Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the collected works of the eminent chemist and physicist Lars Onsager, one of the most influential scientists of the 20th Century. The volume includes Onsager''s previously unpublished PhD thesis, a biography by H C Longuet-Higgins and M E Fisher, an autobiographical commentary, selected photographs, and a list of Onsager discussion remarks in print.Onsager''s scientific achievements were characterized by deep insights into the natural sciences. His two best-known accomplishments are his reciprocal relations for irreversible processes, for which he received the 1968 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and his explicit solution of the two-dimensional Ising model, a mathematical tour de force that created a sensation when it appeared. In addition, he made significant theoretical contributions to other fields, including electrolytes, colloids, superconductivity, turbulence, ice, electrons in metals, and dielectrics. In this volume, Onsager''s contributions are divided into the following fields: irreversible processes; the Ising model; electrolytes; colloids; helium II and vortex quantization; off-diagonal long-range order and flux quantization; electrons in metal; turbulence; ion recombination; fluctuation theory; dielectrics; ice and water; biology; Mathieu functions. The different fields are evaluated by leading experts. The commentators are P W Anderson, R Askey, A Chorin, C Domb, R J Donnelly, W Ebeling, J-C Justice, H N W Lekkerkerker, P Mazur, H P McKean, J F Nagle, T Odijk, A B Pippard, G Stell, G H Weiss, and C N Yang.

Tsien (also known as Dr. Qian Xuesen), is celebrated as the leader of the research that produced China's first ballistic missiles, its first satellite, and the Silkworm anti-ship missile. This volume collects the scientific works of Dr. H. S. Tsien (also known as Dr. Qian Xuesen) and his co-authors, which published between 1938—1956 when he was studying and working in the United States as a graduate student, scientist and professor, when aeronautic exploration stepped up from low speed to high speed regimes and astronautic technology entered its infant stage. The author is one of the most significant Chinese scientists in the past 70 years Focuses on a series of key problems in aerodynamics, stability of shells, rocket ballistics and engine analyses Collects Tsien's work as author and co-author from his time working in the US

Book excerpt: One of the greatest mathematicians in the world, Michael Atiyah has earned numerous honors, including a Fields Medal, the mathematical equivalent of the Nobel Prize. While the focus of his work has been in the areas of algebraic geometry and topology, he has also participated in research with theoretical physicists. For the first time, these volumes bring together Atiyah's collected papers--both monographs and collaborative works-- including those dealing with mathematical education and current topics of research such as K-theory and gauge theory. The volumes are organized thematically. They will be of great interest to research mathematicians, theoretical physicists, and graduate students in these areas.

Richard Biichi is well known for his work in mathematical logic and theoretical computer science. (He himself would have sharply objected to the qualifier "theoretical," because he more or less identified science and theory, using "theory" in a broader sense and "science" in a narrower sense than usual.) We are happy to present here this collection of his papers. I (DS)1 worked with Biichi for many years, on and off, ever since I did my Ph.D. thesis on his Sequential Calculus. His way was to travel locally, not globally: When we met we would try some specific problem, but rarely dis cussed research we had done or might do. After he died in April 1984 I sifted through the manuscripts and notes left behind and was dumbfounded to see what areas he had been in. Essentially I knew about his work in finite au tomata, monadic second-order theories, and computability. But here were at least four layers on his writing desk, and evidently he had been working on them all in parallel. I am sure that many people who knew Biichi would tell an analogous story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents all the published works -- spanning more than thirty years -- of Julia Bowman Robinson. These papers constitute important contributions to the theory of effectively calculable functions and to its applications. Outstanding among the latter are Robinson's proof of the effective unsolvability of the decision problem for the rational number field (and, consequently of that for the first-order theory of all fields), and her work that provided the central step toward the negative solution of Hilbert's Tenth Problem. These results provide upper bound for what one can hope to obtain in the way of positive solutions to the decision problem for special classes of fields and for special classes of diophantine equations, respectively. Besides thematic unity, Robinson's papers are distinguished by their clarity of purpose and accessibility to non-specialists as well as specialists. The volume also includes an extensive biographical memoir on the life and work of Robinson, who will be remembered not only for her distinctive and vital contributions, but also as the first woman to be elected to the mathematical section of the National Academy of Sciences and as the first woman to be President of the American Mathematical Society.
