Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gathering the work of a lifetime, spanning four books of poetry, and including thirty-four new poems, Collected Poems is the first comprehensive collection of the work of one of India’s most influential English language poets. Arvind Krishna Mehrotra’s poetry has long been known for its mixing of the commonplace and the strange, the autobiographical and the fabulous, in which the insignificant details of everyday life-whether contemporary or historical-bring larger patterns into focus. Mehrotra’s celebrated translations from Indian languages (Prakrit, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali) take up a third of Collected Poems. Selections from The Absent Traveller and Songs of Kabir are followed by those of Nirala, Vinod Kumar Shukla, Mangalesh Dabral, Pavankumar Jain and Shakti Chattopadhyay. Together they tell the story of Indian poetry over two millennia.

Book excerpt: The Gathasaptasati is perhaps the oldest extant anthology of poetry from South Asia, containing our very earliest examples of secular verse. Reputed to have been compiled by the Satavahana king Hala in the second century CE, it is a celebrated collection of 700 verses in Maharashtri Prakrit, composed in the compact, distilled gatha form. The anthology has attracted several learned commentaries and now, through Arvind Krishna Mehrotra’s acclaimed translation of 207 verses from the anthology, readers of English at last have access to its poems. The speakers are mostly women and, whether young or old, married or single, they touch on the subject of sexuality with frankness, sensitivity and, every once in a while, humour, which never ceases to surprise. The Absent Traveler includes an elegant and stimulating translator’s note and an afterword by Martha Ann Selby that provides an admirable introduction to Prakrit literature in general and the Gathasaptasati in particular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of my poetry started out written by pen or pencil on whatever paper was available at the time; such as paper napkins (accompanying a coffee and the compulsory cookie or cake), or the inside of a emptied breakfast cereal box. The poems were collected in a scrapbook, currently residing in the bottom drawer of my filing cabinet. Many were then typed on a small portable typewriter in its tan coloured case. The scrapbook and typewriter accompanied me by car out of British Columbia, the furthest west province of Canada; down the western coast of the United States through Washington, Oregon and California. This treasured pair then accompanied me as hand luggage across the Pacific Ocean as I migrated to New Zealand and then Australia. The typewriter was eventually sold at a garage sale leading up to our most recent move in 2002. At some point my much travelled friend was replaced by a computer (Commodore 64, I believe). After many computer upgrades, I now have all my prose poetry collection saved on my desktop and backed up on a USB stick. As I have exposed my emotions and interests to you in this collection of poetry, I trust you have been touched by at least one of them.

Book excerpt: A collection of writers, poets, artists, social entrepreneurs and political activists in the Global International African Arts Movement speak about their work in the context of Trump, giving a voice to the voiceless and about the 5th estate of power in this timely and important book. Scheduled for release at the top of the 2020 US Presidential election, Dispatches from the Vanguard channels the global soul’s hunger for freedom from authoritarian control. Partnering with dozens of Pulitzer Prize Winners, New York Times Best Sellers, poet laureates, TED speakers, and influencers within the Global International African Arts Movement, including Ishmael Reed, Tyehimba Jess, Rich Fresh, Nikki Giovanni, Nnedi Okorafor, Chester Higgins, Tori Reid and Jaki Shelton Green, Dispatches offers a poignant, high-frequency rebuke of Donald J. Trump (actual man, strawman and metaphor for white privilege and capitalist despotism) and his ruthless amoral presidency. As we approach a key moment in the recent history of American politics, Dispatches from the Vanguard is a timely intervention, showing us how we can challenge the impact and influence of politics when it is solely a means of authoritarian control.

This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Companion to Postcolonial Poetry is the first collection of essays to explore postcolonial poetry through regional, historical, political, formal, textual, gender, and comparative approaches. The essays encompass a broad range of English-speakers from the Caribbean, Africa, South Asia, and the Pacific Islands; the former settler colonies, such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, especially non-Europeans; Ireland, Britain's oldest colony; and postcolonial Britain itself, particularly black and Asian immigrants and their descendants. The comparative essays analyze poetry from across the postcolonial anglophone world in relation to postcolonialism and modernism, fixed and free forms, experimentation, oral performance and creole languages, protest poetry, the poetic mapping of urban and rural spaces, poetic embodiments of sexuality and gender, poetry and publishing history, and poetry's response to, and reimagining of, globalization. Strengthening the place of poetry in postcolonial studies, this Companion also contributes to the globalization of poetry studies.
