Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collection of Pamphlets on Child Study, Psychology and Education It is repugnant to me to think of a child as a mere machine. From my stand-point, Rousseau. Who has well expressed the principle upon which child-psychology should rest. By cautioning us not to seek the man in the child. But to think of what he is before he becomes man. Said that the newly-born infant, fettered by imperfect and but halt-developed organs. Is a purely sensuous being who has not even the feeling or his own ex latence and with whom cries and movements are absolute mechanical circota. Destitute of knowledge and will. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Child Psychology The child-study movement of two decades ago rendered perhaps its most important service in turning the attention of students of education to the study of children, rather than of theories about children. Many studies were made and much child-study literature was accumulated. Some of these studies were carefully made and are still of value, though much of what was then done is not now regarded as of fundamental importance. In place of this older child Study movement there has since arisen a newer child or genetic psychology, developed along better scientific lines and better directed. It has based its work not only on the study of children themselves, but also on biology, heredity, experimental pedagogy, and the newer studies of behavior as well. This more recent work has made the earlier text books, written from the point of view of the old child study and a limited psychology, out of date. It is an introduction to this newer point of View which has been attempted in the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It endeavours to set forth the rela tion between them. This relation must be found in the actual lives Of individual children, and it is to help people engaged in education to study those lives that I have written. I have endeavoured to keep as free as possible from technicalities, and throughout to deal with life as a developing whole. Though the treat ment is psychological, the selection of topics has been determined by educational considerations. The end sought is a presentation of the general form in which efficiency of life develops through ever-extending pur poses. The various human faculties are regarded as factors inter - mingled, in an indefinitely large variety of ways, in every piece Of life, and are, therefore, not considered apart and in themselves. Similarly, little or nothing is said of elements of experience which are merely constituent of fuller forms Of life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Child Study: A Manual for Parents and Teachers It is a privilege to introduce to those unacquainted with it one aspect of the work of the Federation for Child Study. Of all the organizations which have sought to stimulate parents to study and know their children, the Federation has had probably the most experience. For over a score of years its leaders have been guiding the reading and discussion of groups of parents and teachers, but especially of parents. Upon their experience are based these Outlines of Child Study. The arrangement is topical; and each topic is presented by (1) a statement of the general state of knowledge of the topic, (2) an outline which lists the detailed facts and problems concerning which there is information available, and (3) a list of helpfully graded references, ranging from attractive popular articles to technical monographs. The treatment is comprehensive, both in the topics chosen and in the outline and references for each. Especially valuable are the sections on concrete aspects of human behavior, such as Toys, Manners, The Use of Money, Pets and Plants, and Hobbies, which the ordinary manuals of Child Study have relatively neglected. The treatment is modern; mental tests, psycho-analysis and the conditioned reflex receiving due (some conservative critics may think, undue) attention, and recent work in all lines being considered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Childhood This book is written with a view to its use in normal schools. A course in general psychology is presupposed, since no space is devoted to the explanation of common psychological terms, though a glossary is added for easy reference. The authors are of opinion that the study of a special branch, such as child psychology, should follow rather than precede, or even accompany, a study of the more general science. It is intended for a textbook, not for reference reading. To this end special features have been employed, e.g. Mar gimal questions as well as topical headings, only limited references, sets of questions with each chapter. These last are of two distinct kinds, exercises and questions for discussion. The former consist of problems, queries to be answered in writing, directions for observations, field-work; the latter are suggested for oral use in the classroom. Either or both kinds are given for each chapter. They have been tested by use, and it is believed that greater value will be secured if they are utilized in the manner indicated. The references following each chapter are in no way supposed to be adequate indexes of source material; but they suggest what may reasonably be required of a group of students working with a good-sized library at command. