Book excerpt: From penniless beginnings as an engineering student in North London, Colin Chapman went on to build the world-famous Lotus car company and establish himself, in Jackie Stewart's words, as the "most creative designer of racing cars in the history of motor racing." Written with the full cooperation of Chapman's widow and Lotus Company, and reissued to meet continuing public interest, this is the definitive biography of the brilliant engineer. All of Chapman's creations are examined, including the original Lotus Elites, Elans and Europas of the early 1960s; the Eclat and the mid-engine Esprit; and the Lotus Grand Prix cars that became world-famous, winning seven constructors' and six drivers' World Championships.

Book excerpt: The Lotus Elite was a turning point for Lotus. First produced at the end of the 1950s, it marked Lotus' transition from a maker of small racing cars, which had limited utility on the road, to the producer of a highly sophisticated road and race car. In the Elite, Lotus exploited its knowledge of new technology and racing pedigree to produce a car which, with its glass fibre monocoque and Coventry Climax engine, had the potential to be a world beater. This book gives an insight into the reasons the car was produced and its importance in Lotus' history, especially in the production of lightweight innovative cars. Through interviews with Elite owners, first hand accounts provide a good overview of owning one of these iconic cars, covering its foibles and quirks as well as its exemplary roadholding, handling and performance. Illustrated with many colour photographs, along with period advertising material, the book provides a valuable insight into owning, running and racing these iconic cars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This latest stunning book from award winning publisher Coterie Press, Ian Walker Racing, The Man and His Cars, explores the life and times of Ian Walker. “Walker The Talker” as he was frequently referred to, was an astute businessman whose life offered many challenges. Ian Walker and Ian Walker Racing were prominent names in motor racing in the 1960’s alongside that of Colin Chapman and Lotus, with whom he enjoyed a great friendship. Ian Walker embraced almost all forms of post-war motorsport, from rallying to racing, from driver to team manager, from car manufacturer to car dealer, all achieved in just ten years. As a racing driver he was part of a unique band of North Londoners who would etch their names into the history of motor racing in the late fifties and early sixties. Behind the wheel of a Lotus Eleven he won the 1957 Autosport production sports car championship, almost repeating the feat the following year with one of the first Lotus Elites. Apart from a very successful year racing a Sprinzel Sebring Sprite, Ian Walker was almost always associated with Lotus, both as a driver and team owner. In this latter capacity he ran numerous examples of the marque and even developed his own fastback racing version of the Elan. His exceptionally high standards of preparation and presentation saw Ian Walker Racing universally recognised as the Lotus ‘B team’. Consequently he would provide drives for three future world champions, Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Sir Jackie Stewart, along with a host of other talented drivers including Mike Spence and Paul Hawkins. This exhaustive book looks chronologically at Ian Walkers life, the cars he built and raced, and the people that were part of his great adventure during the heady period of the 60’s, a time that began the transformation of motor racing into the business it has since become.

Book excerpt: The Lotus Europa was Colin Chapman and Lotus’s first mid-engined road car, and was produced from 1966 through to 1975. Originally designed to slot into the Lotus range below the Elan as a low cost replacement for the Lotus 7, the Europa eventually sat alongside the Elan and Plus 2 as a comparable sports car in its own right. Starting with the design philosophy behind the development of the Europa, this book provides detailed technical descriptions of all the major versions of the model, starting with the Renault-powered Series 1 through to the Lotus Twin Cam powered Special. It looks at the cars on the road, and the racing Type 47 derived from the road cars which competed in the small capacity Group 6 class, as well as featuring in historic racing today. With owners’ impressions and interviews with ex-Lotus employees, the book provides a valuable insight into owning, running, and racing these iconic cars.

