Book Synopsis The Invention of the Colonial Americas by : Byron Ellsworth Hamann
Download or read book The Invention of the Colonial Americas written by Byron Ellsworth Hamann and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Seville’s Archive of the Indies reveals how current views of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are based on radical historical revisionism in Spain in the late 1700s. The Invention of the Colonial Americas is an architectural history and mediaarchaeological study of changing theories and practices of government archives in Enlightenment Spain. It centers on an archive created in Seville for storing Spain’s pre-1760 documents about the New World. To fill this new archive, older archives elsewhere in Spain—spaces in which records about American history were stored together with records about European history—were dismembered. The Archive of the Indies thus constructed a scholarly apparatus that made it easier to imagine the history of the Americas as independent from the history of Europe, and vice versa. In this meticulously researched book, Byron Ellsworth Hamann explores how building layouts, systems of storage, and the arrangement of documents were designed to foster the creation of new knowledge. He draws on a rich collection of eighteenth-century architectural plans, descriptions, models, document catalogs, and surviving buildings to present a literal, materially precise account of archives as assemblages of spaces, humans, and data—assemblages that were understood circa 1800 as capable of actively generating scholarly innovation.

Book Synopsis Explorations in History and Globalization by : Cátia Antunes
Download or read book Explorations in History and Globalization written by Cátia Antunes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering the ways in which the ‘global turn’ is changing the theory and practice of historical disciplines, Explorations in History and Globalization engages with the concept and methodology of globalization, challenging traditional divisions of space and time to offer a range of perspectives on how globalization has affected social, economic, political and cultural history. Each chapter covers a specific theme, discussing how globalization has shaped these themes and how they have contributed to globalization throughout history. Including topics such as ecological exchanges, trade, exchanges of knowledge, migration, empire and urbanization, this volume both explains historical trajectories through a global analytical framework and provides tools that students can employ when posing their own research questions about historical globalization. Containing suggestions for further reading and guidance on the ways in which primary source material can be used as a basis for global historical studies, this is the ideal volume for all students interested in the global exchanges between people throughout history.

Book Synopsis Cosmographers and Pilots of the Spanish Maritime Empire by : Ursula Lamb
Download or read book Cosmographers and Pilots of the Spanish Maritime Empire written by Ursula Lamb and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays deal with questions of navigation and, more broadly, the intellectual challenges posed by Spain’s acquisition of an empire across the Atlantic. Crudely, they had to find out what was where and how to get there. The first section of the volume looks at the 16th-century Sevillan cosmographers and pilots charged with this task: their achievements, the social and political context in which they worked, and the methods used to establish scientific truths - including the resort to litigation. Ursula Lamb then turns to examine specific problems, from the routing of transatlantic shipping to the application of cartographic coordinates to allocate unexplored territories. The final articles move forward to the time when, after a lapse of two centuries, Spanish nautical science became revitalised, and the Spanish Hydrographic Office was established.

This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the annotated translation of an account of Spain’s Armada of the Strait, which traveled to Brazil and the Strait of Magellan under Don Diego Flores de Valdés in 1581–84. Pedro de Rada, the official scribe of the armada, kept a detailed, neutral chronicle of the venture which remained in private hands until 1999 but is now held in the Henry E. Huntington Library in San Marino, California. It is published here for the first time. The voyage came at a crucial juncture in global politics, when Philip II of Spain had claimed the throne of Portugal and its empire, and Francis Drake’s daring peacetime raids had challenged the dominance of Spain and Portugal in the Americas.
