Book excerpt: This is one of the wisest books I've read in years... —New York Times Book Review No writer I know of comes close to even trying to articulate the weird magic of poetry as Ruefle does. She acknowledges and celebrates in the odd mystery and mysticism of the act—the fact that poetry must both guard and reveal, hint at and pull back... Also, and maybe most crucially, Ruefle’s work is never once stuffy or overdone: she writes this stuff with a level of seriousness-as-play that’s vital and welcome, that doesn’t make writing poetry sound anything but wild, strange, life-enlargening fun. -The Kenyon Review Profound, unpredictable, charming, and outright funny...These informal talks have far more staying power and verve than most of their kind. Readers may come away dazzled, as well as amused... —Publishers Weekly This is a book not just for poets but for anyone interested in the human heart, the inner-life, the breath exhaling a completion of an idea that will make you feel changed in some way. This is a desert island book. —Matthew Dickman The accomplished poet is humorous and self-deprecating in this collection of illuminating essays on poetry, aesthetics and literature... —San Francisco Examiner Over the course of fifteen years, Mary Ruefle delivered a lecture every six months to a group of poetry graduate students. Collected here for the first time, these lectures include "Poetry and the Moon," "Someone Reading a Book Is a Sign of Order in the World," and "Lectures I Will Never Give." Intellectually virtuosic, instructive, and experiential, Madness, Rack, and Honey resists definition, demanding instead an utter—and utterly pleasurable—immersion. Finalist for the 2012 National Book Critics Circle Award. Mary Ruefle has published more than a dozen books of poetry, prose, and erasures. She lives in Vermont.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much has been written on the history of psychiatry, remarkably little has been written about psychiatric collections or curating. Exhibiting Madness in Museums offers a comparative history of independent and institutional collections of psychiatric objects in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom. Leading scholars in the field investigate collectors, collections, their display, and the reactions to exhibitions of the history of insanity. Linked to the study of medical museums this work broadens the study of the history of psychiatry by investigating the significance and importance of the role of twentieth-century psychiatric communities in the preservation, interpretation and representation of the history of mental health through the practice of collecting. In remembering the asylum and its different communities in the twentieth century, individuals who lived and worked inside an institution have struggled to preserve the physical character of their world. This collection of essays considers the way that collections of objects from the former psychiatric institution have played a role in constructions of its history. It historicises the very act of collecting, and also examines ethical problems and practices which arise from these activities for curators and exhibitions.

The story details the events of a disastrous expedition to the Antarctic continent in September 1930, and what was found there by a group of explorers led by the narrator, Dr. William Dyer of Miskatonic University. Throughout the story, Dyer details a series of previously untold events in the hope of deterring another group of explorers who wish to return to the continent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the canonical figure Sadegh Hedayat (1903–1951) and draws a comprehensive image of a major intellectual force in the context of both modern Persian Literature and World Literature. A prolific writer known for his magnum opus, The Blind Owl (1936), Hedayat established the use of common language for literary purposes, opened new horizons on imaginative literature and explored a variety of genres in his creative career. This book looks beyond the reductive critical tendencies that read a rich and diverse literary profile in light of Hedayat’s suicide, arguing instead that his literary imagination was not solely the result of genius but rather enriched by a vast network of the world’s literary traditions. This study reflects on Hedayat’s attempts at various genres of artistic creation, including painting, fiction writing, satire and scholarly research, as well as his persistent struggles for artistic authenticity, which transcended solidly established literary and artistic norms. Providing a critical reading of Hedayat’s work to untangle aspects of his writing – including reflections on science, religion, nationalism and coloniality – alongside his pioneering work on folk culture, and how humor informs his writings, this text offers a critical review of the status of Persian literature in the contemporary landscape of the world’s literary studies.