Book excerpt: The bigger they are, the harder they fall" is how the old saying goes and while most of the time that is true the once-mighty Team Lotus was the exception. Because Lotus' decline was unusual: it was not a spectacular, swift or a sudden affair. Instead, it was a death by a 1000 cuts spanning years if not decades. During which time drivers were calling the shots, resources not allocated efficiently, race-winning technologies squandered, and questionable investments made. But could all this have been avoided and if so who or what should take the blame? A new book explores...Team Lotus: Beyond the Colin Chapman Era tells a tale that has been criminally under-reported. Lotus' decline, and its death by 1,000 cuts. It contains approx. 500 pages (kindle size) with over 150 rare photos. In short it will be comparable to my last book, 1994 - The Untold Story. Given all the positive reviews of that, you can expect this new book to be a great read, please look out for any reviews if you don't believe me. Contributors towards it include: Frank Dernie - Lotus' Technical Director Between 1989/90.Peter Wright - The man behind Lotus' active suspension during the 1980s.Antony Hayes - Historian for Team Lotus, and someone who worked there during the 1980s & 1990s.Willem Toet - Designer of championship-winning Benetton's and Ferrari F1 cars & F1 aerodynamics/wind tunnel expert.Nigel Beresford - Tyrrell's Race Engineer to Palmer, Alesi and Modena between 1989-1991 I'll add any reviews of this E-book here in due course so readers can make an informed decision. Peter Wright has read some of the draft and calls it an "interesting read." So what will be contained in this book? It focuses on the years from 1983 to the end of 1989 because we may produce a follow up book investigating Lotus' final years of 1990 - 1995. The reason they aren't in a single book is simple; this decline story is one that needs to be covered in detail. Remember there are 1000 cuts to cover. The book guides readers through all of Team Lotus' races between 1983 to the end of the 1989 F1 Season. This is to identify how the team bounced back after the death of their founder and inspiration, Colin Chapman, and to work out where their decline began. But it's also just an excuse to relive what was a great period of F1, the original turbo era. The book itself is full of detail, insights and written by someone passionate about this subject matter. An essential ingredient for a good book. This book is not shy in telling readers how things might have been done differently. It has many exclusives and is controversial in its findings. There are important lessons to be learned from a team's downfall, and that was certainly the case with Lotus as readers will come to learn. l've worked hard since the abridged version of this book (released in January 2020) to ensure any feedback from that has been implemented into this updated version. As a result this book is twice as long & detailed as that abridged version. I believe this book provides outstanding value for money for the content you are getting.

Book excerpt: This book, the first in Evro’s new Formula 1 Greats series, covers one of the most revered Formula 1 cars ever made. Introduced in 1970, the wedge-shaped Lotus 72 competed for six seasons, winning 20 World Championship Grands Prix, two Drivers’ titles (for Jochen Rindt in 1970 and Emerson Fittipaldi in 1972) and three Constructors’ titles (in 1970, 1972 and 1973), racing first in Lotus’s evocative red, white and gold livery, then the equally eye-catching black and gold of the John Player Special period. Pete Lyons, Autosport’s renowned Formula 1 reporter for part of the Lotus 72 era, explores the car’s entire race-by-race career in his insightful commentary accompanying a magnificent array of more than 300 photos. The 1970 season: after troubled early development, the 72 finally took over from the long-serving 49, its four consecutive race wins enough to secure the World Championship for Jochen Rindt, posthumously after his death during practice for the Italian Grand Prix. The 1971 season: with promising youngster Emerson Fittipaldi elevated to team leader after Rindt’s death, great things were expected of the 72’s second season but it proved to be winless. The 1972 season: now in black and gold John Player livery, the 72 became far more competitive and Fittipaldi’s four Grand Prix victories made him World Champion. The 1973 season: Ronnie ‘SuperSwede’ Peterson joined Fittipaldi to form a dream team and together they won seven races, but because Lotus’s spoils were divided between the two drivers Jackie Stewart was able to come through to become World Champion. The 1974 season: still the 72 soldiered on, now as the fall-back car after its successor, the 76, failed to deliver; partnered by Jacky Ickx, Peterson won three Grands Prix. The 1975 season: well beyond its sell-by date, the 72 did a final season but by now it was far from effective, with Ickx’s second place in the tragic Spanish Grand Prix its best result.
