Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Singer Sargents approach to watercolour was unconventional. Disregarding late-nineteenth-century aesthetic standards that called for carefully delineated and composed landscapes filled with transparent washes, his confidently bold, dense strokes and loosely defined forms startled critics and fellow practitioners alike. One reviewer in England, where Sargent spent much of his adult life, called his work swagger watercolours. For Sargent, however, the watercolours were not so much about swagger as about a new way of thinking. In watercolour as opposed to oils his vision became more personal and his works more interconnected. Presenting nearly 100 works of art, this book is the first major publication of Sargents watercolours in twenty years. Each chapter highlights a different subject or theme that attracted the artists attention during his travels through Europe and the Middle East: sunlight on stone, figures reclining on grass, patterns of light and shadow. Insightful essays by the worlds leading experts enhance this book and introduce readers to the full sweep of Sargents accomplishments in the medium, in works that delight the eye as well as challenge our understanding of this prodigiously gifted artist.

Book excerpt: "The Metropolitan Museum began acquiring American drawings and watercolors in 1880, just ten years after its founding. Since then it has amassed more than 1,500 works executed by American artists during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in watercolor, pastel, chalk, ink, graphite, gouache, and charcoal. This volume documents the draftsmanship of more than 150 known artists before 1835 and that of about 60 unidentified artists of the period. It includes drawings and watercolors by such American masters as John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull, John Vanderlyn, Thomas Cole, Asher Brown Durand, George Inness, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Because the 504 works illustrate such a wide range of media, techniques, and styles, this publication is a veritable history of American drawing from the eighteenth through most of the nineteenth century."--Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of a Group Exhibition of Water Color Paintings, Pastels, Drawings and Sculpture by American and European Artists: November 19-December 20, Inclusive, 1923 The Brooklyn Museum is especially interested in spreading the taste for water color painting. In the contemplation of the Museum, this is an art, not only replete with charm and with many practical features that should make for popularity, but it is worthy of the most serious study of discriminating art lovers. There is an impression that this branch of painting is without the dignity and importance of oils; that it is suitable only to the amateur with casual training, and that it involves no special difficulties for him. This is far from the truth. An art honored by the life long practice of Winslow Homer, not to cite many other distinguished painters, is not a minor art, nor inferior in its requirements to that of any other department of the fine arts; There are in fact many excellent painters in oil, but to be suc cessful in water color painting in its highest sense takes genius. It must be remembered that water color is a free flowing liquid and every stroke of the brush, accidental or intentional, remains on the drawing paper. The colors cannot be readily expunged or changed without injury to the picture. The artist must from the outset exercise the utmost vigilance. It is essentially the first stroke that counts. For this reason a true transparent watercolor painting is apt to convey in a singularly lucid manner the inspired impulse of the painter, and in consequence one feels closer to his thought than in the often labored and elaborated canvases of the painter m oils. Water color is especially adapted to the American artist. There is something in the joyous freedom of handling and brilliancy of effect possible in this medium that corresponds to the nature conditions by which the artist is typically surrounded, the sparkle of the somewhat thin atmosphere, the preponderance of sunlight, the vivid coloration and high visibility, and perhaps the absence of that vague atmospheric mystery found every. Where also, except in the tropics. The possibilities in the employment of these elements have been shown by what has already been achieved, and great things may be looked forward to in the future. For this reason the Brooklyn Museum has by its exhibitions laid stress on the importance of water color. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last years of his life Paul Cézanne produced a stunning series of watercolors, many of them sill lifes. Still Life with Blue Pot is one of these late masterpieces that is now in the collection of the Getty Museum. In Cézanne in the Study: Still Life in Watercolors, Carol Armstrong places this great painting within the context of Cezanne’s artistic and psychological development and of the history of the genre of still life in France. Still life—like the medium of watercolor—was traditionally considered to be “low” in the hierarchy of French academic paintings. Cézanne chose to ignore this hierarchy, creating monumental still-life watercolors that contained echoes of grand landscapes and even historical paintings in the manner of Poussin—the “highest” of classical art forms. In so doing he changed his still lifes with new meanings, both in terms of his own notoriously difficult personality and in the way he used the genre to explore the very process of looking at, and creating, art. Carol Armstrong’s study is a fascinating exploration of the brilliant watercolor paintings that brought Cézanne’s career to a complex, and triumphant, conclusion, The book includes new photographic studies of the Getty’s painting that allow the reader to encounter this great watercolor as never before, in all of its richness and detail.

Book excerpt: Water to Paper, Paint to Sky is the first comprehensive retrospective of America’s oldest living artist Tyrus Wong, whose groundbreaking work on Walt Disney’s classic animation film Bambi influenced a generation of leading animators, including John Lasseter, Pete Docter, and Don Hahn. Tyrus Wong’s ability to evoke powerful feeling in his art with simple gestural compositions continues to inspire each new generation of artists, and his influence can still be seen in movies today. “Tyrus Wong’s sophistication of expression was a gigantic leap forward for the medium. Where other films were literal…Bambi was expressive and emotional. Tyrus painted feelings, not objects.” — John Lasseter, Academy-Award winning director Born in 1910 in Canton, China, Tyrus Wong immigrated as a young boy to the United States, where he has enjoyed a long, distinguished, and diverse artistic career as a prolific painter, illustrator, calligrapher, lithographer, muralist, designer, Hollywood sketch artist, ceramicist, and kitemaker. Tyrus is legendary for his innovative work on Walt Disney Studio’s classic animation film Bambi, in which his singular vision and evocative, impressionistic concept art caught the eye of Walt Disney himself and influenced the movie’s overall visual style.
