Book excerpt: Eugene is remembering the summer of 1938 in Frenchtown, a time when he began to wonder “what I was doing here on the planet Earth.” Here in vibrant, exquisite detail are his lovely mother, his aunts and uncles, cousins and friends, and especially his beloved, enigmatic father. Here, too, is the world of a mill town: the boys swimming in a brook that is red or purple or green, depending on the dyes dumped that day by the comb shop; the visit of the ice man; and the boys’ trips to the cemetery or the forbidden railroad tracks. And here also is a darker world–the mystery of a girl murdered years before. Robert Cormier’s touching, funny, melancholy chronicle of a vanished world celebrates a son’s connection to his father and human relationships that are timeless.

Book excerpt: Although Calvin Coolidge is widely judged to have been a weak and even an incompetent president, this study concludes that he was a leader disabled by a crippling emotional breakdown. After an impressive early career, Coolidge assumed the presidency upon the death of Warren Harding. His promising political career suffered a major blow, however, with the death of his favorite child, 16-year-old Calvin Jr., in July 1924. Overwhelmed with grief, Coolidge showed distinct signs of clinical depression. Losing interest in politics, he served out his term as a broken man. This is the first account of Coolidge's life to compare his behavior before and after this tragedy, and the first to consider the importance of Coolidge's mental health in his presidential legacy. Gilbert carefully documents the dramatic change in Coolidge's leadership style, as well as the changes in his personal behavior. In his early career, Coolidge worked hard, was progressive, and politically astute. When he became Vice President in 1921, he impressed the Washington establishment by being strong and activist. After Harding's death, Coolidge took control of his party, dazzled the press, distanced himself from the Harding scandals, and showed ability in domestic and foreign policy. His son's death would destroy all of this. Gilbert documents Coolidge's subsequent dysfunctional behavior, including sadistic tendencies, rudeness and cruelty to family and aides, and odd interactions with the White House staff.

Book excerpt: For the psychotherapist/psychological therapist, notions of diversity and inclusion, such as intersectional feminist, trans*, critical race/whiteness, migration, (in)equality, queer, disability, post-colonial, decolonial, approaches and studies, are both increasingly important, and yet increasingly difficult. This book explores these developments and raises the important questions: Are these difficulties to do with the biases of the person who is the psychotherapist, and/or could it also sometimes have to do with how diversity, inclusion and related terms are constructed? Crucially, clients may now find it difficult to find a therapist who is able to explore with them their concerns around diversity and inclusion which can be complicated and may take time to consider. This book presents cutting-edge research to enable explorations of our changing world which is so different to the one we were born into (let alone our, often older, own psychotherapists and supervisors). Diversity, Inclusion and Culture Wars in Psychotherapy will be a beneficial read for students and scholars of Psychology including Psychotherapy and Counselling. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of European Journal of Psychotherapy and Counselling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. Little research has been done on the nature of decision-making by child welfare professionals in child abuse cases, or on the impact of the different approaches on victims and their families. This text compares a system which relies heavily on criminal prosecution to handle child abuse cases (England) with a system that is more treatment orientated and depends primarily on child welfare and clinical services (Canada). The study examines the extent and nature of the incestuous abuse, how it was disclosed and the initial reponse from the professionals. It then looks at how the cases are processed through child welfare and criminal justice systems with attention paid to the decisions made throughout. The nature of the social service contacts with the family are also examined as are the type and length of treatment. It attempts to determine what factors influence the legal and clinical decisions that are made by various professionals throughout the whole process.
