American women leave or stay in abusive relationships and the commonalities that direct their decisions. Although studies have been conducted on Black family violence, limited previous studies focused solely on African-American women and domestic abuse or violence in conjugal relationships. the study was designed to document and reflect on the stories of seven African American women who experienced abuse or violence in their intimate relationships; it is just a sampling of the many women who have left or stayed in an abusive relationship. Semi-structured taped interviews, using open ended questions, beginning with a pilot interview, were conducted to ensure that the data elicited from the interviews would be appropriate for the study. the women who participated in this study ranged in age from 31 to 55 years; Six of the seven women who participated in the study have left their abusive partners. the women described the types of abuse and violence they experienced in their relationships and recounted how their decision to leave or stay in the abusive relationship was formed. Applicable responses were analyzed for common threads; and, coupled with an analysis of the myths and stereotypes that are associated with African-American women, culminated in the results. the conclusions identified accepting behaviors which emulate the behaviors of female adult role models and a lack of self-sufficiency. the music intrinsic to this population was also identified as an influencing factor. There is still much work to be done. Educating and empowering African-American women will enhance their self-esteem and awareness and their perception of what constitutes an abusive behavior. This grounding will begin the process of eradicating their dependency on an abusive partner.

A tour de force.” -Eve Ensler "Terrifying, courageous reportage from our internal war zone." -Andrew Solomon "Extraordinary." -New York Times ,“Editors' Choice” “Gut-wrenching, required reading.” -Esquire "Compulsively readable . . . It will save lives." -Washington Post “Essential, devastating reading.” -Cheryl Strayed, New York Times Book Review An award-winning journalist's intimate investigation of the true scope of domestic violence, revealing how the roots of America's most pressing social crises are buried in abuse that happens behind closed doors. We call it domestic violence. We call it private violence. Sometimes we call it intimate terrorism. But whatever we call it, we generally do not believe it has anything at all to do with us, despite the World Health Organization deeming it a “global epidemic.” In America, domestic violence accounts for 15 percent of all violent crime, and yet it remains locked in silence, even as its tendrils reach unseen into so many of our most pressing national issues, from our economy to our education system, from mass shootings to mass incarceration to #MeToo. We still have not taken the true measure of this problem. In No Visible Bruises, journalist Rachel Louise Snyder gives context for what we don't know we're seeing. She frames this urgent and immersive account of the scale of domestic violence in our country around key stories that explode the common myths-that if things were bad enough, victims would just leave; that a violent person cannot become nonviolent; that shelter is an adequate response; and most insidiously that violence inside the home is a private matter, sealed from the public sphere and disconnected from other forms of violence. Through the stories of victims, perpetrators, law enforcement, and reform movements from across the country, Snyder explores the real roots of private violence, its far-reaching consequences for society, and what it will take to truly address it.

Book excerpt: "Highly irreverent, but filled with wisdom and infused with deep caring, Mixed Nuts is a memoir of a life working in psychotherapy." "Some people assume that all therapists are new-agey hand-holders who just listen and nod like bobbleheads, then suggest an astrology reading, a gluten-free diet, and your choice of complimentary love flower or polished healing stone on your way out the door. That's not me. My job is to help fix what's broken." Speaking to the layperson and the practitioner alike, even Rick's signature humor can't hide his deep understanding of mental illness, his desire to help heal it quickly and effectively, and his pragmatic and often creative approach to treatment."

Book excerpt: The authors are proud sponsors of the 2020 SAGE Keith Roberts Teaching Innovations Award—enabling graduate students and early career faculty to attend the annual ASA pre-conference teaching and learning workshop. Our Social World: Introduction to Sociology inspires students to develop their sociological imaginations, to see the world and personal events from a new perspective, and to confront sociological issues on a day-to-day basis. Organized around the "Social World" model, a conceptual framework that demonstrates the relationships among individuals (the micro level); organizations, institutions, and subcultures (the meso level); and societies and global structures (the macro level), the authors use this framework to help students develop the practice of using three levels of analysis, and to view sociology as an integrated whole, rather than a set of discrete subjects. The Seventh Edition includes new coverage of climate change, the influence of robots and artificial intelligence on workers, race relations in the Trump era, transgender identity and gender fluidity, sexual harassment in the workplace and the #MeToo movement, declining marriage rates, the impact of tracking for students at all academic achievement levels, smoking as an example of health and inequality in the U.S., gun violence and the student movement to control access to guns, social media, and Russian interference in the 2016 election.