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of the Child: A Brief Treatise on the Psychology of the Child, With Suggestions for Teachers, Students, and Parents IN my preface to this sound and wholesome book on child study I will present some thoughts on the symbolic and conventional stages of mind in childhood and on the process by which the child outgrows the symbolic stage of mind. I will then consider the doctrine that concepts are mental images and bring forward the theory that they are not mental images but definitions, and con elude by discussing imitation as the chief activity of the child in play and point out the change by which it becomes originality. The earlier period of infancy, say up to the age of six, with average children has been called the symbolic stage, while the later stage, which begins somewhere about six and lasts through life, is called the conventional stage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Years Old or Thereabouts Some Chapters on the Psychology, and Training of Little Children In view of the activity and interest at present displayed in child-welfare schemes and nursery schools it is important that we should all realise that, unless such plans are based on a true knowledge of the nature and possibilities of the little ones concerned, much harm may be done and many opportunities will certainly be lost. The day is long past when it could be maintained that the education of the early years can be safely trusted to the maternal instinct. We all now recognise that instinct requires to be supplemented by knowledge; and the essential knowledge is to be obtained only by close study of the child. In a former book, The Dawn of Mind, I described the beginnings of such a study; in the present work I have set forth some of the further results which I have obtained during the last three years. Each child, no doubt, is different from all others; yet the path that all traverse in the course of their intellectual development is broadly the same, and the aim of this book will be attained if by its means the windings of that path are to some extent illumined for those who aspire to guide the little wayfarers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Study, Vol. 1: With Special Application to the Teaching of Religion What Maeterlinck says of bees is especially true of children, "It is with them as with all that is deeply real; they must be studied, and one must learn how to study them This is the object of this book, to enable all who will, to study children, to observe them in all their words and ways and to find out their significance to the children themselves and the hidden motives which give rise to them. Such child-study is a difficult and absorbing piece of work, requiring much patience and insight and sympathy, but it is work which is abundantly profitable. To a teacher it is indispensable, for no one can hope to educate unknown qualities. Children are the raw material on which the teacher has to work and his function is not merely to teach books or subjects no matter how sacred, but to teach children. Sunday School Teachers are apt to forget that the first essential for success in religious teaching, after the possession of religion itself, is an understanding of and therefore abounding sympathy with children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child: His Thinking, Feeling, and Doing In working over the mass of material which has accumulated on child-study, I have been most impressed by the fact that even now so few general laws can be formulated about child-nature. The material is still in a chaotic state, and seems destined to remain so for some time, because the reports from different authorities are so conflicting. In many cases the conflict is doubtless due to different conditions of observation; but in other cases it'is due to differences in children resulting from heredity, nationality, orfrom surroundings - homes, food, and education. Itherefore appreciate the fact that some of the observations given here will be seriously modified by later ones. I do not necessarily defend the observations which I cite; I only present the most reliable and leave them for confirmation or rebuttal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Mental Life of the Child The appearance of this book in English translation should be welcomed by all serious students of the periods of infancy and early childhood; - not because the claim can be made for it that it represents the outcome of a judicial weighing of all the factors that go to make the infant and the child that which they are, but because it describes, in almost monographic form, a certain, very important, group of these factors, - of which nothing would be known but for the work of Sigmund Freud, whose views the author of this treatise faithfully reproduces. Whatever differences of opinion may be held about some of the bearings of these views, the time is now long past when any one who cares for the truth about the matters to which they pertain can excuse himself for treating them with neglect. To do so would be to neglect the most thorough study which ever has been published, of a set of influences, or motives, which have a vast amount to do with the development of the poetical, literary, religious, philosophical and esthetic tendencies in human nature, and which serve indirectly (through giving rise to "conflicts") as fruitful causes of defects of character, unhappiness, and positive illnesses of pronounced sorts. To some extent the desires to which these motives correspond belong to what might be called the "underworld of human thought." The most significant of the earlier contributions to the history of infancy and early childhood came from men and women who strove to record with fidelity the sayings and doings of their own children. The plan was unexceptionable; but it should be recognized that where the thoughts, feelings and emotions of a human being are the object of study, the ability to "see and hear" is limited, almost rigorously, by the ability to "understand." An observer is not a phonograph, but a person, whose seeing and hearing is largely a selecting, carried on with deference to a set of opinions, mainly preconceived though subject to constant modification. One's senses, urged forward or held back by one's personality, rush to confirm, or hasten instinctively to turn away from, what one's education has led one to regard as noteworthy or objectionable, as the case may be, in the light of what one knew or felt or hoped for or had learned to look on with disfavor or disgust. But child-study covers a wide field, and the author disclaims all ambition to be ency clopaedic. An introduction is obviously intended to lead to something further, and if the reader is induced to study children for himself, and to consult when necessary the more technical books and papers, these pages will not have been written in vain. The author's manifold indebtedness to other writers will be obyious enough to readers familiar with current paido logical literature. The author trusts that this debt is sufficiently acknowledged in the text. He desires to take this opportunity of thanking many friends for suggestions and assistance.
