Book excerpt: Managing international development and aid programs often relies on trial and error and flexibility. Practitioners need a mix of management theory and field practice to prepare them for work in other countries—transitional, developing, wealthier, and poorer alike. Filling an important gap in the literature for graduate students and practitioners in the public sector, private firms, contractors, and nonprofit organizations that manage development assistance projects, this is a guide to dealing with core issues likely to be faced in doing field work. International Development Management for Public and Nonprofit Organizations offers an accessible primer on the basics of managing and motivating people, teams, and organizations. It focuses on challenges and opportunities to managing in difficult cultures and contexts, including hostile political regimes. The book takes a deeper look at management in four sectors: public finance, urban transport, K–12 education, and natural resources and the environment. Presented throughout the book are 28 cases, designed to stimulate critical discussions, as well as five technical exercises to allow integration of theory and practice. This textbook is supplemented by slides for teaching along with a sample syllabus. It is addressed to current and future international aid managers, including those enrolled in international management and international development courses at the university level. Professional development organizations, such as contractors, nonprofits, and donors, will also find the book a useful addition to their training materials.

"Great read rivals Cussler and Riely...Thank you." - reader comment left on author's site. Is there a clandestine world of tunnels and bases underground? Who is living in them? What do they want with humanity? Leon Verdat thought he knew all there was to know about building underground tunnels and structures. His civilian contracting business was doing very well and his family was thriving. Then, he got a visit from a mysterious Man in Black and all that changed. He was introduced to the world of black budgets and secret military underground bases; the work of the "shadow government" and the ultra-rich. Now, his life will never be the same again, if he survives... There are a lot more things than he bargained for deep underground, and some of them have been here for a very long time. A sci-fi thriller from David Sloma -Book 5: "Wormwood" is now available as an ebook and paperback -Book 6: "Destroyer" is now available as an ebook and paperback -Book 7 "Purifier" is now available as an ebook and paperback All books in the running series are published now. The series is complete. A prequel story is mostly written, so check back for that in spring/summer 2021. The inspiration behind this book series? Many late nights listening to Coast to Coast AM, since the early days of Art Bell, where he'd have many guests on that talked about aliens and underground secret bases (mostly in the southwest USA desert, like Area 51, but also bases all over the world), like Whitley Strieber, Richard Dolan, Roger Lear, Richard Sauder, and more. Guests spoke about real life bases and also told some fictional stories. Some spoke about both. These books take a sampling of the facts that have been made public about D.U.M.B.s and adds some imaginative speculation to create a brand new, wild fictional ride! Book Synopsis Metaphors of Confinement by : Monika Fludernik
Download or read book Metaphors of Confinement written by Monika Fludernik and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphors of Confinement: The Prison in Fact, Fiction, and Fantasy offers a historical survey of imaginings of the prison as expressed in carceral metaphors in a range of texts about imprisonment from Antiquity to the present as well as non-penal situations described as confining or restrictive. These imaginings coalesce into a 'carceral imaginary' that determines the way we think about prisons, just as social debates about punishment and criminals feed into the way carceral imaginary develops over time. Examining not only English-language prose fiction but also poetry and drama from the Middle Ages to postcolonial, particularly African, literature, the book juxtaposes literary and non-literary contexts and contrasts fictional and nonfictional representations of (im)prison(ment) and discussions about the prison as institution and experiential reality. It comments on present-day trends of punitivity and foregrounds the ethical dimensions of penal punishment. The main argument concerns the continuity of carceral metaphors through the centuries despite historical developments that included major shifts in policy (such as the invention of the penitentiary). The study looks at selected carceral metaphors, often from two complementary perspectives, such as the home as prison or the prison as home, or the factory as prison and the prison as factory. The case studies present particularly relevant genres and texts that employ these metaphors, often from a historical perspective that analyses development through different periods.
