This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 911 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This antiquarian book contains Thomas Aquinas's "Catena Aurea". It is a comprehensive discussion and analysis of the four Gospels, by some of the greatest theologians to have ever graced the Catholic Church. Aquinas compiled this opus from sermons and commentaries on the Gospels written by the early Church Fathers. He arranged their thoughts in such a way that they form a continuous commentary on each Gospel, verse-by-verse. This book will prove invaluable for serious students of Catholicism, and is not to be missed by the discerning collector. Many vintage texts such as this - particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before - are increasingly hard to come by and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now, in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Book excerpt: This book puts before the reader a succinct and philosophically valid interpretation of St. Thomas Aquinas' arguments for the existence of God by a modern, historically grounded interpreter of his thought. Father Joseph Owens is well known for the exacting care with which he prepares his articles and the solid scholarly apparatus with which he supports them. His knowledge of Greek, Latin, Aristotelian, as well as the Thomistic corpus is profound, and he is conversant with the various interpretative traditions within Aristotelianism and Thomism in ancient, medieval, and modern times in their appropriate languages. This volume will challenge the reader, yet it includes everything to help comprehend the position of St. Thomas Aquinas on this central issue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers, and makes available in English, with new introductions, previously out of print or otherwise difficult to access articles by Fr Roberto Busa S.J. (1913 - 2011). Also included is a comprehensive bibliography of Busa, an oral history interview with Busa's translator, and a substantial new chapter that evaluates Busa's contributions and intellectual legacies. The result is a groundbreaking book that is of interest to digital humanists and computational linguists as well as historians of science, technology and the humanities. As the application of computing to cultural heritage becomes ever more ubiquitous, new possibilities for transmitting, shaping, understanding, questioning and even imagining the human record are opening up. Busa is considered by many to be among the pioneers in this field, and his research on projects like the Index Thomisticus is one of the earliest known examples of a humanities project that incorporated automation; it continues to be widely cited and used today. Busa published more than 350 academic articles and shorter pieces in numerous languages, but despite the unquestionable importance of his early work for understanding the history and development of fields like humanities computing and computational linguistics, a large part of his canon and thinking remained inaccessible or difficult to access until this book.

Book excerpt: In the Summa theologiae, Aquinas attempts to set forth the whole of Christian theology in summary form. It was written, he says, for "the instruction of beginners," but few Christians today have the time or inclination to reach for the five thick volumes that comprise the standard English-language edition. In Holy Teaching, Frederick Bauerschmidt presents some choice selections from the Summa theologiae, along with commentary that unpacks the selections and places them in context. Holy Teaching is an ideal introduction to the work of Aquinas that will give students, pastors, and interested laypeople a greater appreciation for our common Christian inheritance.

Book excerpt: SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS COLLECTION [22 BOOKS] — Quality Formatting and Value — Active Index, Multiple Table of Contents for all Books — Multiple Illustrations Thomas Aquinas, O.P., was an Italian Dominican friar, Catholic priest, and Doctor of the Church. He was an immensely influential philosopher, theologian, and jurist in the tradition of scholasticism, within which he is also known as the Doctor Angelicus and the Doctor Communis. The name Aquinas identifies his ancestral origins in the county of Aquino in present-day Lazio, where his family held land until 1137. He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology and the father of Thomism. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy developed or opposed his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics, and political theory. Unlike many currents in the Church of the time, Thomas embraced several ideas put forward by Aristotle—whom he called "the Philosopher"—and attempted to synthesize Aristotelian philosophy with the principles of Christianity. The works for which he is best known are the Summa Theologiae and the Summa contra Gentiles. His commentaries on Sacred Scripture and on Aristotle form an important part of his body of work. Furthermore, Thomas is distinguished for his eucharistic hymns, which form a part of the Church's liturgy. —BOOKS— AN APOLOGY FOR THE RELIGIOUS ORDERS ARISTOTLE ON INTERPRETATION CATENA AUREA: COMMENTARY ON THE FOUR GOSPELS COLLECTED OUT OF THE WORKS OF THE FATHERS: VOLUMES 1 TO 4 COMMENTARY ON ARISTOTLE’S DE ANIMA COMMENTARY ON ARISTOTLE'S PHYSICS COMMENTARY ON THE METAPHYSICS COMPENDIUM OF THEOLOGY DE MEMORIA ET REMINISCENTIA EXPLANATION OF THE LORD'S PRAYER EXPLANATION OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS NATURE AND GRACE: SELECTIONS FROM THE SUMMA THEOLOGICA OF THOMAS AQUINAS NINETY-NINE HOMILIES OF SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS: UPON THE EPISTLES AND GOSPELS FOR FORTY-NINE SUNDAYS OF THE CHRISTIAN YEAR OF GOD AND HIS CREATURES ON KINGSHIP: TO THE KING OF CYPRUS ON THE POWER OF GOD REFUTATION OF THE PERNICIOUS TEACHING OF THOSE WHO WOULD DETER MEN FROM ENTERING RELIGIOUS LIFE THE BREAD OF LIFE: OR SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS ON THE ADORABLE SACRAMENT OF THE ALTAR THE PERFECTION OF THE SPIRITUAL LIFE THE RELIGIOUS STATE: THE EPISCOPATE AND THE PRIESTLY OFFICE THE SOUL THE SUMMA CONTRA GENTILES THE SUMMA THEOLOGICA: COMPLETE EDITION PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace and Freedom represents Lonergan's entry into subject matter that would occupy him throughout his lifetime. At the same time it is a manifestation of the thinking that has made him one of the world's foremost Thomist scholars. The volume is in two parts. Part One is a new edition of "Grace and Freedom: Operative Grace in the Thought of St Thomas Aquinas", four articles written by Lonergan in 1941-42, first published in book form in 1971. This edition includes new notes and indices. Part Two is Lonergan's doctoral dissertation, "Gratia Operans", submitted to the Gregorian University, Rome, in 1940. Published here in full for the first time, the dissertation provides important context and background for the articles in the first part. Lonergan's thesis is that, from the sixteenth century onwards, commentators on Thomas Aquinas lacked historical consciousness, raised questions that Thomas had never considered, and obfuscated the issues. Lonergan's achievement consists in having retrieved the actual position of Thomas by adopting a historical approach that has reconstructed his intellectual development on grace. The majority of contemporary theologians now agree with the implementation of the historical method. What Lonergan also adds is a unique diagnosis of the mistakes made by the modern scholastic authors in their treatment of grace. Throughout this work, Lonergan discovers in Thomas a mind in constant development, displaying radical shifts on fundamental questions. Together the two parts not only reveal an essential step in Lonergan's own development, but also make an impressive contribution to Thomist studies.
