Book Synopsis Merging Colleges for Mutual Growth by : James Martin
Download or read book Merging Colleges for Mutual Growth written by James Martin and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 2000-10-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Merging Colleges for Mutual Growth, James Martin and James E. Samels bring together a distinguished group of higher education professionals to provide the first comprehensive handbook for those involved in—or considering—an academic merger, consolidation, or new form of resource sharing. Providing practical and theoretical advice on the academic, financial, administrative, legal, personnel, and student aspects of mergers, the authors set forth an action plan for those involved in planning and implementing a mutual growth–rather than a bankruptcy bailout—merger. They cite numerous instances of successful mergers in the United States and Great Britain and offer specific examples to explain why they succeeded. Among the topics discussed are presidential leadership, the challenges of curriculum restructuring and faculty development, the legal and financial implications of mergers, the role of trustees and governing boards in both public and private institutions, and strategies merging student cultures, alumni organizations, and library resources. The book also includes hints and checklists useful to academic managers planning a merger or anyone affected by one, including alumni and local community members. Contributors: Bryan E. Carlson, James Martin, Andre Mayer, Sheila Murphy, Franklin Patterson, Patricia Sacks, James E. Samels,Victor F. Scalise, Jr., Paul Temple, John F. Welsh, Celia Whitchurch, Donald L. Zekan.
Book Synopsis The Academic Library in the United States by : Mark L. McCallon
Download or read book The Academic Library in the United States written by Mark L. McCallon and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advances the belief that the library--more than any other cultural institution--collects, curates and distributes the results of human thought. Essays broaden the debate about academic libraries beyond only professional circles, promoting the library as a vital resource for the whole of higher education. Topics range from library histories to explorations of changing media. Essayists connect modern libraries to the remarkable dream of Alexandria's ancient library--facilitating groundbreaking research in every imaginable field of human interest, past, present and future. Academic librarians who are most familiar with historical traditions are best qualified to promote the library as an important aspect of teaching and learning, as well as to develop resources that will enlighten future generations of readers. The intellectual tools for compelling, constructive conversation come from the narrative of the library in its many iterations, from the largest research university to the smallest liberal arts or community college.

Book Synopsis Leading Change in Academic Libraries by : Catherine Cardwell
Download or read book Leading Change in Academic Libraries written by Catherine Cardwell and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Institutions of higher education and academic libraries are not the traditional organizations they once were. They are subject to a variety of forces, including shifting and changing populations, technological changes, public demands for affordability and accountability, and changing approaches to research and learning. Academic libraries can no longer establish their excellence and ground their missions, visions, and strategic directions using the old means and methods. Leading Change in Academic Libraries is a collection of 20 change stories authored by academic librarians from different types of four-year institutions. Librarians tell the story firsthand of how they managed major change in processes, functions, services, programs, or overall organizations using John Kotter's Eight-Stage Process of Creating Major Change as a framework for examining change at their institutions, measuring their successes and areas for improvement, and determining progress. In five sections--strategic planning, reorganization, culture change, new roles, and technological change--chapters discuss tackling common challenges such as fear, anxiety, change fatigue, complacency, unexpected changes of leadership, vacancies, and resistance; look at the results of their tactics; and provide effective practices they found. Each section ends with a thorough analysis of the stories within and the most effective tips for leading that kind of change. Leading Change in Academic Libraries can help you establish flexible, nimble, and collaborative decision-making processes, and facilitate the transition from legacy collections-based libraries to forward-looking service-based libraries"--from the ALA website.
Book Synopsis An Approach to the Consolidation of Snow by : E. D. Feldt
Download or read book An Approach to the Consolidation of Snow written by E. D. Feldt and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A consolidation theory is developed for an age-hardened snow under uniaxial stress in the porosity range of 35 to 55% by considering one mechanism, viz., viscous flow of interparticle bonds. For a uniaxial stress sigma, the differential equation for porosity n in terms of time t is shown to be 1/(1-n) dn/dt = nu sigma n/eta (1-an) where a and nu are structural parameters and eta is the coefficient of viscosity of ice. Comparison of this equation and the integrated form with existing data predicts consistent and reasonable values for a. The predicted values of eta/nu range from 0.01 to 100 times the published values for eta, which may indicate that nu, and hence the consolidation rate, is greatly affected by the diagenetic history of the snow and the conditions of experimentation. Book Synopsis Consolidating Colleges and Merging Universities by : James Martin
Download or read book Consolidating Colleges and Merging Universities written by James Martin and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the midst of falling enrollments and endowments, university leaders consider partnering, merging, and even closing institutions. Since the economic recession of 2008, colleges and universities have looked for ways to lower costs while increasing incomes. Not all have succeeded. Threatened closures and recent institutional mergers point to what might be a coming trend in higher education. The long-term economic weakness of colleges and universities means schools need to become more strategic about how they consider previously unthinkable options. This provocative book will be their indispensable guide to managing the crisis. In Consolidating Colleges and Merging Universities, James Martin and James E. Samels bring together higher education leaders to talk about something that few want to discuss: how institutions might cooperate with their competitors to survive in this economic climate. Barring that, Martin and Samels argue, some will shutter their campuses. But closing, they emphasize, is a complex process that involves more than just sending the students home and turning off the lights. The first one-volume resource for presidents, trustees, provosts, chief financial officers, and faculty leaders planning to partner, merge, or close a college or university, the book offers specific guidelines and action steps used successfully to create multiple forms of partnership between higher education institutions. The book includes contributions by twenty nationally recognized leaders in partnership and strategic planning, as well as an appendix detailing key college and university mergers and closures since 2000. Each chapter includes informative responses from practitioners who answer the question, “What is the single most important lesson you would share with a planning team designing a partnership or merger this year?” Responding to many daunting questions now being raised nationally about institutional fragility and sustainability, Consolidating Colleges and Merging Universities is an honest and practical guide to the possibilities and pitfalls of downsizing American higher education.