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html "Why are dust and ashes proud?" ( Sirach 10: 9 ). And in many places you will find that pride is disgusting and very hateful. This is what [the prophet David] says here: with one who looks proudly and with an insatiable heart - with this [one] I did not eat ( Ps. 101:4 ), since pride is extremely harmful and pernicious not only for the one who has assimilated it for himself, but also for the one who does not share it for a long time. The prophet placed the greedy, hungry heart next to the proud, since the spiritual disposition of both is the same - both ascending above his neighbor, and greedy in relation to his neighbor. So, it is good, brethren, for us to put aside pride and acquire humility, so that we may not hear: “every one that exalteth himself shall be abased;” but: “he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” ( Luke 18:14 ). At the same time, it is good to be strengthened in temperance and moderation, so that the greed of the heart does not drive away the truth from itself and then hear: "For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare." ( Jer. 13:22 ). Let us avoid the behavior characteristic of people who are proud and greedy, so that, due to the habit of communicating with them, we do not learn their vices (3). /// The great Holy Apostle Paul, recounting the many trials and tribulations to which he had been subjected, cries out [loud]: I die daily! (1 Cor. 15:31). In interpreting these apostolic words, St. John Chrysostom asks, "How did he die on a daily basis?" – and replies: "By zeal and preparedness thereof! And why does the Apostle say this? – “In order to confirm the truth of the resurrection. Who would have opted for so many kinds of death were there no resurrection and no future life ?!” /// “No one can serve two masters ,” says the Lord ( Matt. 6:24 ). About this, St. John Chrysostom teaches: “Do not tell me that you are not worshiping the golden idol, but show me that you are not doing what the gold commands you to do. For the images of idolatry are different: one honors the mammon for gentlemen, another - the womb for God, another - the most universal lust. You do not devour oxen like the Greeks, but much worse, you slaughter your soul; you don’t kneel, you don’t worship, but with great obedience you do everything that commands you womb, gold and lust torment. Therefore, the Greeks are vile, because our passions have been enriched.” (Conversation 6 on the Epistle to the Romans). /// The apostle Paul himself says about himself: I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 6. But for Christ to dwell in us, this is not a matter of one day or two, said St. John Chrysostom, but of many years and years. Moreover, he who wants to acquire Christ must renounce everything: it is impossible to work for the world and God together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asylums once used to confine those deemed mentally unfit linger, forgotten behind trees or urban development, beautiful yet desolate in their decay. Within them festers something far more unnerving than unlit corners or unexplained noises: the case files left to moulder out of sight, out of conscience. Stephanie M. Wytovich forces your hands upon these crumbling, warped binders and exposes your mind to every taboo misfortune experienced by the outcast, exiled, misbegotten monsters and victims who have walked among us. The poetry contained in Hysteria performs internal body modification on its readers in an unrelenting fashion, employing broad-spectrum brutality treatment that spans the physical to the societal, as noted in Stoker Award winner Michael A. Arnzen’s incisive introduction. “Wytovich is nothing short of stupefying in her mastery of blunt impact verse. Even those jaded to the violent extremes of despair and rage in contemporary dark literature will find Wytovich piercing deep into the dark and unmapped vulnerabilities of her readers. Hysteria is a devastating debut.” —John Edward Lawson, author of The Troublesome Amputee and SuiPsalms

Book excerpt: Collections of Madness: Amateur Experiments in Genius begins with e-mail conversations between three poets, Jane, Asil, and Nod, as they contemplate the answers to life's most difficult questions. Together, they decide to write a book and let their findings be known. The friends experience the universe together, but also individually on separate, bumpy paths. Jane, Asil and Nod share their insights, disillusionments, and life-changing epiphanies. In "Questions from the Lonely Girl," Jane Smith explores how she is learning to breathe her own eclectic beauty into the world. In Asil Nottarts's section, "socio-political, purely poetic, mindless ranting, and the creative process," her whimsical poetry asks such introspective questions as "Who am I, really?" and "Is there ultimately any difference?" In "neo/fight blues," poet Nod Nihill2 offers a wide range of verse including creative solutions for a world in crisis, the contents of a fortune cookie, and patterns of rejection. In Collections of Madness, the prolific words of Smith, Nottarts, and Nihill2 will entertain, enrage, excite, and transport you from the profound to the profane--and from the mundane to the extraordinary.
