Book excerpt: Previous studies of the scattering of elastic waves have been limited to spherical and cylindrical scatterers. The present study is an investigation of the scattering of a plane compressional wave incident from an arbitrary direction on an elliptical obstacle (either cavity or a rigid inclusion). By varying the ellipticity, shapes ranging from the finite-length slit to the cylinder may be considered. Analytical solutions are obtained for the scattered displacements in the form of product series expansions valid throughout the entire media. Due to the interaction of P-waves and S-waves at the boundary of the scatterer, the boundary conditions are not separable. As a consequence the coefficients of the series solution are determined from a coupled, infinite system of algebraic equations. The solutions are highly convergent, however, and the system can be truncated to a reasonable size for numerical computation. In addition, simplified asymptotic solutions are given for the far-field displacements. It is found that the scattered displacements attenuate like r to the minus one-half power, with the radial displacement associated with the dilatational potential and the tangential displacement associated with the shear potential. The asymptotic solutions are used to obtain the scattered radiation pattern in the far field. Finally, for the special case of a slit the radiation patterns for different directions of incident wave and different ratios of wave length to slit length are compared. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes one year of theoretical and applied research on propagation of seismic waves and techniques for analyzing data. The main objectives were to determine the frequency and energy of seismic signatures, and investigate attenuation, patterns of azimuthal radiation from source regions, and methods of determining the type of motion at the source. Natural and artificial sources were studied to develop diagnostic aids for distinguishing between earthquakes and underground nuclear detonations. Equipment for selection, reformatting, and digital-to-analog conversion for digitally recorded LASA data was constructed and is being checked out. Several approaches for using the parallel computational capabilities of optics for LASA data were developed. A study of background noise and reciprocity for teleseismic events as recorded on the bottom of a large fresh water lake has commenced with the emplacement of three-component seismometers in Lake Superior. Array data have been used for crustal studies on the Eastern United States. Digital mode filtering was investigated. A perturbation theory for seismic sources was developed. (Author).

Book excerpt: This paper studies the role of the cavity shape in determining the two-dimensional far-field radiation from a pressurized source. The radiation patterns are obtained for both the longitudinal and transverse waves radiating from an elliptical region that varies from a line source to a circular source. The results of several cases show that: (1) for all noncicular boundzries the shear wave exists and consistently shows a four-lobed pattern of alternate polarity. (2) the ratio of wavelength to cavity ecicumference and the cavity shape (ellipticity) have a strong influence on the radiation patter. (Author).

Book excerpt: Focusing on recent developments in the area of seismic wave propagation and scattering, this text combines information from numerous sources to present a coherent introduction to the theory of scattering in acoustic and elastic materials. With the emphasis firmly on the lithosphere, the book includes analyses of observations using the theoretical methods developed. Written for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduates of geophysics and planetary sciences, this is also of interest to civil engineers, seismologists, acoustical engineers, and others interested in wave propagation through inhomogeneous elastic media.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the mathematical potential and computational efficiency of the Boundary Element Method (BEM) for modeling seismic wave propagation in either continuous or discrete inhomogeneous elastic/viscoelastic, isotropic/anisotropic media containing multiple cavities, cracks, inclusions and surface topography. BEM models may take into account the entire seismic wave path from the seismic source through the geological deposits all the way up to the local site under consideration. The general presentation of the theoretical basis of elastodynamics for inhomogeneous and heterogeneous continua in the first part is followed by the analytical derivation of fundamental solutions and Green's functions for the governing field equations by the usage of Fourier and Radon transforms. The numerical implementation of the BEM is for antiplane in the second part as well as for plane strain boundary value problems in the third part. Verification studies and parametric analysis appear throughout the book, as do both recent references and seminal ones from the past. Since the background of the authors is in solid mechanics and mathematical physics, the presented BEM formulations are valid for many areas such as civil engineering, geophysics, material science and all others concerning elastic wave propagation through inhomogeneous and heterogeneous media. The material presented in this book is suitable for self-study. The book is written at a level suitable for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students in solid mechanics, computational mechanics and fracture mechanics.

Book excerpt: 3C seismic applications provide enhanced rock property characterization of the reservoir that can complement P-wave methods. Continued interest in converted P- to S-waves (PS-waves) and vertical seismic profiles (VSPs) has resulted in the steady development of advanced vector wavefield techniques. PS-wave images along with VSP data can be used to help P-wave interpretation of structure in gas obscured zones, of elastic and fluid properties for lithology discrimination from S-wave impedance and density inversion in unconventional reservoirs, and of fracture characterization and stress monitoring from S-wave birefringence (splitting) analysis. The book, which accompanies the 2016 SEG Distinguished Instructor Short Course, presents an overview of 3C seismic theory and practical application: from fundamentals of PS-waves and VSPs, through to acquisition and processing including interpretation techniques. The emphasis is on unique aspects of vector wavefields, anisotropy, and the important relationships that unify S-waves and P-waves. Various applications and case studies demonstrate image benefits from PS-waves, elastic properties and fluid discrimination from joint inversion of amplitude variations with offset/angle (AVO/A), and VSP methods for anisotropic velocity model building and improved reservoir imaging. The book will be of interest to geophysicists, geologists, and engineers, especially those involved with or considering the use of AVO/A inversion, fracture/stress characterization analyses, or interpretation in gas-obscured reservoirs.

Book excerpt: Seismic waves are one of the standard diagnostic tools used to determine the mechanical parameters (volume density of mass, compressibility, elastic stiffness) in the interior of the earth and the geometry of subsurface structures. There is increasing evidence that in the interpretation of seismic data - especially shear-wave data - the influence of anisotropy must be taken into account. This volume presents a method to compute the seismic waves that are generated by an impulsive source in a stratified anisotropic medium. Although written with the seismic applications in mind, the method that is developed is not limited to solid-earth geophysics. In fact, the methods discussed in this monograph are applicable wherever waves propagate in stratified, anisotropic media. The standard approach to this problem is to employ Fourier transformations with respect to time and with respect to the horizontal spatial coordinates. To obtain numerical results, the relevant inverse transformations then have to be evaluated numerically. In this monograph the problem is, in contrast to the standard approach, solved by applying the Cagniard-de Hoop method and by representing the wave field as a sum of generalized rays. With this method, the computational results can be obtained relatively easily with any degree of accuracy, and with considerably less computation time. For completeness, analysis of acoustic waves in stratified isotropic media is included. Furthermore, for large horizontal or vertical source-receiver separations very efficient approximations are derived. Several examples and applications are given.

It reviews the principal mathematical topics required for approaching wave propagation and scattering problems, and shows how to develop the required solutions. The emphasis is on concepts and results rather than on the fine detail of proof. Each chapter ends with a bibliography pointing to more detailed proofs.
