Book excerpt: From the editor: By no means a complete collection, this small gathering of political documents of the Black Liberation Army can serve as an introduction to one of the most important revolutionary groups that operated in the liberation struggles of the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. The B.L.A. was a collection of various revolutionaries across the country fighting for the liberation of the Black [New Afrikan] nation inside the most murderous empire of modern day, Amerikkka. Through a revolutionary Black nationalist and Marxist framework, the B.L.A. advanced the struggle as an underground urban guerrilla formation that had sprung out of the Black Panther Party too achieve self-determination by any means necessary. So much can be said of their selfless sacrifices and courage that should inspire all real revolutionaries, but more information can be found through further investigation, including (but not limited to): Jalil Muntaqim's "On the Black Liberation Army" Assata Shakur's "Assata: An Autobiography" as well as marxists.org and the Freedom Archives. We also must, most importantly, focus on freeing all remaining BPP and B.L.A. political prisoners from the racist and fascist prison system! This collection includes: B.L.A. Political Dictionary Message to the Black Movement B.L.A. Communique 11/81 An Open Letter to the White Left in the U.S.

Book excerpt: "A collection of revolutionary literature penned by militants of the Black Liberation Army, an armed aspect of the Black revolutionary underground that debuted in 1970. As a deliberate consequence of the enemy state's political repression against the BLA, much literature and communications from this time have been lost. The Rookery Press has sought a number of these precious writings and reproduced them into this volume."--Page [4] of cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russell Maroon Shoatz is a political prisoner who has been held unjustly for over thirty years, including two decades in solitary confinement. He was active as a leader in the Black Liberation Movement in Philadelphia, both above and underground. His successful escapes from maximum-security prisons earned him the title “Maroon.” This is the first published collection of his accumulated written works, and also includes new essays written expressly for this volume. Despite the torture and deprivation that has been everyday life for Maroon over the last several decades, he has remained at the cutting edge of history through his writings. His work is innovative and revolutionary on multiple levels: • His self-critical and fresh retelling of the Black liberation struggle in the U.S. includes many practical and theoretical insights; • His analysis of the prison system, particularly in relation to capitalism, imperialism, and the drug war, takes us far beyond the recently-popular analysis of the Prison Industrial Complex, contained in books such as The New Jim Crow; • His historical research and writings on Maroon communities throughout the Americas, drawing many insights from these societies in the fields of political and military revolutionary strategy are unprecedented; and finally • His sharp and profound understanding of the current historical moment, with clear proposals for how to move forward embracing new political concepts and practices (including but not limited to eco-socialism, matriarchy and eco-feminism, food security, prefiguration and the Occupy Wall Street movement) provide cutting-edge challenges for today’s movements for social change.

This first published collection of his accumulated works showcases his sharp and profound understanding of the current historical moment, with clear proposals for how to move forward embracing new political concepts and practices. Informed by Shoatz's experience as a leader in the Black Liberation Movement in Philadelphia, the pieces in this book put forth his fresh and self-critical retelling of the black liberation struggle in the United States and provide cutting-edge analysis of the prison-industrial complex. Innovative and revolutionary on multiple levels, the essays also discuss such varied topics as eco-socialism, matriarchy and eco-feminism, food security, prefiguration and the Occupy Wall Street movement. Including new essays written expressly for this volume, Shoatz's unique perspective offers many practical and theoretical insights for today's movements for social change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is for the people who probably would not otherwise be exposed to the thoughts of these phenomenal Black rebels. Browsing through some of the already published Black quotation compilations I realized how significant and special the content of The Suppressed Rebellion is. Minus a few non-controversial quotes from Malcolm X and maybe Huey P. Newton, these other more mainstream compilations neglected to incorporate almost everyone I included in The Suppressed Rebellion. None of these books, and I won t bother to name them, had anything from Assata Shakur, Amilcar Cabral, John Henrik Clarke, Frances Cress Welsing, or most of the other people whose most profound thoughts are contained in this volume. I m proud that I ve given these very significant people their due, or at least exposed them to an audience maybe not familiar with their ideas. This book is not intended to substitute further research into the complete works of these rebels, but to familiarize more people with them so that further research is encouraged. Every thought included throughout this volume is as relevant today as it was when initially expressed. The struggle is not over. Just because a portion of Black people have been allowed to progress materially and individually through integration into White society doesn t mean the Black liberation struggle is over. If you think it is over, then you are probably one of the integrated, would like to be one of the integrated, or maybe just don t understand. Until Black people have complete control over every aspect of their existence then the struggle continues, period. The Suppressed Rebellion works toward supporting this very notion. If you just read and reflect on a few quotes every day, it will have a definite effect on how you perceive and participate in the liberation struggle of Black people globally. Even if you believe yourself to be among the more knowledgeable regarding the liberation struggle, I am highly confident that you will benefit tremendously from the comprehensive insight of this volume.

Book excerpt: Kuwasi Balagoon was a participant in the Black Liberation struggle from the 1960s until his death in prison in 1986. A member of the Black Panther Party and defendant in the infamous Panther 21 case, Balagoon went underground with the Black Liberation Army (BLA). Balagoon was unusual for his time in that he combined anarchism with Black nationalism, broke the rules of sexual and political conformity, took up arms against the white supremacist State--all the while never shying away from critiquing the movements's weaknesses. The first part of this book consists of contributions by those who knew or were touched by Balagoon; the second consists of court statements and essays by Balagoon himself, including several documents which have never been published before. The third section consists of excerpts from letters Balagoon wrote while in prison. A final section includes a historical essay by Akinyele Umoja and an extensive intergenerational roundtable discussion of the significance of Balagoon's life and thoughts today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the largest army in the world. China is predicted to be on the brink of overtaking the USA as the world's largest economy, and China's military capabilities and global ambitions are the single greatest long-term pre-occupation of Western governments. The PLA has progressed steadily – if slowly – since its creation in 1949, from a mass army of unsophisticated infantry limited to 'human wave' tactics into a highly sophisticated force with wide capabilities. The most recent reforms (1989 to the present day) have been made possible by massive economic liberalization, and have seen not only the modernization of all the armed forces but the beginnings of global outreach, even including Chinese participation in UN peace-keeping missions to Africa, the Middle East, and Haiti. Featuring rare photographs and specially commissioned color artwork, this study explores the developing structure, organization, equipment, appearance, and character of the Chinese People's Liberation Army from its creation until today.

Responding to what he saw as the unrealistic insurrectionism and isolation into which anarchism had fallen, Malatesta advocated “a long and patient work to prepare and organize the people,” through which anarchism would operate in broad daylight to entrench itself in the workers’ movement. Among the concerns Malatesta addresses in this volume are the assassinations of King Humbert of Italy and President McKinley in the US. The emerging radical labor movement that was taking off in England, France, and Spain at the time, and his own imprisonment in England.
